No, the only ones online are the ones you see for Ponta Delgada, Sao Miguel
island. It is the intent of the CCA to put the other 2 ports online

[AZORES-Genealogy] Re: Portuguese 'JOE early pioneer

2011-05-12 Thread mlopesdazevedopaim
Re Portuguese Joe (of Vancouver, British Columbia)

Hi Lionel,
wonderful to see your message. i never did thank you for introducing
me to your son Doug. when i moved to vancouver canada in 1990 i
decided to conduct some historical walking tours. while in the
archives i kept running into references to a portuguese joe. (there
were others too). eventually i hired doug and with some flimsy
information he was able to ferret out what i believe is pj's birth
certificate which i am enclosing below. i am not sure professor jean
barman, the author of the best selling book about pj, agrees with me
as there are descrepancies in dates (arent there always, especially
for second marriages certificates! i believe joe recorded his age as
37 when he married his second aboriginal wife, she was 14. i believe
pj was actually in his early 40s1!).
to make a long story short, i wrote several stories about
portuguese pioneers on canada's west coast (the focus is on the east
coast) in Lusitania.ca; a bilingual zine we started up about 7 or 8
years ago and the story came to the attention of Bill Moniz, and old
friend from Toronto, Tv personality turned filmaker. He took on the
project for OMNI tv and produced a portuguese and english version. it
is also shown on rtpi.
i am convinced that a number of portuguese pioneers on the west
coast came up from san francisco for the 1858 Fraser river gold rush.
they usually married aboriginal women and fathered many children.
today there are annual Silvey reunions (not to be confused with John
Silva who settled on Gabriola island off Nanaimo and had a fruit and
vegetable store in Victoria around 1860).
There is a Joe Silvey, river boat captain listed in an 1850 San
Francisco directory. Also Gregory Fernandez, the first coffee roaster
in British Columbia, tried and acquitted of attempted murder by BC's
first judge, Judge Begby, ran a store in Gastown, the forerunner to
Vancouver in 1862. In 1858 he is listed in the San Francisco directory
as a fruit and vegetable dealer. He was from Madeira. His 17 yr. old
nephew, Joe Gonçalves came to look after his uncle in 1874 (the only
pioneer who does not appear to have married), and todays Madeira Park
on the sunshine coast north of Vancouver is named after him.
I also believe that Joe Silvey had brothers in california and the
New Bedford but i have not been able to track them down.
ps, there are other Portuguese Joe pioneers, and the epithet continues
to this day, Portuguese Joe's cafe on Commercial drive in Vancouver is
a cultural icon as is Portuguese Joe's fish store just outside Comox
on vancouver island!

2011-05-12 Thread Cheri Mello
Suzanne,

I don't research Sao Jorge and I'd have to look at a map. The nearest port
to Sao Jorge is either Horta on Faial island or Angra on the island of
Terceira. If the emigrant was going to HI, they had to leave out of Ponta
Delgada on Sao Miguel, no matter which island they were originally from. If
an emigrant needed to get there by a certain time, they could have gone on
the next boat, so that could be any of the 3 ports. It seems like the vast
majority left from their home port though.

Cheri and Shervoy,

You are most likely correct, Frank did come over on a whaler. You might try
the Whaling Museum in New Bedford next time you are in the area. To try and
research Faial records looking for a Francis/Francisco b. abt. 1840 with
parents Joseph Francis and Antonia but without a parish is like looking for
a needle in a haystack. Best bet - someone who has already researched this
family. I will keep looking though to see if I can find a ship's manifest.
I found one I was recently looking for in 1860's.

Moses Howe, clergyman, New Bedford was already 80 years old in 1870 census,
so he was 85 when they married. He had been a clergyman at Seaman's Bethel
1843-1858.

Re: [AZORES-Genealogy] Re: Williams from Faial

2011-05-12 Thread E Sharp
I thought this is him but it says he was from US??? There is more than 1
Frank Williams in the area and I think, of these, one was a mariner and one
was a farmer and one settled in Wellfleet (mariner) and one in Lakeville
(farmer). Since several used the Williams surname could their surname have
been Wilhelm (I think Portuguese for William??? or some such variation???)

Frank Williams, 30, mariner, bark Evarista, sailing from Fayal, arriving
Boston July 5, 1866.

There is another, Frank Williams, 28, mariner, who I think is same as above
sailing from Fayal on Barque Azor Oct. 1862 and it also listed from US.

I also found these Frank Williams:

Frank Williams, 33, sailing from Flores, Azores, farmer, arriving Boston
Aug. 27, 1870 aboard the brig Oriana.

Frank Williams, 30, laborer, sailing from Sao Miguel (St. Michael) arriving
Boston July 14, 1873 on bark Armizade.

PS: I also found Frank and Mary Ann living in Lakeville in the 1880 census.

E

I know ages don't quite match but we all know how these can fluctuate.

Shervoy is on the list. But the postings from this person have 2 Re: in
them, so it breaks the thread. They get caught in the queue so I need to
repost them. It's always best to leave the subject alone, just hit reply,
and type away.

From Shervoy:
I looked at the Whaling Museum's site, and he was not listed among the crews
of the 3 trips the Kate Cory made to Faial. Therefore, I suspect that he
signed onto a different ship in Faial, and somewhere along the line, signed
onto the Kate Cory. He was on that ship when it was confiscated by the U.S.
Navy during the Civil War, and it was burned by the Confederate ship The
Alabama. The seamen were put ashore on the coast of Brazil.
