Re: [Aus-soaring] [gfaforum] RE: AAT tasking

2017-12-04 Thread Jacques Graells
The problem is not finding a solution to avoid start games and gaggles, first
we need to convince the pilots that such practices are undesirable.

Some pilots think that start games and gaggles are an inherent part of
competition flying and believe it is good experience to train for them so
Australian pilots are better prepared for international competitions.
Unfortunately that happens endangering the lives of all the other pilots who
join in the same event.

I am convinced we would see more people in competitions if they felt safer.

A democratic vote to see what competition and potential competition pilots
really want would be a good start, not just asking to the converted during
pilots meetings at competitions.

I feel that it is time we moved away from free starts, whether start line or
start points. I favour moving to a series of GP heats - maybe only 5 or so
pilots in each heat with a GP start asap after the last pilot in each heat has
launched. No gaggles, start games or delaying tactics. Each day the pilots
would be rotated to fly with a different set of opponents. After x days, pilots
would be split into ranked groups for the ‘finals’. Winner of the ‘gold’ group
would be the national champion. Pilots in the other groups would compete for
the first place in their group.

I don’t think you flew those nats.

One of the major problems apparent was too many aircraft converging on one
point to start.

Solution offered was to limit competitors to 2 per state in each class and each
class comp. be flown from separate sites that had the ability to launch 14
sailplanes within a space established in their normal ops.

That idea was accepted and I was elected to the sports committee which I
attended on two occasions at my own cost with no GFA subsidy to put my case.

It was a waste of my time as I couldn’t overcome the egos of WW and RW.

The AAT is seen as a way of mitigating the risks of mid airs in contests.

Now let's see: Collision risk goes up as the SQUARE of the number of
participants in any one contest. How do we reduce the total risk to find our
champions?

You can find it in the awesome spreadsheet made by Jim Rennie.

If you google you may be able to find a newer version that displays better

I am looking for a graph that I have seen which is essentially the same as
this one, just a little better drawn:

http://www.glidingcaboolture.org.au/Competing/McCredie/72price5.jpeg

However the one I want has the climb rate lines drawn in different colours
and the values are in knots (or metres/sec) rather than fpm.
I thought it was in one of the usual soaring reference books but can't seem
to find it. Any ideas where I can find it? A URL would be nice.
Thanks, Bernie.

Re: [Aus-soaring] [gfaforum] Handicaps

2017-03-04 Thread Jacques Graells
As I said, maybe the DRY handicaps for sports class need review, the ballasted
were changed a year or 2 ago, time at which I was told the DRY handicaps for
sports class are no longer used because the Sports Nats are competed ballasted
but we still use the DRY sports handicaps in other events.

If we change anything to the handicaps the pilots will crucify us. It has to

Just a reminder that we still have a few spots left in the Keepit Regatta which
is in 5 weeks from now from the 25 Feb to the 4th March.

The Keepit Regatta is a no pressure, fun event to improve cross country skills
and an introduction to competition.

We limit the entries to 30 so there is no stress and big gaggles.

In the morning we run briefing sessions on topics of interest for glider pilots
then we run an AAT tasks and all join in for dinner (optional)

There is possibility for team flying, lead & follow, coaching and flight
analysis.

The Keepit Regatta is equally suitable for the new pilots that want to learn as
well as for seasoned pilots that want to take it easy, enjoy a relaxed event
and if they wish, pass on their knowledge to the new generations.

The entry fee is only $140 per person catering will be available at reasonable
prices.

If you do not have a glider, one of our D2’s is still available for hire for
the event.

Details and registration here:

Or you can contact me directly if you have any query

Thanks again everyone.

I just need the number of performance (excluding landing flap) flap
positions not the actual degrees although the latter may help.

Looks like 6 is the most common number. We're constructing a look up table
in eeprom and need to know how many numbers we need to hold.

In a discussion this afternoon we may have found a way to do this this
without going to so much trouble.
