[Aus-soaring] Garmin 12 xl repairs / GPS wanted
Hi, Does anyone know who still repairs Garmin 12xl GPS units. Three or so years back I had link to a place that sent them to Korea or Hong Kong for internal battery replacement and/or repairs, this was basically a change-over service, but I can no longer find this site, and an internet search turns up one post in australia back in about 2004. Garmin website has no suggestion they support anything except warranty. As these units are still very handy and the user interface is simple and clear, I'd like get mine going. It has failed and when On button is held, it gives a warning UPLOAD NOT PRESENT and will not start. So that doesn't look like an internal battery problem. (yes it has had good batteries installed always, so the internal one was not drained) Otherwise, anyone with aGarmin 12xl or 12cx FOR SALE, please email me at ssm...@bigpond.com thanks Stu___ Aus-soaring mailing list Aus-soaring@lists.internode.on.net To check or change subscription details, visit: http://lists.internode.on.net/mailman/listinfo/aus-soaring

Hi Stu, if you contact Garmin customer support they will be able to tell you if your device can be repaired. I doubt it will be economical.. I had a self inflicted issue with my 76CS and just bought another unit on ebay. You could always get a second hander: http://www.ebay.com/ctg/Garmin-GPS-12-Handheld-s-GPS-Receiver-/48465169?_refkw=garmin+12_pcatid=43_pcategid=156955_from=R40_dmpt=GPS_Devices_dashexp=1 .. Re: [Aus-soaring] Garmin 12 xl repairs / GPS wanted
In my experience, it is not worth the trouble to contact Garmin in Australia. I have a Garmin GPS II+ (a parallel model to the GPS12xl and of a very similar age). It had been displaying the Memory Battery is Low for a very long time. I had contacted company reps about this at various field days and was told that if I installed a new set of alkaline battery, the memory battery would recharge and all would be well. That got me out of their display area, but it didn't work. The message persisted. In time and with the advent of faster internet I went looking for other solutions. Indeed I found that there was an issue with some of the memory backup batteries with the models of that vintage, and that Garmin Aust were rectifying the problem if users retuned the unit to them. I contacted them by email and was asked to post it over to them at nominated address and it would be repaired.Three weeks later it came back with the message that this model was no longer serviceable due to its age, and advising me to visit a dealer and purchase a newer model. :-( On that basis I would suggest that you save the expense and time involved in contacting Garmin Aust. You may quote me as being dissatisfied with their level of customer service. (They already know this). I agree that the user interface of the both the GPS II+ and the 12xl units were very good indeed. We used to have the latter model in our CFS truck. Buying second hand needs to be done with caution because of the known issue with the memory battery, and the fact that they _are_ now getting on in years anyway.I still use my GPS II+ on the motor bike but it needs to be powered up constantly to retain settings and waypoints. The MAP 76 series which we now have in fire truck is somewhat similar to the 12 series and works well. However that too seems to have superseded by colour screen versions which naturally cost quite a bit more. Garmin seem to supersede their models at a very high rate which makes it very hard to keep abreast of their features. I guess there's more money in selling new models than in repairing or updating ones which are several years old. Don't tell me - you would also be dissatisfied if HP refused to service your 486 PC How can they service something they can't get parts for themselves ? Re: [Aus-soaring] Garmin 12 xl repairs / GPS wanted
Stu, I looked into this a year or two back. I think there was somebody (not Garmin), in the US who offered do something (but very expensive -$100 plus?, and shipping on top of that) - otherwise bad luck old chap! If I remember correctly the factory was in Thailand. Units had to go back to the factory as the plastic cases were welded(?) together, and thus had to be cut open to get at the guts. Once the problem was fixed, the case needed to be replaced. My guess is that in practice, a unit under warranty (or returned for service), was just junked, and a brand new replacement unit issued. At that time, if you looked on eBay they were regularly offered for sale with very low starting prices - about $20.00. You might check the current situation. However keep in mind that for any unit available, the internal battery must be getting near to the end of its life. Stu Think it may have lost date and where it is I will find guff later on laptop but check date and UTC time and if it is think 2005 or before. Connect to battery for a few days and then get Hyperterminal to enter new date and time and Lat and long approx and you may be in luck (I need to send you this) You will need data cable for Garmin If Date is approx right then you have another problem I can hot help with. Just remember in future USE it of you will LOOSE it again Ian M On 13 June 2012 07:09, S S ssm...@bigpond.com wrote: Hi, Does anyone know who still repairs Garmin 12xl GPS units. Stu Back again Read others comments but usually can be done. I forgot to say I then leave it running ON a full week after it logs in then leave it OFF a week tor make sure internal battery is holding charge. Trust me it is not rocket science and just takes time. I recently got one going in a Cambridge Model 20 from late 90s a month or so ago Beats replacing garmin engine as now engines are 1/4 size of originals Ian McPhee On 13 June 2012 14:53, Ian Mc Phee mrsoar...@gmail.com wrote: Stu Think it may have lost date and where it is I will find guff later on laptop but check date and UTC time and if it is think 2005 or before.
