I think the words "in the eyes of the church" on occasion appears on a
marriage record in Latin. At the end of the church records it says "et tu
supra" or something like that. I know that's Latin for "It was as above" or
something along those lines. I can kind of figure out Latin, even when it's
upside down and the priest doesn't want me to see what's in the book!

Remember, Portuguese language is closest modern language to Latin.  The words
you saw and thought were Latin probably were also Poruguese.

I didn't see them. My cousin vistied Ponta Delgalda in the 1980's and had
access to the actual books for Baptismal and Marriage certificates for
freguesia Santa Barbara, Santa Maria. Her husband knew Latin well and said some
of the earliest records used many Latin words. I don't know if all of the
record was in Latin. I stand corrected if this isn't so. I personally can't
make heads or tails of the micro fiche, but she said she can't either. The
actual books were easier to read, easier being a relative term.

Where are you located? My husband and I just went to look at micro fiche
thinking we could find information. All dates are written long hand.
I suggest you look at Cheri's pages on Azores Gen Web.
Part of the problem is bleeding through of ink and since
dates are not written as numbers finding dates not alone
names was hard (we left without anything).
Also, I understand some of the older records are written
in Latin so Portuguese is of little help.
If you are going to the Oakland Regional Center you might
want to go on a Wednesday when there is a man who
can help you with the Portuguese.
He will not Aug. 5th though.

Good luck,

Terri,

The Azores are set up differently than America or Canada. If you are doing
genealogy research, there will be only one library to visit. Biblioteca
Publica e Arquivo Regional de Ponta Delgada. They have the records from
about 1905 back to the beginning. There is no research to be done in a town
(I guess you mean freguesia). You can find the Civil Registry for each of
the 6 councils, but you'll need an exact date. They most likely won't let
you just search like the archive will. They hold from about 1906 to the
present. I've never had any luck with the churches. They were always
closed.

Good Luck,

[AZORES-Genealogy] Re: Planning to look up these Lagoa, S.M. films; what to expect?

2009-07-30 Thread Cheri Mello
Jesse,

You FHC may not have all these films on hand. You may need to order them.
They will help you with the ordering process.

I'd pick one marriage roll and maybe one baptism roll to start. If you
think the marriage is the late 1870s - early 1880s, I'd order that marriage
film. I'd subtract 25 years from the approx. marriage for a ball park
figure for the baptism of the bride and groom (unless you have other data).

Most rolls are broken up into Items. The workers at the FHC know what this
is. If you need marriages off of film 1438005 for about 1862, they will
help you find Item 3. There will be a title there that says Item 3. There
will be several books (most likely) in each item. You will have to scroll
to the 1862 book (or it may be in a book that runs from 18xx-18yy that
covers 1862). It may not be clearly labeled either. So you may have to
stop and read the document look for the words "one thousand eight hundred
and sixty two" written in Portuguese. If you don't know these words in
Portuguese, you can get the word list from FamilySearch.org here:
http://tinyurl.com/b2q9zx

You can also see a line by line translation from Portuguese to English on
the Azores Genweb here:
http://homepage.mac.com/kmacardoza/Genealogy/HowTo_Part_3a.html#reading

You can transcribe them by hand if you like. Some FHC have microfilm
printers and some even have scanners. At some FHCs, you can bring your USB
drive (thumb/flash/travel drive) and save it there. I think most FHCs allow
you to bring a camera, but I think you will need a mount.

The condition of the records will vary by time location and freguesia too.
As well as the priest/scribe. Some will have beautiful handwriting and some
will be absolutely horrible. Some of the records will be in good condtion
and some won't. They filmed what they could.

