Sao Roque on which island?  Some people may say Sao Roque referring to the
church (there's one on Sao Miguel and Terceria) or to the freguesia of Sao
 Roque (on Pico).

If it's Sao Roque the church in Rosto de Cao on S.Miguel, records leaving
the port of Ponta Delgada on Sao Miguel don't exist.
If it's Sao Roque the church in Altares, records leaving the port of Angra
on the island of Terceira do exist, but they are not online.  You will need
someone to do a look up for you.
If it's Sao Roque the church AND freguesia on Pico, they might have left the
port of Horta on Faial.  They are not online and I'm not sure if they go
back to the 1850s.  If they do, you will need someone to do a lookup for
 you.

It's 1:45 pm PDT and I'm on a PC and I accessed the site with Mozilla's
Firefox.  The PC has Java updated and FoxIt (instead of Adobe Reader), as well
as Flash, and all are up to date.  I'm on broadband, on a cable modem.  I can
see the book.

What I did:
1) http://www.hathitrust.org/
2) In the CATALOG box, I typed in familia faialenses without quotes or
diacritics.  Hit the Find button.
3) In the next window, it comes up.  I clicked on Full View and it opened.

[AZORES-Genealogy] Re: Vieira Anselmo, Ribeira Grande area, Sao Miguel island

2011-03-23 Thread Deb
HI,

My family are also from Sao Miguel, Ribeira Grande area. I can't find
any information on them so far, except they left in 1895 from Ponta
Delgada, on the SS Braunfels Jacintho Rapozo, and Maria Augusta with
one daughter Mary. What I want to know is the town they were really
from and where they were born, who are their parents. I can't find
that information. It would be so great to learn more.

2011-03-23 Thread Debra Wolgemuth

Bob,

I grew up in Merced, CA and my great grandparents immigrated from the Azores.
I was fortunate to have known them and they lived into my high school years.
Francisco Jorge arrived in Boston, MA and traveled by train to Merced, CA in
the late 1800's. Leopoldina Freitas arrived through NYC (Ellis Island) twenty
years later as Francisco sent for her. He traveled with her and a traveling
companion by train from NYC to Merced, CA.

Merced has railroad passenger service through the Santa Fe Railroad. The route
stops in Bakersfield to the south and does not continue to Los Angeles. The
route does continue north to Martinez, CA and connects with railroads that went
through major midwest cities (Chicago) and eventually to the East. Our
relatives took this northern route

Bob,

By point A to point B you are asking how he got from Providence, RI to Merced,
CA? Probably train. I don't think train (choo choo train) manifests exist.
And the migration was within the country, not people from outside the country.
The government keeps track of the outsiders from other countries. I know of a
few Mormon wagon trail lists that exist, but 1920 was probably too late for the
wagon.

Book 4 of Saudades Da Terra was translated by Edna Phillips kern and
published in 2001. I purchased a copy from her and had this email and
address for her in the cover of the book nerka...@aol.com, 12760 Perris Blvd
A-8, Moreno Valley, CA 92553-2339. I think I paid around $35.

I am not sure if any CD copies are authorized as the book was published in
paper cover. I would be careful of distributing any burned copies of a CD.
I think translating this would be considered a intellectual work and thus
protected under copyright laws. Even if not how would you feel if someone
took the genealogy work you did and distributed it freely?

Yes, one that I know of, but the only way to get a copy is a used copy. I
can't remember her name, but she translated Livro Quarto of Das Saudades da
Terra by Gaspar Frutuoso. It's about the leading families in the early days
of the Azores. Mostly Sao Miguel and Santa Maria...little on the other
islands. Frutuoso, I believed died in the late 1500's. I know several
people on the list have the book. I gave my copy to the Family History
Library in Oakland.

2011-03-23 Thread cmurray56
Hi Maria, I cant thankyou enough for your reply. Its so great to
finaly find some details of the arrival of Portuguse people to
Australia. Francisco J Muniz was a store keeper and miner at
Smythesdale and i do know of members of the Muniz family buried at
Creswick. I do know that Francisco had shares in a gold mine. I do
know that Manuel Carreiro Muniz died in Creswick in 1882, his wife was
Louisa Sims. In April there is a gathering of Pioneer family
desendants at Smythesdale Botanical Gardens, it is to celebrate 150
years since families arrived and settled into the area. I hope to meet
up with people that may be related. I do know that there is a living
Muiz in the area who is a member of the historical society that will
be there on the day. I would like to contact you by email to compare
notes. Thankyou so much, Best Wishes
Chris
