Most of the immigrants that are Portuguese in USA, are from the Azores. Anytime
you ask one where you from? They will tell you Portugal. Even today my family
members and friends going to visit, they allways say they are going to Portugal.
Many of them never even been to mainland Portugal, one thousand miles away.

[AZORES-Genealogy] Re: Advice - Information on Immigration From Azores to...

2009-04-01 Thread E Sharp

Judi,

The book came from Santa Maria after a kind listmember, a while back,
told me about it and I was able to have a friend help me obtain a
copy. I will be in the Azores (not Santa Maria) and will see if/how
one can get a copy today. I don't exactly remember, but I think the
cost was $15/20. I do not have the book - I sent it to my sister's
daughter in law and she gave it to her parents. If I can figure out
the process, I will try to email the list while on the islands. I am
not taking my laptop this time.

I have a couple of other genealogy books I am interested in buying
while I am in Lisbon.

2009-04-01 Thread bellemarco
Marek,

I think this is him:

The 1900 cenus has him listed as Joseph Francis and and wife Amelia living
in Yreka. It says he was born Dec. 1830, married 41 years, born Portugal,
came to US in 1852 and is a Naturalized citizen, and a miner.
Wife: Amelia b. March 1841, 9 children born 7 living, came to US 1871
ch: Amelia b. May 1882 in Portugal, came to US 1871 (this obviously is a
mistake by the census taker-she wasn't born yet!)
Joseph b. Jan 1884 CA
Mary b. Oct. 1885 CA
Clara b. Mar. 1887 CA
Johann b. Sep. 1888
Manuel b. Nov. 1890 CA
Henry b. Aug. 1893 CA

You might try and obtain his CA naturalization records. Will be hard to
find on ship's manifest as the year is very early and we do not know where
he entered the US and records are not so great for that timeframe.
Guessing, he came over on a whaler?

[AZORES-Genealogy] Re: Azores/Mainland to Brazil

2009-04-01 Thread nancy jean baptiste

Hi Chris,

I enjoy this group and the avenue it provides for finding kin as we say in
the south! In our case I guess we're 1/2 cousins! Ines Pereira Macedo was the
2nd wife of Francisco Costa Goulart. Your grandmother, Catarina Nascimento
was their 1st child of 8.

Born 12-16-1710 her sister, Rita Inacia Macedo, married Jose Rodrigues
Medeiros, b. 8-13-1718, son of Joao Rodrigues Serpa, b. 2-21-1683 and Ana
Medeiros, b.9-18-1689...They had 8 childrenJose was the brother of
Josefa Maria Conceicao,b. 4-20-1721, she's my gggarndmother! (on my
grandmothers side)So there's that connection by marriage..but also, on my
grandmothers side

I'm related by the 1st wife of Francisco Costa Goulart, her name was

Catarina Dias Machado, and she had 2 children with Francisco, the second was,
Beatriz Santo Antonio,b. 2-12-1706, she was also ggrandmother on my
grandmothers side but to my grandmothers husband..(my grandfathers line was da
Castro)

It's all very confusing in that line because there were so many cousin
marriages..

My ggrandmother, Ludovina Felizarda da Castro was 1st cousin to her husband,
Manuel Furtado Cardoza...

I guess it's a good thing they left Candelaria for a little outside DNA when
they did!

