Re: [AZORES-Genealogy] marraige records
Dear Gail, No need for the cemetery to charge you. There is a website that I take pictures for of grave sites. It is called www.findagrave.com. Look up the cemetery or the person's name to see if it has already been done. If not there is a place to send a request. I have my ancestors in a virtual cemetery on the site. I manage others I have recorded and when the family finds it I give it to them. [AZORES-Genealogy] A Great Find!!
Dear Listers, Just to let you know that you have to keep searching everywhere all the time! Yesterday Celeste Perry and I traveled to the Roman Catholic Archives in Menlo Park, CA to look at marriage records. I have been searching for my grandmother's sister Maria Vieira da Silva for years. I have her passport, her ship list (arrived June 1912) and I knew that she was married and gone from California before my grandmom arrived sometime in 1914. I also wanted to find the marriaage of their sister Adriana who married Joseph Davis nee Teves. Adriana Joseph's granddaughters are also tracing Joseph's family but don't know much. So, Celeste and I decided that Christmas or no we were finally making it to the Archives this year!! I not only found Adriana's marriage to Joseph Teves, Jun 1913 but also Maria's!! All of my Aunties said she married a Machado (they were SURE of that) and his name was either Frank or Joao! The marriage record Aug of 1914 in St. Joseph's Portuguese Church in Oakland, says his name (in latin of course!) is Joammomi which I hope is Joao/John)Machado Avila! It also says he is from the Norte Grande Sao George which records their records in the same church as my Maria, TO Maria Vieira Silva. It gives the parent's names so I know it's my Maria. Marie moved back east right after her marriage, had 3 children and died of a brain tumor sometime in the 1920's. Our family has completely lost touch with her family. Does this story sound familier to anyone?? Anyway, I just wanted to let everyone know that I received my early Christmas present and to give you all hope in your searching! Many thanks to Celeste for all of her help (and wonderful cookies!) she just kept proding me to go and search. Hi Rosemarie, I have been interested in going to the Roman Catholic Archives in Menlo Park, too. How much info did you have to give them to get your records? I know my great grandparents were in California in the 1880's and I believe they had three children while there, at least one of them in Mission San Jose. I know the exact date of birth on one of the children from a US passport I found. It would be nice to find baptisms on him and the other two siblings. Re: [AZORES-Genealogy] A Great Find!!
Tish, The Archives are for the Archdioses (sp??) of San Francisco. I beleive if your people had a child in Mission San Jose that is where you would need to search first. BUT, if San Jose and area were in the San Fran diocese early on, 1880 migh fit, you would just have to tell Mr. Burns at the Archive what church and the years you want to search. There is a microfilm reader but NO way to copy anything. I tried taking digital pics but it really didn't work out well so you have to hand copy everything. The Mission San Jose record have been microfilmed by the LDS (Mormom) Church for that time period I think. Go to Familysearch.org and do a place search for San Jose, churches and see if the mission records are there for that time period. If not you can access the Hunting Beach site for earlier Mission records. I don't have the addy but I think if you google Huntington Beach Mission Record Project it will come up. [AZORES-Genealogy] Re: Conferece in San Jose, CA
I contacted one of the organizers, who sent me the following information re the conference. Note that João Ventura's workshops will be on Saturday, March 24 -- although some of the other days' events might also be of interest to some of you. I'm sure more info will be forthcoming re lodgings, as well as any fees (I'm guessing for the dinners). As I live Back East, I'm not sure yet whether I'll be able to attend, but I hope there will in any event be a great turnout from among our group. Note that The program of the conference is being developed in partnership with various community organizations. Any group that wishes to collaborate and participate in the event is welcome. And that one should contact Bela Ferreira-Gonçalves, Administrative Director, LAEF (educat...@luso-american.org or by phone 925-828-3883.) Perhaps some who are certain they'll be attending could avail themselves of this opportunity to piggy-back onto João's presentation. So these 2 little girls could not have known their big brother. I'd wait for the death certificates to come to see if it sheds any light on your problem. Depending on when Joe died, that death certificate may state the years of his marriage. It it was 30 years, then you can subtract 30 and get the approximate year of his marriage. Re: [AZORES-Genealogy] A Great Find!!
It wasn't the prodding, Rosemarie; It was the positive mind-set. Remember, I kept telling you to say and think, I have found Maria. Everytime you said anything negative, I said, You found it. Not, You are finding it, or you will find it. I tried to keep you in a positive frame of mind. Some may think this is crazy; however, I have had too many experiences where I feel I will never reach the conclusion I seek. A positive affirmation (in the present tense) has worked for me every time. It was great to see Rosemarie's face light up and have her (almost) do the victory dance. Dear Listers, Our fun group will again assemble for this event. Celeste has again offered to make purple scarfs for us (for both males and females). For those of you who attended the group event a couple of years ago, you will remember we were stopped by everyone at the conference asking the significance of the scarfs. When we told them we represented the Azores they were surprised there were so many of us and loved the idea. So, when/if you think you will attending and would like to join us, please let me know at my PERSONAL email address (so as not to overwhelm the list) so Celeste can make a scarf for you also. We will meet as a group somewhere along the line. Many of us will probably attend only Saturday when Joao will be offering his presentations, currently he is hoping to have a beginners and an advanced presentation. They usually offer a lunch and a dinner later and we maybe we can be together for one or both of these. E -- To unsubscribe from this group, send email to azores+unsubscr...@googlegroups.com.
