yes, but somebody who is into Transporter shall buy it due to its DAC

Although Transporter still has some advantages (AES/EBU, BNC, much

Re: [SlimDevices: Audiophiles] Transporter: No more bug fixes in firmware

2010-05-15 Thread NewBuyer

For the casual visitor to this thread, here is the relevant quote from
Sean Adams from the bug-vote link above:

Sean Adams Wrote:
People are still seeing those spurious overvoltage errors on
 transporter. It is
understandably very disconcerting to them and they will think there
 must be
something wrong either with their AC or with the TP hardware.

The error is caused by spurious readings from an internal ADC which
 measures
one of the internal DC power rails. I was never able to figure out
 exactly why
it gets these spurious readings but I think it has something to do with
 how the
ADC's control pins are multiplexed (shared) with some other on-board
 peripheral.

I would suggest removing this failsafe feature entirely. I originally
 put it in
there as a debugging feature, like an assert()... not because I thought
 that
sustained overvoltages would actually be present on people's power
 supplies. In
reality the feature does not provide any protection from common power
 surges.

Yes the wireless is a seperate chip, but the firmware is monolithic,
meaning it isn't modular so they can't just drop the wireless drivers
from the source and release that. There may be other pieces that cannot
be released as source too. In face, you have all the WMA code in there
that they couldn't open source, plus any handling of subscription radio
services as well.

Not just the Xilinx, but the whole IP3K development platform needs to
be bought, if it's not $10K, it's probably more.

I agree totally. I planned to buy a Touch as secondary system, but I'm
not sure anymore. When I bought my transporter (2008), support was very
good and we saw frequent firmware updates. Now slimdevices (or whatever
it is called now) seems to have been brought down to so little people,
it isn't capable to support quite recent hardware anymore.

The transporter was 2000 euro two years ago; it's very disappointing
that for such an expensive piece of hardware support is just stopped.
(BTW, the transporter remains a fantastic player.)

Re: [SlimDevices: Audiophiles] Transporter: No more bug fixes in firmware

Having spent the $$ on a Transporter and enjoying it almost every day I
am likewise disappointed. However, I had already quit buying SB's
because I also really enjoy using my SBC's as players (with 7.3) and
since Logitech has no intention of making them work with later
iterations of their software, I am staying put. I would love to try
the Touch, but not enough to set up a second server to use it. I'm
happy with my boxes right where I am and if I don't buy another it
certainly doesn't cause me any pain. From the beginning the whole SD
thing has seemed haphazard to me. A fun run while it lasts I guess.

Boom and Transporter are the two units I use most. Have some
renovations commencing tomorrow following which I will install two SB3s
outdoors, a third is with my folks and I guess the fourth is a spare.
I'll use them till they're dead or made obsolete by something better
with features that are important to me. I will, however, definitely
not be springing for a Touch or any further SBanything's.

Ultimately I guess I take some comfort knowing that NMP is now on the
map and regardless of whether or not Squeezebox disappears there'll be
alternatives and in time they'll be better than Logitech's current
offerings.

They should put firmware in the public domain for the old platform if
they are not going to maintain it and more.

Is there a bug filed for that issue?

Re: [SlimDevices: Audiophiles] Transporter: No more bug fixes in firmware

2010-05-12 Thread Andy8421

It has been posted elsewhere that the transporter is coming to the end
of its life. It does however seem to be a bit rich not to continue to
support a product that is still part of the current product line-up
(and still advertised on the Logitech site).

While it is not directly comparable, I have some old Naim Nait
amplifiers that are over 25 years old that Naim are happy to service
and repair. I guess this is one of the reasons that the old specialist
HiFi manufacturers have such a following. It will be interesting to
see if the likes of Naim and Linn are still able to continue to support
the firmware (as opposed to the hardware) of their current generation of
software intensive products in 25 years time. Probably not.

+1. The corporate bean-counters now use Excel to run whatever is left

Disappointing, but not unexpected when the corporate suits chase the
 market down to 'Best Buy'

This sucks indeed. I really hoped that some annoying bugs will be
fixed.

Regarding 'selling' - maybe the smarter move is to buy the Transporter
for 200$? In the end this device gives you the quality not to be seen
yet from Linn or Naim.. Well, maybe Klimax DS, but you aren't going to
spend 20K$, right?

I agree totally. I planned to buy a Touch as secondary system, but I'm
not sure anymore. When I bought my transporter (2008), support was very
good and we saw frequent firmware updates. Now slimdevices (or whatever
it is called now) seems to have been brought down to so little people,
it isn't capable to support quite recent hardware anymore.

The transporter was 2000 euro two years ago; it's very disappointing
that for such an expensive piece of hardware support is just stopped.
(BTW, the transporter remains a fantastic player.)

 Teus

Agreed. One wonders why Logitech bothered to issue a survey re the
Transporter a week or so back if they've no intention of supporting it.
Least they could do is fix the bloody over voltage shit that happens
when playing and switching between 24/96 tracks.

Sean no longer works for Logitech, but let's face it: he probably knows
his way around the Transporter firmware better than anyone else. I also
get the impression that he's an honourable guy who would like to see
this irritating bug fixed.

It must be worth while Logitech paying Sean for a couple of days
consultancy to sort out this particular issue. The goodwill it will
generate would more than recoup the cost.

(I say all this as a Transporter owner who has never actually
experienced this problem, but I can understand how incredibly annoying
it must be for those who do).

http://bugs.slimdevices.com/show_bug.cgi?id=1976

http://bugs.slimdevices.com/show_bug.cgi?id=7217

All of them have the comment:

All new Squeezebox products are likely to be based on the SqueezePlay
platform. We do not plan to implement any further enhancements to the
ip3k firmware or which are targeted specifically at ip3k-based products.

Personally, I think this sucks, and would never have happened (so soon)
if Sean Dean were still in charge.
