[AZORES-Genealogy] naturalization

2013-12-13 Thread Mike
I found on ancestry a naturalization record, looks like an index card on a
roll-a-dex for my GGgrandfather Antonio Silveira Pereira for Sept 5th,
1901, this date matches exactly what he told in a news paper article about
him. It also falls in line with with a passenger list record him, his wife
and my great grandmother, for them returning from the Azores May 17th,
1902, on the ship Peninsular for a trip he mentions in the news paper
article as well.
Everything I have though says he lived in and around the New Bedford,
Dartmouth, and Fairhaven area, but the Naturalization shows him becoming a
citizen in Providence, RI.

My question is, since I can't find any record of his naturalization in
Mass, for that time, would he have to take a trip to Providence for
naturalization in 1901?

2013-12-13 Thread Richard Francis Pimentel
It would not surprise me that he could have went to Providence, It is not
that far away. The records for Massachusetts naturalizations prior to post
WW II are in the Massachusetts Archives in Boston (near JFK Libaray). Tauton
District Court was the county court house where I would think the
naturalization would most likely have taken place.

They have, but only available to view at a local LDS. Some contract thing.
I would have to order it from them to the local LDS to view.

I understand that because he was married here in the states that his wife
would automaticaly be naturalized as well. If I can ever get the record

Hi Mike,One idea that might be new to  you is to check for him as a passenger to the USA after the date he became a citizen. The reason is that for returning USA citizens it says where and when they were naturalized. So the question becomes whether or not he ever did return to his native island for any reason.Doug da Rocha HolmesSacramento, CaliforniaPico & Terceira Genealogist916-550-1618www.dholmes.com

[AZORES-Genealogy] Never heard from

Let me write this in the forum and see if anyone of his family ( if he had
one ) sees it and might have been looking for his roots

I had a great uncle named José Rodrigues Roque ( same name as father
) mother was Maria da Conceiçao

He was born in S. Roque, S. Miguel on February 2, 1898

Around 1915 at age 17 he disappeared and family never was heard from him

In Ancestry I find nothing under that name

[AZORES-Genealogy] Re: European Portuguese?

2013-12-13 Thread Steve Peters
I don't know if anyone else here is in the Seattle area, but I have been
studying privately with a woman from mainland Portugal (Algarve) for the
past six months. She's a good teacher, a very nice person, and her fee is
quite reasonable. If anyone is interested, please write to me off list and
I'll be happy to pass her contact info along.

I know it is very hard to find learning resources that are not geared
towards Brazilian Portuguese. I did quite a search for a good dictionary
and finally settled on the Collins concise, which is mostly Brazilian but
does include alternate words for European Portuguese.

Re: [AZORES-Genealogy] naturalization

2013-12-13 Thread celeste perry
Mike,
If being naturalized on the east coast of the US was the same as here in
California, I will tell you what I found in my search for my son-in-law's
great-grandfather's naturalization.
I began to look in Alameda County for his naturalization since he lived in
Oakland (Alameda County) and had a plumbing business in Oakland.  After
spending a summer going through the hard copies of the records in Alameda
County, I did not find anything close to the name he used here, Frank Enos
Sousa.  I began to look for the voter registration records for 1890; however,
found that they had been destroyed at an earlier time.
When I had a lead that the voter registration records might be available, I
needed the to know the township in which he lived, I went to the voter
registration office and asked for the township in which his home address was
listed.  I was told that changed for each election.
As I have written before, someone in the office led me to the "Erickson
collection" and to the archive where the actual forms filled out by the voter
were kept up to 1920.  I found his registration forms and one of them stated
that he was naturalized in San Francisco and another that he was born in
Flores, Azores!
To this day I do not understand why someone who lived in Oakland, before the
Bay Bridge was built, would have gone to San Francisco to be naturalized.  It
was a long trip around the bay and I was told you could be naturalized in ANY
court, even a traffic court!
So, don't give up, keep looking in all the places you think may be dead
ends, sometimes our ancestors are probably laughing at us as we spin our wheels
looking for information.

2013-12-13 Thread Karen Huffman
Jose I know we've communicated before but I really believe somewhere in our
lines we connect. My great grandfather was Antonio Rodriguez Roque. He had
16 kids with Amelia Ernistina Cabral. All the kids were born in Sao Roque
or Sao Pedro. One of them was Jose Rodriguez Roque born 11 Dec 1897. My
great great grandfather was Jose Rodriguez Roque born 1831. He was married
to Francisca Candida. My great grandmother's father was Antonio deMedeiros
Cabral. Too many coincidences.

If any of those names are familiar to anyone, I'd love to expand my family!
Anybody?

