I have birth, death, and marriage dates for all of my father's siblings, (including two that died young)as well as for all their children. My grandfather always identified himself as Louis Pacheco Rose, (within the family) but in all the census listings, he was always know as Louis Rose. There is a Luiz Pacheco who came to the states in 1902, on the Dona Maria, and was going to his brother in Fall River. As the age and year of birth coincide with the information I have about my grandfather, and that his brother was Frank, I believe it is a record of his passage. He and my grandmother were married in NL on April 24,1905. My grandmother, on the other hand, is somewhat of a mystery. I cannot find her listed on any of the passenger manifests, and I have looked through many of them. I would be interested in any advice you might have as to other avenues to explore. I have been to the FHC in Groton and ordered one microfilm, trying to nail down Maria Victoria. I believe her sisters were Constance,Sophia, Evangeline and Diamata. I remember visiting them in E. Providence, but I was too young to remember their last names. Also, Manuel, Joseph and Antone Victoria were her brothers, Manuel (and Margaret) lived on Water Street, and Joseph on Elm St. Connie Pacheco from Summit St was somehow related, and the family story is that my grandmother came to the states to help with the "Pine" twins. Connie20is listed in the 1920 census under Manuel Rose. ( I believe her mother's name was Mary) I think her twin brother's name was Eugene and he went by the name Eugene Rose Pine. I live in Uncasville, just north of the USCGA, would love to meet up with you sometime and share info, and maybe you could help me with the finer points of translation! thanks, Elly -Original Message- From: henriettama...@sbcglobal.net To: Azores@googlegroups.com Sent: Thu, 26 Feb 2009 9:27 pm Subject: [AZORES-Genealogy] Re: Ribeira Seca and Ribeira Grande Hi Ellie, When your grandfather died he was listed as Louis Pacheco Rose. [AZORES-Genealogy] Plymouth, MA Family
I am new to this group so please be patient. I have been trying to research my Portuguese roots with little to no lucky. My Grandfather was a ship builder in Plymouth named Frank Jesse (Jacintho?). He married Francis Nunes de Silva. I have the Ellis island report of my Grandfather coming to the US (twice) but am having no luck with my Grandmother. My GGrandfather was also Frank (Francisco?) Jesse (Jacintho?). His wife was Jacintha Jacintho (maiden name same as married name). Both Franks came from San Miguel, and Francis came from Pico. My mother always said her mother had a sister in California. [AZORES-Genealogy] Re: SATA questions
I want to thank everyone for their replies on my SATA questions. I, too, have heard it is less expensive to purchase tickets within the islands while you are there but I didn't want to take any chances of not getting a seat as my schedule is tight. Maybe I will be a little more carefree next time. When picking my seats from Lisbon to Ponta Delgada, the plane looked about 1/2 full. I am looking forward to the trip - to walk where my grandmother (whose baptism record still escapes me) walked, bless her soul, where our family circus performed, to go to the orphanage my g-aunt was in in sao miguel, eat some great food, and just have some great fun! [AZORES-Genealogy] Re: SATA questions
We were not able to make any seat reservations between islands. Sometimes they make it appear or sound like you may, but you can't (of course unless they change their guidelines). One little funny situation - we're at the Terceira airport getting ready to depart. We arrived early to get seat upgrades to first class (before the ticket counter even opened). They had only two first seats to upgrade and we were a party of five, so we didn't do it. Thanks GOODNESS we didn't since the cost was about $500 per person. We even asked for seat changes and were told there werent' any. We board the plane and it was basically EMPTY. Go figure! All the teenagers and early-twenty somthings who stayed out too late with friends during the San Joaninas celebration each had their own entire row to sleep on. I bet only a quarter of the plane was full returning home. They say this isn't normal as the season goes on, but we were the first flight from Oakland heading over, so I guess the first flight back and many people were staying longer than the two weeks we were there. Hi "E", My parents and others are always told by travel agents here in Canada that they should just purchase their SATA inter-island tickets when they are actually in one of the islands. The only reason for this is just becasue their schedules change and also because the cost of the tickets are much cheaper when you buy them there (Azores). Maybe someone on this board who actually lives there (Azores) can give you better advice but this is what is done by my parents and others. Elaine, my experience with SATA interisland flights is that they do not have assigned seats. I believe that was the same with my Lisbon to Terceira flilghts. As for delays and cancellations, that can happen without notice if the weather is bad. I spent half a day in the airport in Terceira trying to get a flight to Faial. They just keep delaying the fllight, never cancelled it. I finally took the boat, that took 8 hrs. because the weather was bad. [AZORES-Genealogy] PEREIRA, AZEVEDO, ENOS, SILVA, SAO JORGE
Searching for info on family of Jorge Pereira Azeved &, wife Marianna Joaquina Silveira from Sao Jorge. I think Jorge died in the islands. Marianna, born in 1810 came to California, Marin county, to live with her son Antone. Jorge and Marianna had sons Antone born in 1850, Joaquin, Jose born in 1833, Manuel and Francisco and a daughter Mary. There may have been one more son. Some California towns I've heard mentioned are Peteluma, Half Moon Bay, Sausalito. In the 1870 census, Marin county, there was a John Cabral age 18 living with Jose and his wife Maria and 6 month old son Antone. Any info would be greatly appreciated. [AZORES-Genealogy] Re: Mello/Amaral
