Re: [SlimDevices: Audiophiles] Tube amplifier
The Q303 sound is very similar to the QII amps, but with more firm bass oompf. I would recommend it if you want a "tube" sound. They are a bit old now so a refurb is necessary. There are different options here. I have an original 303 serving as a paperweight. On topic: A vintage Luxman LV105 can be found for around $500. If you want more valves/tubes you can find a Luxman A3500 for twice that amount. Advantage of these amps is that the tubes are encased, but still visible, so they are more kid- and pet friendly. gordonb3's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=71050 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=114820 ___ audiophiles mailing list audiophiles@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/audiophiles

Re: [SlimDevices: Audiophiles] Tube amplifier
Why would you want a tube (valve) amplifier except for nostalgia? They add harmonic distortion - maybe of the sort we like. They cost a lot more. They may need more maintenance. Is that Audioheaven box a hybrid with the work done by solid state components and a valve thrown into the signal path to introduce that valve "warmth" (harmonic distortion). If you want a retro- system look at Quad Valve Amps https://www.quad-hifi.co.uk/valve-products/ Nicely made and probably a joy to own, but a good modern solid state design. will serve better. Then this might be interesting: https://www.lowbeats.de/test-cayin-cs-55a-prachtvoller-roehren-amp-mit-2-x-40-watt/ Cayin IMHO is very interesting for tube amp newbies and if the price matters. Also the tested model has a DAC included which means you can connect every squeezebox you like. And last but not least the CS 55a can be used if different types of tubes and is easy to handle regarding the used tubes (BIAS). I am sure you can get one to test at home for some days if you ask the dealer: https://cayin.com/online-kaufen/ Just give them a call... I don't have anything to say about tube amps, but I will just point out that all Squeezeboxes (including the Classic) do have DACs and analogue outputs, so schoeppi's advice about needing a DAC is not actually correct. But we all do not know what sounds good to you and therefore the best would be if you go to one or more dealer and listen to different tube amps. Or even better, ask your dealers to get different tube amp models for some days and test them at home in your known listening environment and oyur speakers and without stress. > I would like to connect a Squeezebox to it, maybe a turn table, too. I > do not want to spend more than 2000 euros/dollars and it should be a > single device (not a pre-amp/amp combination). My speakers are a pair of > Tannoy D100. I’ve looked around the net and for your speakers a amp wit at least 30W is recommended. Many tube amps to not have that much power ;-). So take care that the amp has enough power but its not said that you need it. I depends how loud you want to listen and how it sounds. Also this has to be tested at home with your speakers and it is very likely that also amps with less then 30W output will work with your speakers. What kind of squeezebox do you like to connect? If you have a touch or a Transporter no DAC is needed, a Classic does not have a DAC included so either also a external DAC is needed or the amp has to be able to do digital to analog conversion. > Is that possible? Yes, ofcourse! I also use a tube amp with a external DAC and Squeeezeboxes.
