[AZORES-Genealogy] Picoenses in the diaspora

2013-01-25 Thread pico
Picoenses = people from PicoI was doing research today in Rosário, Lagoa, São Miguel Island, on the Costa Venáncio family and while researching baptisms I was rewarded with the nice find of a person from Piedade, Pico Island. There was another from São Pedro, Angra, Terceira Island in those records. These are little pieces to the massive puzzle I keep working on and so I am always pleased to find them.It reminds me of how often people moved around between islands. It would not surprise me to find just about any family in anyone's family tree to find one or more had moved away to another island. It is a sure bet to find them in the larger locations like Ponta Delgada, Horta and Angra.Sometimes I enjoy picking any village and search through the death records from 1911 and earlier to find more people who were born in Pico or Terceira. This Costa Venáncio family had moved to the island of São Jorge, and descendants now live in the USA. Will I find they had moved from the continent before living in São Miguel? Who knowsDoug da Rocha HolmesSacramento, CaliforniaPico & Terceira Genealogist916-550-1618www.dholmes.com

Hi Karen, If your heritage is Silva from Graciosa, we are probably
cousins! It is a very small island.

[AZORES-Genealogy] Re: Azores trip

2013-01-25 Thread Isabella Baltar
Lorraine,

I'm leaving to Portugal and Azores in two weeks. I will stay in Terceira
for one month; João Ventura is helping me with my stay and car. I want to
drive so I will feel free to visit whatever I want, and stay at those
places as much as I can to do my research, take photos and write a journal.
As Celeste Perry has said previously, João Ventura is very reliable.

I think travelling to Azores by boat is not worth, its too far way, almost
1000 miles/1500 km from the mainland. Sata is the best from US (west or
east coast - I'm on east coast). Unless you want to experience how people
were used to go back and fourth from there. I have atravel agent in
Terceira who planned all my flights. She manages to find the best dates and
deals. If you want her contact I can give to you. I use skype to talk to
her.

Last, but not the least, there is a website where you can search for local
places to stay; they are private homes or rooms for rent all over the
world, and as well as in Azores. Lots of reviews from each place.

airbnb.com

If you want any additional information while I'm there or when I come back,
feel free to contact me.

RE: [AZORES-Genealogy] Azores trip

2013-01-25 Thread nancy jean baptiste

We've taken the boat from Sao Miguel and Terceira several times and have had no
problems with sea sickness. We enjoy watching the coastlines and being among
the local people. Ferry travel between islands is great fun for people who
aren't prone to sea sickness. It's also significantly cheaper especially with
inter island baggage fees for flying although I think the overage charges have
been discontinued since we didn't have to pay any last year.

When we went to the islands back in 1999 and 2001 the boats were not available
in the early part of May. That may have changed. We flew from Lisboa to Sao
Miguel to Terceira to Sao Jorge back to Terceira to Lisboa.

Do not travel the Azores by boat without a good supply of seasickness meds.
The boats are designed for cargo, not for people. They rock and roll
excessively.
I took Dramamine before a 4 hour trip. I had given the rest of the pills away
before we were even out of the harbor! The crew was very solicitous and passed
out sick bags and promptly collected the used ones which they threw overboard.

The bags were blue. We called the trip the Blue Bag Special.

[AZORES-Genealogy] SATA airlines

2013-01-25 Thread "E" Sharp
Those of you planning a trip to the Azores might want to watch the SATA
specials. Sorry, they just had this one Boston to Ponta
Delgada...unfortunately, you had to book by January 15 . but if you
could have travelled within the dates specified it was a great deal. I
believe that $499 fare included everything. Might want to keep you eyes
open to see if another special might pop up.

"SATA airline has launched a deal with airfare from $499 per person from
Boston to Ponta Delgada. Book by January 15, 2013 for travel between March
21 and April 18, 2013."

California is far for me too. I'd attend also if it was closer. I WISH
there were some kind of workshops here in Canada focusing on the Azores
too! Anything I found has been mostly about British and Irish researching.