Thanks, Cheri, for the additional information. The church will be the No. 1 place I visit on my trip back East. I think I have some family members who still belong to this church so I will lean on them, if I have to. I need one or two other records from them, also. [AZORES-Genealogy] Re: Mello/Amaral
P.S. Out of the 25 documents I collected on my immigrant ancestors, it was the actual marriage book itself that listed the freguesia. That was the only document. The other documents listed the island or the council, but I didn't know that (Vila Franca...the council or the city??) It took me 4 years to find the marriage too. --~--~-~--~~~---~--~~ To unsubscribe from this group, send email to azores-unsubscr...@googlegroups.com. [AZORES-Genealogy] Re: Mello/Amaral
Elaine, When I went there to see the book, the priest at the time would not let me actually read the book. He said it was private. However, the marriage I wanted was more than 95 years old, so I think MA law says it was in public domain, but I didn't push it. I just started to pester him with questions. Did the book list the bride's maiden name? (No, he just typed that on the certificate because I stated the name of the bride and groom). Does it list their ages? Does it list the relationship of the witnesses to the bride and groom? He had to keep looking at the book because I was asking questions. Then the phone rang. He answers the phone and I start to read the book, upside down. It was in Latin so I had to stare at it real hard. He sees me and closes the book. He hangs up the phone and I'm going to ask another question when he says he'll read it (as only his eyes can see it) but it's in Latin so he'll translate. Manuel de Mello, a native of Ribeira das TainhasI almost when through the roof. I pulled out my Guill book (that got his attention) to look at the map. Then I wrote everything he read to me on a piece of paper. Later, another priest was assigned there who told me that yes, there was a note about a dispensation in the margin. That priest said I could have looked at the book, it was just the previous priest's way not to allow anyone except Church officials to see it. Neither of those priests are there anymore. Hopefully, they will be more like the 2nd priest and you'll get the info you need. Cheri --~--~-~--~~~---~--~~ To unsubscribe from this group, send email to azores-unsubscr...@googlegroups.com. [AZORES-Genealogy] Veterino? Bettencourt? Vieira? Oliveira?
Greetings Group, I'm very confused.all these names! I sent to Saint John the Baptist Church in New Bedford for the marriage records of two sets of my GGrandparents.1888, AntonioTexiera Baptista (Sao Jorge)and Maria Catherina Cabral (Santa Maria).only surprise in those records were the witnesses, apparently she had a brother in this country so that is a good clue to pursue. My problem is my GGrandfather, my Moms mothers father, Joseph Veterino, (b.1863 Sao Jorge), he always said that he was Joseph Veterino Bettencourt, and my Mom has old pictures of he and a brother who used the last name Bettencourt. He married Frances Rose Enos (b. 1868 or 69 Sao Jorge).who had a brother, Frank Lemos, so I was able to find her in the ships arriving and her real name was Rosa Francisca Lemos. Next I found their civil marriage record in NEGHSJan 7, 1893he's 29, he gives his name as Jose Enos Victorino and his fathers name as Thomazo de Vieira and his mother is Anna Joaquinajust says from Sao Jorge for both he and Frances Rose.she gives her name as Francisca Roza Lemos...parents Manuel Silveira Lemos and mother Anna Bernarda. So I asked St. Johns for the record of the marriage, I mentioned that I wanted to know parents names. They sent me the "Certificate of Marriage" and a letter with him listed as Jose Enos Victorino...Sao Jorgeson of Thomas d' Oliveira and Anna Joaquina. I have no idea now who he really was! Her info was the same as NEGHS had. I'm at a lossI have been looking at the Sao Jorge baptisms in the CCA site for 1863not quite finished.. Suggestions? I know that Frances Rose had a sister Anna Lemos who married a man named Frank Azevedo Joseph Veterino and Frances Rose, they lived on Rockdale Ave. in New Bedford and had: 8 children George Veterinodied unmarried Clara .my Grandmothermarried Emanuel Joseph Perry Frank who married..Clara Morris (Morais?) John married Anna Fernandes Joseph married Stella ? Rose married Antone Gracia Frances married Fred Salles Anna married George Smith Can anyone connect with my mystery family? [AZORES-Genealogy] Re: Mello/Amaral
Greetings, I just 2 days ago received the "Certificates of Marriage" from Saint Johns that I requested for the marriages of two sets of Ggrandparents, one in 1888 and one in 1893. I was not aware of "a book" to ask them to look in for the freguesia however I did tell them that I wanted to know the names of their parents. They also sent a letter with their names and their parents and island names but nothing else. Perhaps I should call back and ask if this info was all there was. I will make a new thread about how this information confused me further than I already was! Nancy Jean Date: Tue, 3 Mar 2009 21:58:19 -0800 Subject: [AZORES-Genealogy] Re: Mello/Amaral From: gfsche...@gmail.com To: Azores@googlegroups.com "Ordering the record" will probably result in that half-size sheet of paper titled "Holy Matrimony" or "Certificate of Marriage." (or whatever it is called). It's a fill in the blank form that will say bride married groom on date by priest and witness were X & Y. Inside the marriage book at St. John the Baptist it will state the freguesia that the bride and groom are from and it will be noted in the margin if they needed a dispensation. It's written in Latin (in the book) but you can figure it out. Cheri _ Express your personality in color!
