I have ordered the same power myself (In Norway, I get it from
www.kompoteket.no as RS components only sell to comapnies!).

What is the verdict on sound improvements?

Why don't you set it to 5VDC?

The currency converter I found on-line say that $1500HK = $193.32US.

You can usually tell by the weight. If it weighs about 1 lb, then it is
most likely linear.

I bring it up because I see some similarities between the 2 devices. I
agree thay are not the same type but both are digital in nature. I
agree mostly that modelling cannot totally represent reality. I have
not a/b the ps so I cannot talk with authority, but I suspect a well
designed smps will work as well as a linear one. Comparing the
wallwart to almost anything will result in improvment IMO. Bottom line
is the enjoyment from modding and listening is what is fun to me.

Good to hear you have found a plug 'n play linear PSU that delivers the
desired results. I wholeheartedly echo your comments regarding the
change in sound for the better a linear supply makes. I even found it
improved further as the first week's use went on.

Would this be an appropriate power supply when upgrading an SB3?

www.acopian.com/single-l-pcb-m.html model 5E150 in the 1 to 9v

There's also this one:

However, they're quite expensive. Any comments would be appreciated.

Thanks for the offer but, as has already been mentioned, the cost of a
custom made unit would be a bit prohibitive given that it's not
conclusive that the power supply makes a difference to the sound. I'd
hate to spend a lot of money to find it made no difference to my ears!
I was hoping to get a cheapish plug and play model and will buy the CPC

If I notice a big difference with this cheap psu, you never know, I may
take you up on the offer of a high quality psu!

You migt check out this thread
(http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=19452&page=4) which has
some more details regarding the CPC/Farnell unit.
I think somewhere in this thread there is also a description of how a
linear PSU would look like so you can recognize one even if it does not
say so on the box. The unit in question does match this description
(size, weight, heat).

I'm not yet sure about the sound improvements - still need to do some
serious listening and comparing...

Ok, well to be honest I don't really know much about this so I will
assume that "reasonable" is say a price based on the cost of a plug and
play linear psu model Elpac WM075-1950-760 Allied US version which is
priced at $38.950 plus shipping.
I understand that this may be too cheap for custom make. But I really
don't know. Give me some quotes, say like your cheapest with warranty,
and then maybe quote a slightly better make with warranty. Obviously
your expertise and recommendation is valued.

By the way are you US based?

How much would folk be prepared to pay for a plug and play linear supply?

What sort of box would you like (will affect the cost) ?

I'm also in the UK and trying find a "plug and play" linear PSU as I
don't even own a soldering iron!

I've searched through all of the threads here but can only find
references to diy PSUs.

Any suggestions anyone?

(in the various threads people have posted links for obtaining
out-of-the-box linear PSs for both the UK and US; read through all the
posts and you'll find 'em. the US one is allied electronics but I
don't recall the UK one off-hand)

Oh come on guys!, I just want something I can buy and take out from the
box and plug in. I don't know how to do all that electronic stuff, and
I'll probably make a right pigs ear of it. Can't someone make one for
my SB3 and I'll pay them?

RS Components sell the Lambda PSU. RS stock number: 173-1604. This is
the one I used. If nothing else you can download the full PSU spec from
the RS site as a pdf.

Ok so it has been established that the specification should be to:
5V DC, 1.2A+, linear PS.
But, can anyone direct me as to where or whom I should specify this to.
I take it that Maplins is out of the question?

2006-02-07 Thread Mark Lanctot

Keep in mind the "magic" PS is supposedly a *LINEAR* PS.

I personally don't believe any of it, but that's the one everyone is
quoting.

A linear PS will be much larger than a switching PS.

So specify a 5V DC, 1.2A+, linear PS.

Sorry, I stand corrected.

Everyone needs to stop quoting this as a matter of -fact.- It really
only needs 5V and a maximum of a very little over 1A. A 1.5A PS will
give you some breathing room, but a properly working SB will not draw
more than 1A. I use a 1.2A supply with an SB3, and it works just fine.
All the specs on this web site says 1A, and other third parties have
measured no more than 1030mA draw.

I'm sorry but I'm afraid I have no idea. I suspect not though. You may
be better off with a UK supplier.

I'm in New Zealand and cost of shipping one from US is prohibitive.
What technical details do I need to provide the electronics guys over
here to get a good quality power supply that delivers 5v and will not
damage the SB3?

Thanks in advance,
Mike

plug from this place?.
I'm currently searching for a UK supplier, which would have the correct

You can get one 'here' (http://tinyurl.com/djtbv) for $38.95 plus
shipping.

Otherwise you can look on eBay, you may get lucky.
