Dear friends and fellow genealogists:

Please do not shoot the messenger! I too am a descendant of Velho Cabral's
sister Violante and his brother Álvaro. For many years I included Afonso III
and Madragana among their ancestors. But more recent research has shed new
light on their lineage and, alas, I have had to correct some very long
standing, but eroneous, lines. I include the fruit of my research in an
attachment. The best contemporary research on the lineage of the Cabrals is
Subsídios para Uma Biografia de Pedro Álvares Cabral by , Luís de Melo Vaz de
Sampaio, Universidade de Coimbra: 1971.

I offer this research in good faith and to prevent others from chasing after
false genealogies.

Best regards,

John Miranda Raposo

Ah, but for some interesting news and a twist on Mr Andre Costa

memory, rather it is because his records are intricately bound up with
another Andre Furtado (Sousa) of Ponta Garca, and it is indeed very
difficult to determine which is which. One is Andre Furtado Sousa who
was married to Escolastica Medeiros and whose marriage record is
missing. I figure there is a page or two missing from the Ponta Garca
records somewhere between 1748 and 1751 . I believe he was the son of
Manuel Sousa Furtado and Maria Botelho Furtado. And the other is
Andre Costa Furtado who married twice: once to Catarina Oliveira and
the other to Catarina Matos (Costa)

I can't recall which is yours (CRS), so forgive me and indulge me with

[AZORES-Genealogy] Joao Goncalves Santana Maria Rodrigues

2010-06-06 Thread Rosemarie Capodicci
Dear Group,

According to the NEPS site there is a Joao Goncalves Santana married to Maria
Rodrigues in 27 May 1630, Sao Roque do Pico. They are listed with 9 children
one of which is a Jose b 1650. I have a Jose Ferreira married to Goncalves in
Santa Cruz Graciosa on 11 Dec 1673 listing his parents as Joao Goncalves and
Maria Rodrigues of Pico (no town). Since I can't seem to find any other couple
in the right timeframe that even comes close to this couple I'm thinking it
might be my Jose's parents. Is anyone connected to this line?
Joao Maria's children according to NEPS site:
Cosme? 1631

Bartolomeu Vieira b 1635

Sebastiao? b 1637

Jose? b 1650

Filipa? b 1653

Joao Goncalves Santa Ana Junior

Ana Bras b 1640

Manuel? b 1644

Antonio Vieira de Santa Ana

Thanks for any help, Rosemarie

Yes George, I believe Shirley looked in all three parishes. I have
Manuel de Paiva married to Maria Moniz Pimentel, same period and it is
missing also. I think there are at least 6 marriages missing in Ponta
Garca. You can track them by baptisms, and then look for marriages and
they are not there. I think Shirley and Cheri also have a Manuel
Furtado missing, this one from Vila Franca marriage. I noticed that RR
and Canto made references to records that longer exist. They probably
crumbled or washed out.

Ah, but for some interesting news and a twist on Mr Andre Costa
Furtado. I believe he only married twice. But this is not due to you
memory, rather it is because his records are intricately bound up with
another Andre Furtado (Sousa) of Ponta Garca, and it is indeed very
difficult to determine which is which. One is Andre Furtado Sousa who
was married to Escolastica Medeiros and whose marriage record is
missing. I figure there is a page or two missing from the Ponta Garca
records somewhere between 1748 and 1751 . I believe he was the son of
Manuel Sousa Furtado and Maria Botelho Furtado.  And the other is
Andre Costa Furtado who married twice: once to Catarina Oliveira and
the other to Catarina Matos (Costa)

I can't recall which is yours (CRS), so forgive me and indulge me with
  your memory!

Andre married Catarina de Matos, Dec. 14, 1725

however, during our sharing of information, I learned that both of Bob's

Re: [AZORES-Genealogy] Re: Ponta Garca Gang

2010-06-06 Thread celeste perry
OK, John, here is what I have.

Jose, son of Andre Furtado Catarina de Oliviera, both from Sao Pedro, VFdoC,
was born on 3 Jan. 1746 baptized on the 9th... (translation by Joao Ventura)
Jose is the ancestor of my husband, Bob's, maternal grandfather, JACINTHO do
CANTO SILVA, born 1869 in Ponta Garca, Sao Miguel.

Maria, daughter of Andre Furtado de Sousa his wife, Escolastica de Medeiros,
both from Ponta Garca, was born on 29, Oct. 1759 and was baptised on 4 Nov., in
Ponta Garca.  ( translated by Joao Ventura)  Maria is the ancestor of my
husband, Bob's, maternal grandmother, MARIA PAIXAO da COSTA, born 1888, in
Lagoa, Sao Miguel.

I have Andre Costa Furtado's parents as MANUEL FURTADO de SOUSA MARIA
BOTELHO.  This from Shirley.

Celeste, Hayward, CA

John, as I was trying to go through my doccuments, I remember the difficulty I
had trying to make sense of this family.  I think I stopped trying when I
realized 3 marriages and 16 kids probably meant I had it mixed up.  Shirley
sent me a lot of the peripheral line (siblings) and, at the time, it seemed to
fit.

If anyone of the Ponta Garca Gang can figure it out, I would appreciate hearing
what you find.

[AZORES-Genealogy] Flores Genealogy and Drinking Society

2010-06-06 Thread John Vasconcelos
I've become envious of the Ponta Garca Gang and the Cabral Travassos
Country Club and their good fortune in finding cousins. So I hereby
establish the Flores Genealogy and Drinking Society. We Flores people are
not so fortunate as our more easterly cousins. Flores was subject to the
plunderings of Pirates and Privateers which took a toll on our ancestors and
their institutions. According to historical accounts, Flores was attacked by
Privateers in the mid 1600's who burned every church on the Island. As a
result most records before the late 1600's were lost. Even the records on
neighboring Corvo go back earlier, to the early 1600's, as I recall.

The earliest documented marriage that I have discovered among my ancestors
was that of Manoel Pimentel to Isabel de Freitas, Nov 26, 1692, Santa Cruz,
Flores who were my 4G Grandparents (He had been married previously, in the
1680's as I recall). His parents were Domingos Nunes and Marianna Fraga,
date and place of birth unknown although it was probably Santa Cruz, Flores.
I would venture a guess that Marianna was related to Diogo das Chagas, whose
mother was also a Fraga. Her parents were Domingos Fernandez and Catarina de
Freitas.

How about it, any cousins out there with these same ancestors?
John Vasconcelos
