One other minor issue is that power-on button on the power amp may not
be present...

And the files you're streaming. You are much more likely to get drop
outs with higher bandwidth lossless formats like Flac than with highly
compressed lower bandwidth formats like mp3.
For reliability an all wired setup is definitely best, two wireless
hops is the worst. Most people use one wireless hop (to Squeezebox)
only.
With 128k mp3s you are quite likely to get perfect streaming across two
wireless hops as long as you have good signal strength. With any
lossless files the result is uncertain (although as Flac is decoded on
the Squeezebox itself it should perform best of all the lossless
formats as it will require a little less than half of the bandwidth of
other lossless formats which are decoded on the computer and streamed
to the Squeezebox as PCM)

Caveat: I may be wrong and often am.

No problem. Have you tried the analog outputs or ripping anything to
FLAC? Like I said, the only way to decide is listening for yourself.
Don't be too quick to take the advice of others!

Yeah, searching is always a good idea. There are probably lots of
threads about this in general discussion. Every question you can
imagine has probably been asked :-)

Avoiding a wireless hop to the server is obviously better in your
situation, but others get away with it. I guess it depends on your
walls.

2006-12-29 Thread Recoveryone

thanks for the info, and will go with the digital out.

I was reading some of the other post about which computer setup (power)
is best as a server.

Upstairs: I have a P4 2.8 gighz with 2gig of ram and 2 80gigHD
connected to my network via wireless card

Downstairs: P3 800mhz with 1gig of ram 2 20gigHD hardwire to the
router

The P3 system runs the Slim server flawlessly adding music and
navagation vis softsqueeze.

The P4 system has never fully ran the server (adding songs) or even
work to playback music via softsqueeze. I've reinstall the server 4-5
time with the same or worst results. I keep all of my music on the P4
system on the 2nd drive, and the way things are going I may need to
move all of my file over to the slower system. I guess my question is
it better to have your server hardwire and send out the signal wireless
to the SB3.

You made the mistake of saying you want the best sound possible, so
I'm afraid you'll have to re rip as much of the music to FLAC as you
care to listen to under this caveat.

Then you'll have to decide if you like the digital or analog out. Plug
the Sb3 analog outs to one input and if possible set the receiver to
'bypass mode' or 'analog direct' for that input (to avoid analog to
digital conversion). Hopefully this will allow you to listen to the
sound of the DAC inside the Sb3, which is the only way to decide if the
analog or digital out is better.

The advantage of the digital out (which can be hooked up
simultaneously) is that the signal will remain pure, and the receiver
will be able to do the signal processing you paid for before the
information is converted to analog.

That's not quite correct, unless you plan to modify the gain of the
t-amp internally you'll need the analog attenuation.

Use a higher quality pot if you're re-boxing, and adjust it so that the
Sb3 can be at max volume for critical listening.

I have a simuliar question, I have ordered the SB3 and I am interest in
the difference in the analog outputs vs the optical one. I have a
Pioneer elite VSX-81TX that has the ability to re-assemble WMA9 coded
music, but it needs to be optically connect. Not all of my music is in
this format (mainly Mp3) but I want to get the best sound using my
system.

SB3 + amp + speakers is about as simple as you can get, other than using
powered speakers. It should be fine, as long as the t-amp mates well
with your speakers. No preamp needed, though you might want some way
to limit the maximum volume. There is a software preamp level in the
server settings.
