Veronica,

I did a cut and paste of the two pages (T718, T719)in the book which deal with
your grandmother's brothers. I've also enclosed the title page of the book for
your reference. The document is attached.

Also, if I could ask a favor in return. Would you mind giving me info on your
grandmother (down to you if you are comfortable with that) so that I may add an
addendum to the book ? I like to keep track of the MV families and who I've
spoken with concerning them. If you're unsure if I'm a trustworthy person, ask
Cheri. We've known one another for nearly 20 years. I'm a teacher and have been
one for nearly 40 years, so I value research and will respect anything you ask
to remain confidential. E-mail me privately if you wish.

Regardless, I hope this info helps you with your research. Take care,

Veronica,

It says:
Frank Terra, b 12 Jan 1875
Joseph I. Terra, b 1876
Manuel Ignacia Terra, b 1884

It goes on to say: Frank married Mary _. They had a daughter Rose M. Terra,
b 26 May 1918 in Oak Bluffs. She married Joseph Swartz Figueirado, Jr.

For Joseph, it gives his birthplace as Fayal. He
married Marie Corey on 25Nov 1903 in Edgartown. She was born in 1884. He died
on 8 Jan 1920.
They had two daughters, Maria and Hilda.

Manuel is also listed as being born on Fayal. He married Anna T. Bettencourt.
They had three daughters: Mary, Sophia and Rosa.

Sorry, I left off some dates (typing on my Smartphone can be a pain.) Are these
the people you want ?

I can fill in more pieces if they are.

There is a Joseph Silva, son of Manuel Silva and Mary Clara Francis, born 3
March 1874 in Edgartown, MA. It says he was a twin of Manuel Sylva. He married
Virgínia Silva. They had children: Clara Janet, Elmer Howard, Robert Joseph,

 shortage of jobs there?

Hi Frannie,

Robert Santos at Cal State Stanislaus has written about this:
http://library.csustan.edu/bsantos/migrat.html

And here is a link to an online version of a book written in 1886
called The Azores: or Western Islands: a political, commercial, and
geographical account. You can read it online or download the PDF:
http://archive.org/details/azoresorwesterni00walk

It doesn't seem to say anything specific about emigration to Hawaii,
but here are few standout quotes:

These oft recurring failures of the crops are aggravated by the whole
land being held and owned by the rich to the utter exclusion of the
labourer, who, unable to rise above his even precarious lOd. a day
wage, is condemned to a lifetime of ill-paid labour, and when the
maize crops, their staple article of food, fail, and grain has to be
imported at high prices, the labourer and his numerous progeny have a
bad time of it here.

Emigration, generally clandestine, has of late years greatly relieved
the necessitous condition of these poor islanders, but the
difficulties in the way of the overplus population seeking their
fortunes elsewhere hare been increased by a law passed in the Cortes
in 1880, compelling all males, on attaining the age of 14, to deposit
£40 with the State, before being allowed to leave the country ; this
sum being kept in pawn with a view to providing a military substitute,
should the emigrant not return when required to undergo the period of
service in the army all Portuguese are liable to.

The total annual emigration from this archipelago fluctuates between
two and three thousand of both sexes, but is continuous. Besides the
English, German and Portuguese steamers which occasionally call at
these islands for their living freights, there are three or four
sailing vessels employed between them and Boston and New Bedford,
U.S., carrying each about 170 passengers, and making five or six
voyages in the year.

Notwithstanding this constant flux of emigration, the population of
the island would seem to be on the increase, for the census of 1864
showed that the number of inhabitants amounted to 106,000, whereas in
the last census of 1878 they had increased to 120,000 approximately,
distributed between thirty-five towns and villages.

Best,
Steve

[AZORES-Genealogy] Re: Need help with record

2012-03-26 Thread Dano
I didn't see anything to indicate where the parents were from, but, early
records left out a lot of things we take for granted. What would be the
main concern for the church would be whether the parties to the event were
Catholic, had received the sacraments, and, in the case of marriages, that
they were not currently married to another person. If birthplaces aren't
mentioned it is because, in all probability, all participants were known to
be members of the parish where the event was being celebrated.

 Than you Dano,

Thanks for the links apparently, the Azores also had sugar cane
 plantations as well.

I wish in spirit I could reach out to my ancestors and thank them for
their courage and coming here to Hawaii.

Is there a way for me to connect with the Silva Sampaio family in Rabo de
 Piexe? Any advice ?

Melody Lassalle wrote a very good article article on the migrations you
might want to read. It may not answer all of your questions but it does
cover the decision to leave home for a new land, and what conditions your
ancestors faced both at home and on the voyage to their new home. The
article is in two parts (reasons, and, risks), so, click on both links for
 the entire article...

shortage of jobs there? And what kind of jobs were available for the woman

Any help on this would be greatly appreciathttp://

Thank you as all information helps me understand better. I came across
this article, and it did mention how young boys were taken into the military
and of the overpopulation and blight of crops, etc.

Tenant farmers - the difficulties must have been enormous. Does anyone know
what crops were grown? Did the tenant farmers have any rights? Some
protection from being evicted?