(I'll start a new thread later)

yes he did go back home 23 days after being naturalized, and himself,
Antone S. Perry,(Antonio Silveira Pereira), wife Mary Perry(Maria Leal da

names all changed to perry I'm assuming after naturalization. They all
returned May 17th, 1902 in NY aboard the ship Peninsular. So if I know when

that might pinpoint where he was from to hopefully figuring out if the man

Subject: [AZORES-Genealogy] Help tracking down Immigration and Baptismal Record
for John Perry - Sao Miguel

I am trying to track down the immigration/ship passenger record for a relative
John Perry. From everything I found, he was most likely from the Ponta Delgada
area of Sao Miguel, and his birthday dates ranges from December 1875 to 1879
based on various records (census, WWI draft register, petitition for
naturalization), but it could be different years. His petition for
naturalization record in Sacramento only states when he came from Hawaii to
California, but not when he came from Azores to Hawaii. The census records say
state he immigrated sometime around 1895. One ship came in 4 April 1895 - The
S.S. Braunfels.
One baptismal record of his first child Maria states his name as Joao Damos
Pareira. I searched the Index to Portugal Manifests on the Hawaii Archives
website and found a likely match - Joao Pereira Damaso who arrived on the S.S.
Braunfels in 1895.
http://archives1.dags.hawaii.gov/gsdl/collect/indextop/index/assoc/HASHeb18/98cce7a3.dir/doc.pdf

It does not state is age but only he was from Delgada. I tried to look up the
record on the handwritten ship passenger manifests from the Portuguese
Consulate - It is microfilmed and available at the Family History Library
#1017125, but I could not find an entry of a Joao Pereira Damaso for some
reason on that ship. Maybe I missed it. The typed index card where I found his
name has #257, sheet 6 written on it. From what I can tell, this does not
correlate with the hand written numbers on the ship passenger lists. Does
anyone know what the original source info for the index cards is?
Also, I am not sure on the names of his parents. The California Death Record
Index lists his father's last name as Camara and mother's last name as Joseph.
I have heard the family name of Camara from other cousins but it has never been
confirmed how the Camara (or Pereira Camara) name is connected. He always went
by John Perry.
Any info would be helpful,
 Thanks,
  David

Mike,It's possible that returning passengers only listed their date and place of naturalization in later years.I don't have it memorized. Maybe others will have been doing that type of research more recently.I do think I remember seeing this in records from maybe about 1918 and later. It's also at a time when most records were typed, not printed by hand.So in case he did more travel in later years, maybe you'll find something like that.Doug da Rocha HolmesSacramento, CaliforniaPico & Terceira Genealogist916-550-1618www.dholmes.com

[AZORES-Genealogy] Re: Introduction and Information on Anthony (Antonio, Antonie) Family from Flores

2013-12-13 Thread destinyslink
Hello Eric,

Thanks. I had only seen the 1859 entry but not the others. That is an
interesting observation. So the thinking would be that he added a "c"
because there was also another of the same name. The 1859 and 1880 census
do not show the "c" but the 1870 does. He is noted twice in the 1860
census one with the middle initial and one without. I think he did end up
selling wares as a peddler after his boating days based on some city
directories. The marriage announcement in the paper did not show the "c"
in 1830. Looks like the key will be finding his baptismal entry if
possible in the CCA which would give us his parents names. Thanks again
for the idea.

Sonia,As others will also tell you, it's going to be tough when you don't have a more specific location. You will have to do everything possible to find a more exact location. It's almost like saying my ancestors came from Europe, can anyone help? But the original spelling of the names will be a step in the right direction:Simão is his Portuguese name, son of Francisco António (or Antão) Gabriel and Francisca Maria.I find that most often Anton or Antone comes from António, but Antão is a name and if that were to be anglicized it would likely be Anton.Doug da Rocha HolmesSacramento, CaliforniaPico & Terceira Genealogist916-550-1618www.dholmes.com

A possibility would be he stowed away on a whaler and became crew, then
jumped ship in Canada,U.S. or Brazil. Never studied the effects of WWI on
Commercial Whaling or Passenger ships coming out of the Azores. Merchant
ships were definitely targets for the German U-boats that prowled the
Atlantic.

Re: [AZORES-Genealogy] naturalization

2013-12-13 Thread Shirl Sereque
My grandfather's naturalization was also on a card like what you described.
Have you written to Massachusetts Vital Records?  They were very helpful to me.
- Shirl -

 From: Mike

I found on ancestry a naturalization record, looks like an index card on a
roll-a-dex for my GGgrandfather Antonio Silveira Pereira for Sept 5th, 1901,
this date matches exactly what he told in a news paper article about him. It
also falls in line with with a passenger list record him, his wife and my great
grandmother, for them returning from the Azores May 17th, 1902, on the ship
Peninsular for a trip he mentions in the news paper article as well.
Everything I have though says he lived in and around the New Redford,
Dartmouth, and Fairleigh area, but the Naturalization shows him becoming a
citizen in Providence, RI.

My question is, since I can't find any record of his naturalization in Mass,
for that time, would he have to take a trip to Providence for naturalization in
1901?

should go pretty fast to get to Vila Franca do Campo. (I Hope)

They were also used in WWI, The U. S. protested after the Sinking of the
Lusitania which also killed 128 Americans who were on board. Germany agreed
to change their Rules of engagement but later went back to unrestricted
Submarine warfare in early 1917 as they knew the U. S. was going to enter
the War. I just havn't been able to find out if any of the 5,000 ships
sunk were Whalers attacked on purpose or by mistaken identity.