Hi group!  I am off to Sao Miguel Azores this Saturday.  I am hoping to get
lucky and pick up some more info at some of the libraries, church or towns. (It
will be short but hopefully I'll get to do this AND visit all the family)  I
went to visit the Family History Centre where i live but they unfortunately
didn't have much on Sao Miguel or the Azores for that matter. The woman there
went on line because she wasn't even sure of geneology groups for the Azores. I
told her how great people have been on here for me.  I also needed to provide
more info which i still didn't have.  Maybe when i get back. See ya!

island of Pico. There she raised her three children, Germana, Maria and Joao.
On Nov. 13, 1968, she immigrated to the U.S. with her family, and worked hard
to provide a better life for them.
She loved to attend church functions, dance, vacation on the beach in Half Moon

to crochet and knit, being surrounded by family and friends, passing on
traditional Portuguese customs, like making Portuguese doughnuts, sweetbread,
flat corn bread, traditional dances, and sharing her childhood experiences, and
adventures. She taught us the importance of love, respect, family and a good
laugh. In her last days, she expressed she wanted to dance with her husband

On July 21, 2009, Germana went home to be with our Lord. She is survived by

[AZORES-Genealogy] Planning to look up these Lagoa, S.M. films; what to expect?

2009-07-30 Thread Jesse

I recently put together a list of things I want to look up at a family
history center and these are the rolls I am planning on looking up:

Registros paroquiais, 1594-1883
Igreja Católica. Nossa Senhora do Rosário (Lagoa, Ponta Delgada)

Batismos 1789-1862 FHL INTL Film 1438003
Batismos 1863-1883 FHL INTL Film 1438004 Items 1-4
Casamentos 1594-1832 FHL INTL Film 1438004 Items 7-8
Casamentos 1832-1882 FHL INTL Film 1438005 Items 1-3

Registros paroquiais, 1555-1886
Igreja Católica. Santa Cruz (Lagoa, Ponta Delgada)

Batismos 1707-1832 FHL INTL Film 1438006
Batismos 1832-1877 FHL INTL Film 1438007
Batismos 1878-1884 FHL INTL Film 1438008 Items 1-2
Casamentos 1555-1676, 1688-1870 FHL INTL Film 1438008 Items 7-11
Casamentos 1871-1886 VAULT INTL Film 1438009 Item 1

I got all the roll information from familysearch.org. I hope I have
all the information organized right.

I was wondering if anyone with experience could just tell me what to
expect when looking these up. Obviously I don't plan or expect to find
all the records in one session, but how difficult is it to locate
records and information in these films? I don't speak any Portuguese,
but I have become familiar with some terms, mostly ones involved with
vital records. Will I have to transcribe the records by hand or are
there usually printers? (I know that would vary from location to
location. Maybe they would allow cameras?)

As you can probably tell I am very new to this. I know the staff are
very helpful, but since i'm dealing with non-English data I wanted to
be as prepared as possible.

Hi, I checked my database and I did not find them. I'm not at home, so I
am unable to help you with the syntax of how the records are set up in
Santa Barbara.

As just a guess, I would think, paternal grandparents and then maternal
grandparents would be included in the more recent records. The godparents
are also there. Sometimes they include the time of the birth, morning or
evening. That might be where you are getting lost.

Wish I had them in the database, that would make it much easier, but sorry
I don't. Theresa

As far as I can see the CCA site has been down all day. I haven't been able to
access the site since last evening.

Hi all;  Am I correct and the CCA site is currently down?  (Just making sure it
isn’t a problem on my end.)  Thanks, Sam in CA

Hi Rosemarie:  I have 1752 Francisco de Linhares, born Porto Judeau, Teixeira,
Azores.  His parents were:
3504 Melchior Coelho Borges X 3505 Ursula Coelha.
Would you check and see if you can find a DOM for Melchior X Ursula.  Thanks
very much.
1752 Francisco de Linhares married 1753 Beatriz de Avila Almeida in Villa Nova,
Teixeira on 8 Jan 1690.

I am guessing that 1752 Francisco might have been born about 1660+.  So his
parents were probably married around that time period.

Any help will be appreciated.  Thanks
Shirley

Subject: [AZORES-Genealogy] Portu Judeu Terceira Marriages

Dear Listers,

I've listed this before but with so many new members joining I thought I should
restate:

I have extractions of marriage records for Porto Judeu, Terceira, Azores from
1672 -- 1873 with April 1839 thru July 1860 missing. If you give me the name
sof the marrying couple and an approximate time period I will happily look up
the info. These extractions were done several years ago by Kathy Yasuna and she
kindly gave me a copy with the understanding that I would help anyone looking
for ancestors in Portu Judeu.

Please be as specific with the information as possible.

Thank you, Rosemarie
