I am researching Manuel Duarte De Mello b. abt. 1872 Sao Miguel. His
wife is listed as Francisca Vittoria(sp?) b. abt. 1877 Sao Miguel. I
believe they married in the US and would appreciate if someone who has
NEHGS could look up a marriage ca 1893. Their first son Antone Mello
was born June 9, 1896, Manuel Duarte Mello, Jr. b. July 20, 1898, Gill
Mello b. abt. 1904. They were all born in Fairhaven/New Bedford area.
I would like a lookup of their birth records to see how parents names
are listed and birthplace of parents - they did have several other
children whose names I have (trying not to be too greedy). I am
trying to find out exactly where in Sao Miguel they came from. The
parents are listed as coming to US 1891 but I cannot find the ship
they came over on. Manuel Sr. also went by Manuel Duarte. I found
the WWI Draft Regis. for Manuel Duarte Mello Jr. but the one who I
think is the father has the wrong birthdate and address. I have found
them on all census records. I believe Francisca had a sister Maria
Vittoria who married an Antone Resendes(sp?) and it looks like they
 had no children.

Thanks for any help you can give me.

2009-02-19 Thread Judi Phillips

Hi E,

I found a marriage in Fall River for Manuel de Mello and Francisca Tavares Aug
12, 1894, he age 22, she age 19. His parents were Jose and Helena Mello, her's
Manuel Francisca C. Frazaeo(?). They were from Sao Miguel. I also found a
birth for Manuel in New Bedford 1898, but the film can not be read. I have a
Jose Correa de Mello and Helena Chaves de Mello in my tree. My Helena was born
1858 in either Capelas or Santo Antonio. If they are the same, I have a lot of
info on Helena's side. Haven't looked up Jose's yet.

I can look up the rest of the children if you want. Let me know.

I looked further into the Fall River marriage I sent you. I don't think that
one is correct.

I found a marriage on Feb 5 1894 for Manuel Duarte and Francisca Victoria, both
age 20, in New Bedford. A lot of times they didn't use their last names on
these records.

Parents: Jose Duarte and Maria Jacintha, and Jose da Costa and Victoria de
Amaral. Place of birth St. Michaels, no village. No luck with children under
Duarte, but I'll keep looking.

2009-02-19 Thread Ginger

Hi Elaine,

I hope this helps.

I found a Marriage for Manuel Duarte and Francisca Victoria, 3 Feb
1894, in New Bedford.

They were both residents of New Bedford and were married by A. G.
Neves, Priest.

They were both from St. Michael, Azores.

His parents names were listed as, Jose Duarte and Maria Jacintha.

Her parents names were listed as, Jose da Costa and Victoria Amaral.

None of the others I found were even close to this. I had no luck at
all using de Mello or Mello.

[AZORES-Genealogy] Re: Manuel Duarte DeMello - Fairhaven MA - NEHGS help

2009-02-19 Thread E Sharp

Judi and Nancy and Elly,

Thank you for the lookups. Judi, looks like you have found their
marriage record as their first child of record was born in 1896- in
1900 census, they had 3 children born and 2 living so it is possible a
first child was born before 1896. Thank you so much. Did you find
this on Ancestry? Did it happen to list where they were living? I
know my own grandfather lived in NB married in Fall River. I still
haven't figured out why. Does anyone else have an answer to this?

Here are the rest of the children, born before 1910, (I think this is
what NEHGS goes to) from census record info:

George Mello b. abt. 1905
Adelina (Lola) Mello b. abt. 1908
Marie Mello b. 1909

In 1900, 1910, 1920, 1930 censuses, the family of Manuel Duarte
deMello always lived in Fairhaven. In the 1900 and 1910 census, he
used the surname Duarte, 1920 they started using Mello. Manuel Sr.
must have died between the 1920/1930 censuses as in 1930, his wife,
Francesca Mello is listed as a widow. I am surprised the sons Manuel
Duarte Mello Jr. b. 7/20/1898 and Antone b. Jun 9, 1896 are not listed
but I know in those days some births were not recorded or recorded 2
or 3 years later.

Thank you, too, Elly. NEHGS is a New England Genealogy subscription
program which lists birth, death, marriages to 1910, I believe they
are in the process of updating it to 1915.

Again, thank you all so much for your help on this.

it seems he used the Duarte name until ca 1920 then changed it to

[AZORES-Genealogy] Graciosa family - Baptismal Records from Nossa Senhora da Luz

2009-02-19 Thread Kawika322

Hello to all (especially others who have family from Graciosa),

Looking for legible baptismal records from Nossa Senhora da Luz from
1612-1796.

I am doing research on my family from Graciosa in both the parishes of
Nossa Senhora da Luz and Nossa Senhora de Sao Mateus. The surnames I
am researching are DE SOUZA NETO from Nossa Senhora da Luz and
D'ATHAIDE, also spelled ATAYDE or ATAIDE from Nossa Senhora de Sao
Mateus.

My g.g. grandmother was Luzia NETO, born Apirl 25, 1865 in Nossa
Senhora da Luz. Her parents were Jose de SOUZA NETO and Francisca
Carolina D'ATHAIDE. Luzia had 2 other siblings that I know of - Manuel
SOUZA NETO, born April 22, 1861 and Maria SOUZA NETO, born January 9,
1859 both from N.S. da Luz. Jose SOUZA NETO (Luzia's father) was born
April 17, 1826 in N.S. da Luz. Francisca Carolina D'ATHAIDE was born
November 25, 1826 in N.S. de Sao Mateus. her parents were Domingos
Antonio D'ATHAIDE and Maria Candida COELHO. They were married March 1,
1813 in N.S. de Sao Mateus. Jose de SOUZA NETO's parents were Jose de
SOUZA NETO and Delfina Roza THOMAZIA (IGNACIA), both from N.S. da Luz.
They were married December 28, 1806 in N.S. da Luz.

I have been able to find more informatoin on the ATHIADE side of the
family, as the baptismal records from Nossa Senhora de Sao Mateus are
more legible than Nossa Senhora da Luz. The baptismal records that I
have access to at the FHC for Nossa Senhora da Luz from 1612-1796
(film # 1547221, items 9-16) are for the most part illegible and very
hard to impossible to read. I think either the originals were in that
bad condition or more likely what it seems like is that the records
were microfilmed out of focus and therefore are unable to be read.

Does anyone have access to legible baptismal records for Nossa Senhora
da Luz during the timeperiod of 1612-1796? Or does anyone have
baptismal record index for that parish?

Also, if anyone has connections to this family, any information would
be greatly appreciated. Since there aren't too many posting on
Graciosa, maybe all of us researchers can compile a database of
records, names and dates and family trees.

Hope to hear from anyone who has any ideas.

   Thanks,

   David Freitas Buckley