I hope this isn't too difficult to read,

[AZORES-Genealogy] Portuguese Immigrants by Carlos Almeida

2009-04-01 Thread celeste perry

While browsing in the used book store in Hayward, CA, I found 2 copies of a
book that may be of interest to someone on the list.
Portuguese Immigrants (The centennial story of the Portuguese Union of the
state of California) by Carlos Almeida, written in 1978.
My copy of the book (which I inherited from my aunt) has a flyer with the
following : Portuguese Immigrants, a centennial story of
Portuguese Union of the state of California, is the result of ten years of
research done by Carlos Almeida.
In this book, Almeida narrates candidly the lives of many immigrants and the
important role they played and still play in California’s economy from dairying
to banking. The book is a testimony to all who came to the golden state to make
it their home. It includes a brief outline of the Azores, its people and the
difficulties encountered by Portuguese immigrants from whaling days to modern
day times in their attempt to make life a bit better for themselves and their
families when settling in Hawaii, Canada and California.
The book has an appendix listing family names of Portuguese pioneers who
settled in California as well as the most complete study ever made on the
Portuguese anglicized names.
An index and a bibliography of primary and secondary sources used in the
making of this unique work about Portuguese in California is also provided.
The book contains over one hundred illustrations.
On the back of the flyer are the following comments:
It really is a most fascinating account of the Portuguese and Azoreans in
California, and I enjoyed every minute of the four days it took me to read it
all. Your efforts to collect and list Anglicized surnames of Portuguese
families in California is a first step in scholarship in that area as far as I
know. Ronald Silveira de Braganza, Special Collections bibliographer,
University of California, San Diego.
I recommend the book to casual readers of history as well as to those
interested in the history of California and its various ethnic groups.
Almeida'’ book will be treasured for years as a source book and reference by
students and writers. John Sandoval, Historian-Columnist – The Daily Review,
Hayward.
I read immediately your book with great interest and could not wait to tell
you that my impression is an excellent one. I learned a lot and admired the
valuable compilation of data and illustrations of enormous historical interest.
The work is not only the history of the U.P.E.C.. It is above all a revelling
analysis of facts and attitudes through almost a century of the Portuguese
presence in California…It is the first time a true, serious, academic, and well
documented work is done about our history here. My sincere congratulations.
Edward Mayone Dias, Ph.D., University of California, Los Angeles, Department of
Spanish and Portuguese, Los Angeles, CA 90024
I have examined the contents closely and I am impressed with the scholarly
research necessary for such an extensive well written history of the Portuguese
in California. The book is eminently readable and certainly filled out a story
for me that was fragmentary in the past. Stephen D. Ewing, Library Directory,
City of San Leandro, CA.
I paid $25.00 each for the books and will sell them for that price plus
postage to you. If interested, contact me off list at ccgranmap at yahoo dot
com.

2009-04-01 Thread Rosemarie Capodicci
For anyone thinking about buying this book, it's well worth it especially if
you had ancestors who were members of the UPEC. It's worth it just for the
names in the back showing the Portuguese and the English form that most people
took. I have two copies myself; one a hard back I found at a book store and one
I purchased from Mr. Almeida which he signed. It even lists the Councils and
their date of organization.

My copy of the book (which I inherited from my aunt) has a flyer
with the following : Portuguese Immigrants, a centennial story of
Portuguese Union of the state of California, is the result of ten years of
research done by Carlos Almeida.
In this book, Almeida narrates candidly the lives of many immigrants
and the important role they played and still play in California’s economy from
dairying to banking. The book is a testimony to all who came to the golden
state to make it their home. It includes a brief outline of the Azores, its
people and the difficulties encountered by Portuguese immigrants from whaling
days to modern day times in their attempt to make life a bit better for
themselves and their families when settling in Hawaii, Canada and California.
The book has an appendix listing family names of Portuguese pioneers
who settled in California as well as the most complete study ever made on the
Portuguese anglicized names.
An index and a bibliography of primary and secondary sources used in
the making of this unique work about Portuguese in California is also provided.
The book contains over one hundred illustrations.
On the back of the flyer are the following comments:
It really is a most fascinating account of the Portuguese and
Azoreans in California, and I enjoyed every minute of the four days it took me
to read it all. Your efforts to collect and list Anglicized surnames of
Portuguese families in California is a first step in scholarship in that area
as far as I know. Ronald Silveira de Braganza, Special Collections
bibliographer, University of California, San Diego.
I recommend the book to casual readers of history as well as to
those interested in the history of California and its various ethnic groups.
Almeida'’ book will be treasured for years as a source book and reference by
students and writers. John Sandoval, Historian-Columnist – The Daily Review,
Hayward.
I read immediately your book with great interest and could not wait
to tell you that my impression is an excellent one. I learned a lot and admired
the valuable compilation of data and illustrations of enormous historical
interest. The work is not only the history of the U.P.E.C.. It is above all a
revelling analysis of facts and attitudes through almost a century of the
Portuguese presence in California…It is the first time a true, serious,
academic, and well documented work is done about our history here. My sincere
congratulations. Edward Mayone Dias, Ph.D., University of California, Los
Angeles, Department of Spanish and Portuguese, Los Angeles, CA 90024
I have examined the contents closely and I am impressed with the
scholarly research necessary for such an extensive well written history of the
Portuguese in California. The book is eminently readable and certainly filled
out a story for me that was fragmentary in the past. Stephen D. Ewing, Library

[AZORES-Genealogy] Re: Last Post Azores: Nine Islands...

