I have uploaded a Quicktime movie on vintage gliding. It is a series
of old Movietone and Pathe clips, some with a watermark, showing
sailplanes in the '30s at places like Dunstable, Brooklands,
Wasserkuppe, Italy, France and even at what appears to be Stanwell
Park. Launches are by bungy, winch and aerotow.

In the Stanwell sequence, the voice over (or observation is it is
called in the clip) claims the glider top lands on a horse. Well it
nearly does. When the glider does a 360º turn close to the hill, the
sink rate makes a standard Rogallo look impressive. Certainly top
landing a sailplane at Stanwell would take a bit of nerve.

It takes my breath away to see some of the beautiful gull wing planes
of the era almost scraping a wing tip on a ridge. And I wonder what
would happen now if someone tried to fly one of Patch's group's
 sailplanes in the same way!

 http://www.4shared.com/file/111471806/df3eb297/Vintage_Gliding_Video.html

I would appreciate any feedback on the Stanwell sequence from people
 with more knowledge than me.

The clips were supplied by Angelo Crapanzano from Italy.

Yes exactly the same problem, I have tried it on several different players,
real player, quicktime, windows media player and some other players I have
and all exactly the same, they recognise the file and appear to play it -
but with a blank screen and no audio.

I have also downloaded some video codec packs and loaded them - still no joy
:-(
Maybe this was video was encoded with a particular codec similar to, Divex
MP4 etc?

Tried that Ben - still no go. I think it's simply that I don't have the
right codec on my machine and no matter what player I try will make no
difference. Obviously there is a particular video codec in the Mac operating
system which is not generally loaded on Windows machines. Now I've just got
to find which codec that is!! Or as you have rather helpfully suggested go
out an buy a MAC!

Tried that Ben - still no go. I think it's simply that I don't have the right
codec on my machine and no matter what player I try will make no difference.
Obviously there is a particular video codec in the Mac operating system which
is not generally loaded on Windows machines. Now I've just got to find which
codec that is!! Or as you have rather helpfully suggested go out an buy a MAC!

Get a Mac (sorry couldn't resist)

Out in the rain? Raincoats are always a handy solution. (mac might just be a
Pom expression, sorry)

A note to those who haven't got a mac: I bought what was referred to as
the $2000 paperweight (17 Macbook
Pro) and spent more time trying to make it fit into my life than any
other computer I ever owned. Six months later, the damn thing was sold. Nothing
is perfect.

Haven't downloaded the Vintage video yet, but Good Start is great! Thanks,
Alex. What an amazing comp! A few familiar faces and thought I heard Patch's
dad in there somewhere. Had forgotten that my cousin flew at Waikerie. He
didn't do well.

File converted to MP4 (using H.264 video and AAC audio encoding) -
http://www.4shared.com/file/111682609/98321b38/Vintage_Gliding_Video.html

There may still be problems as I can't get this to convert to AVI
format from either the original or the MP4, but at least internally,
it is a single clip using very common encoding.

And I'll repeat - get a MAC ! In 3 years I estimate it has saved me 15
weeks of re-installing windows and software - the 2-3 weeks it took to
get used to it has been worth it !

[Aus-soaring] Vintage Sailplane Video

2009-06-12 Thread DMcD
Thanks for Zulu Romeo!

2009-06-12 Thread Bernie Baer
See http://blipmap.walsys.net/forum/index.php?topic=80.0

The landing was made between what we HG pilots called 'The Point' and 'The
Knob' (Stony Batter), in the area that is now occupied by the toilet block,
road, and scrub. In those days most of the timber was Red Cedar and was cut
down; the current vegetation is regrowth.
