first Mary died as an infant. There were 7 not six children. My grandmother
was named after her older sister who died as an infant. Was your grandfather
William he died in 1918. I believe the other brother, john, was left with
medical problems as a result of the 1918 epidemic. I am the daughter of
Florence Phillipa. I lived with my grandparents and spent a lot of time with my
grandmothers relatives. The great grandparents and other relatives are buried

[AZORES-Genealogy] Residencials in Vila Franca on Sao Miguel

2013-02-09 Thread Cheri Mello
Repost for Marie Shantz:

I will be going to the Sao Miguel, Azores, hopefully, within the week.
I have stayed at Convento de Francisco which has become very
expensive. I am planning to stay a couple of weeks. I will fly into
Lajas, Teiceira and then fly or boat to Sao Miguel. More than likely
fly. The weather can/usually is rough this time of the year.

Does anyone on the list know of residentials in the area of Vila
Franca do Compo to stay at and the phone numbers; residentials or
pensions.

I am planning on doing research and ‘sightseeing’ this island. I have
been there twice.

Cheri, I have not forgot you reference the DNA.

 Ginny,

Arthur died on 12 Oct 1896 in Gloucester. His birth information with Manuel
 P. Madruga and Phillipa Perry is consistent with the names of the parents
of Willie P , Gertrude, and Manuel . You didn't mention Cecilia.

According to the 1910 census Phillipa was the a widowed head of household in
1910. Arthur's record is important because it's the only one that states
 Pico as the origin.

Depends on what date, if it towards end of June, my recommendation would be
to buy. If it is towards the beginning or middle of the month, then you
can wait.

Due to the power outages in Fall River, I don't have access to my system,
but you can send me an email to my gmail account (edwardmel...@gmail.com).
let me know the dates, and I can give you a better opinion of the

Subject: [AZORES-Genealogy] Residencials in Vila Franca on Sao Miguel
 From: gfsche...@gmail.com
 To: azores@googlegroups.com

No, I don't have a Nora in my tree...at least not that I know of. The document
does not necessarily relate to my father directly...it just relates to someone
in his family tree.

Re: [AZORES-Genealogy] Island of my dreams

2013-02-09 Thread Katharine
My Portuguese professor told me that Portuguese derives in goodly measure
from Old Provençal (it migrated from southern France). Additionally,
Portuguese strongly resembles Old Galician, a language from the
northwestern corner of Spain adjacent to northern mainland Portugal.

I find, after studied Portuguese, that Spanish sounds a bit to my ear like
a simplified/clarified form of Portuguese.

The all-star baseball player/manager Davey Lopes, of half Cape Verdean
ancestry through his father's side, pronounces his surname the Anglicized
way, in one syllable lopes, rather than LOPE-ish like in European
Portuguese or LOPE-eez like in Brazilian Portuguese.

Re: [AZORES-Genealogy] Searching Madruga, Cardoza - Azores

2013-02-09 Thread riverview
Eleanor,
I am so happy and excited to hear from you. I have lots of questions.
Edgar advised me of the infant Arthur Perry Madruga, born December 11,1894 and
died October 12, 1896.
I am not aware of an infant girl or her death - that would make eight children.
I will check the city archives and search for the older sister? You said your
mother was named after her older sister who died as an infant. Manuel Madruga's
mother was Mary P. Joseph (Madruga). Do you think your mother was Possibly
named after her. I need to check for her death record as well. She is listed in
the census as a bookkeeper - I believe she ran the grocery store.
To further complicate my search, Edgar has sent me a number of genweb pages
where the dates seem to be those of our ggrandfather and gggrandfather.
However, on closer examination the Manuel Madruga born Pico 1819 married Maria
Josefa Piedade - still sounds correct - died May 10, 1909 Pico. Our Maria P.
Joseph - Mrs. Manuel Madruga - our gggrandmother lived in Gloucester, is
reported in the census as the bookkeeper.
It was John Perry Madruga, my grandfather who died in the 1918 epedemic. I'm
not sure of the time of Williams death but he was born September 1890. I
believe he died of epilepsy.

Do you have any pictures of any of the Madruga's?

Your grandmothers brother Manuel married Jennie __, they had a son Robert who
married Gloria Swinson. They lived in Manchester, MA. I am married to Gloria's
youngest brother Harold Swinson.

I have many family connections and stories to share with you.
If you would, please share your personal email with me so that we may continue
to communicate.

Although most insane asylums housed the mentally ill, some also took in

The poor house system was used by the poor for housing and sometimes