2009-04-01 Thread JANET LAYTHAM
Thanks, Cheri

That's what I want - a history of the islands. I don't know if I'll ever get
around to family research.

About 10 years ago my daughter and I went to the islands and visited the
churches in the towns our grandparents were from. I had names and some alleged
birth dates, but the records had been relocated to Ponta Delgada. We
continued our exploration of my grandparent's islands rather than return to the
city for research in a language I don't read. In Velas, S.G. we found a
wonderful tour guide named Antonio Luis Ribeiro. We spent many happy days with
him touring S.G. and we identified one family home. He really loved Sao Jorge.

I have been watching the list for my family names, but they haven't popped up
yet. They are:
Jules Silva Branco, born May 8, 1875, presumably from Biscoitos or Calheta,
Sao Jorge
Rita Pedroza, his wife
My father was the only child born in the USA. His older siblings born in Sao
Jorge were Antonio, Bella (7-2-1913), Jules, Rita and Emma. In the USA the
family translated the name to White.

My mother's family is from San Miguel
Antonio Pimental from Bretanha
Mary Julia Felina from Maia

Pimental appears to be a very common name, but the other surnames I've listed
haven't appeared on this list.

I really look forward to reading this book to get the same type of historical
and cultural context about our roots that Americans of other nationalities can
easily access.

  Janet,

You email Char directly at researchpast at gmail dot com.

However, understand that this is a history book, not a how to do research
book. You won't find your ancestors in there. It's just a general history of
the islands. I had someone write me off list expressing their disappointment
in the book. This person thought James Guill's book was better. I'm sure that
there are others who have read both and will have a different opinion too.
Since James Guill is deceased and his book is out of print though, this new
book might help fill the need for a history in English. Help put things in
perspective.

Once you are on the site (using the web address below) you will see a list to
the right of the page. Click on Reistos Paroquisiais. When that loads there is
a list of Island and towns below them. Click on Velas, then the last village
listed is Rosais Baptisms, click on ver on the right of the town name. When
that comes up click on the dates and they take you to the baptisms for that
time period. If you are unfamilier with the Portuguese Church documents you
should start with the later records and try to read them. Go to Kathy Cardosa's
Website (which Cheri has listed resently) and download the Portuguese
Genealogical Word List and get yourself a good Portuguese to English dictionary
and you are off!!

I found a Joseph Francis b. abt. 1832 who came to the US June 25, 1852
on the schooner Waldron Holmes sailing from Fayal to Boston. It says
he is a mariner. There is also a Manuel Francis on this ship.

There is a Joseph Francis b. abt. 1832 also on the schooner Abby
Forest who came to the US August 1854, seaman, sailing from the Azores
to Boston. Actually there are 2 Joseph Francis on this ship but he is
6 years older.

There is a Joseph Francis b. abt 1832 on the Bark Halifax, September

Looks like it might be the same person going back and forth a couple

once when he sold one of his ship's overseas and was returning home so
don't let that throw you.

In the 1860 census, there is a Joseph Francis b. abt. 1831, Fayal ,
mariner, living on Nantucket Island. (There is something written
after his name but I do not know what it means). There is also a John
and Angelica Francis from Fayal living 3 doors down.

There's a Joseph Francis b. abt. 1833 living in Calaveras County CA.

There's another Joseph Francis b. abt. 1832, mariner, living in
Boston, but he is married with a child.

In 1870 census, your Joseph Francis with wife Amelia are living in
Yreka, CA both b. Western Island with children Mary 4, b. CA, Joseph
1, b. CA so Amelia must have come to the US before 1871. Living with
them is a Joseph Silva 30 also a miner b. Western Islands.

Hope this helps.
