Either way if they go to Ribeira Grande or Vila, I have research in both
places, since the film reader here is not able to view the films. So I will
be happy either way. I mostly need baptism for Vila Franca do Campo and in
Ribeira Grande Marriages and Baptisms I need. Two lines I have not worked
on one in Ponta Garca and the other in Maia.

Hi All,

in your opinion, what is the most affordable online record archive in the
United States? I need to make several Marriage and Death inquiries and just
checked www.archives.com that looks nice and clean and has a one year
subscription for 30$.

I am looking for a Manuel Rocha that according to his birth record was married

What are your suggestions? I know there are probably hundreds of sites offering

are some free governmental services, similar to CCA?

Re: [AZORES-Genealogy] USA Online Records

2014-01-10 Thread Cheri Mello
Hi Ricardo C,

I'd use Family Search first because they are free.

The American CCA is the National Archives and Records Administration
(NARA). In order to get digitized, they partnered with different entities,
such as Ancestry. So not all NARA records are free.

What I'd do, is find what I can on Family Search. Then I'd search Ancestry
(a lot of the searches are free, but you can't see much). If there aren't
too many look ups for Ancestry, just make a list and post them here. Many
of us have an Ancestry subscription and can do a look up for you. Yes,
some of us are mutts on this list :)

Pam,

I'm not sure if they would upload Ribeira Seca that is in Vila Franca.
They were formed in June, 2002. They broke off from Sao Miguel Arcanjo. It
seems that they upload records before 1910 or so.

There's a Ribeira Seca in Ribeira Grande. It has been there a long time.

Wish they didn't allow 2 freguesias of the same name on the same island!

And if they decide that Sao Miguel Arcanjo should be called Matriz, then
it's:

   - Água de Alto
   - Matriz (Sao Miguel Arcanjo)
   - Ponta Garça
   - Ribeira das Tainhas
   - São Pedro

So we will wait and see :)

[AZORES-Genealogy] RE: help translation, flamengos, fayal

2014-01-10 Thread nancy jean baptiste
Manoel, Rosemarie, Altino and Lee,

Thank you for the information you've shared. I find this record interesting
because it's unusual. I found another record for this same coupleanother
baptism, 1744-1763, page 0024, third record down on the left...Maria,...again,
right after the fathers name, Jose Pereira (I believe that's correct) it has
the word "moreno".not capitalized as a name would be and just like the same
word on page 0014.obviously the priest thought it should be noted that he
was "moreno". Maybe, Altino is right and the priest is saying the father is
black or dark.any other possibilities, no capital, I doubt it's a name.

Enjoying the mysteries revealed through research!

Thanks for input,
Nancy Jean

Morganho is a "nickname" for a Small Rat, I wonder if it is MORGADO? A very
common name in Azores. Morgano could be a missspelled Morgado

RE: [AZORES-Genealogy] ROCHA - Santo Antonio Alem Capelas

2014-01-10 Thread Evee Kiler
I have found in my translation attempts that it is very helpful to look at
the records before and after the one I am interested in because sometimes in
other records the vicar wasn't in such a hurry or the ink is darker or
whatever might have made the letters easier to read and compare to my
ancestor's record. And, yes, like Cheri said.the words aren't always
spelled the same...but "close enough", I guess.

Rick P,

Pam Santos had a letter dated from about February of 2013 that said Ribeira
Grande and then Vila Franca. The link you provided from Sept leads us to
believe that they are skipping over Ribeira Grande. I think there's less
to upload in Vila Franca if they stay with the "uploading by council"
method. Maybe it's "uploading by freguesia" method. Guess we play wait
and see. And who knows, half way through this they could have a change in
directors and switch methods again. Guess they like to keep us on our

Nancy,

Though all translation is treason I think moreno is brunet,

In the island of São Miguel Moreno is a surname of a well known family from
the early 1500's.
I am talking about João Moreno or João Afonso Moreno, from Vila Franca,
whose wife Maria or Mor Anes died at the age of 108 years old and had 30
chidren, grandchildren, g-grandchidren and g-g-grandchildren, according to
Dr. Gaspar Frutuoso.

And he is my ancestor too.

RE: [AZORES-Genealogy] ROCHA - Santo Antonio Alem Capelas

2014-01-10 Thread pico
Ricardo,It's pretty rare in the Azores, at least, but don't forget there is another surname of ROXO and that might sometimes be spelled Rocho.Strangely, ROXA is also a name used in Portugal today, along with ROXO. Maybe the name came about from the misspellings by priests from centuries ago.Yea, Maxado is a very common sighting. And your example of Xodre is great. I have ancestors named Sodre and wondered exactly what you said about how it was pronounced then and now. I know of the place in Lisboa called Cais do Sodre is named, I think, after a member of the Sodre line that was important very early on in Portugal, before they moved to Graciosa and on to the other islands nearby.Doug da Rocha HolmesSacramento, CaliforniaPico & Terceira Genealogist916-550-1618www.dholmes.com

Hi Ricardo,Yes, the archaic spelling is Roxa. But it really seems to be something individual priests use here and there. It's Rocha in records for every century, but also Roxa in the same centuries. The main point is the SH sound of Rocha (sounds like ROSHA) has two ways to be spelled. Sometimes it's CH and other times X like Cheri said. Teixeira is the X example, too.It helps to sound out what the name is spelled like and you might figure out what the modern spelling should be that way.Oh, Chaves is another example. Maybe it can also be spelled Xaves

Way back we had a discussion and it was translating a letter from CCA. From
that we all assumed that Ribeira Grande would be after Ponta Delgada. In re
reading the messages I now see it does not mention Ribeira Grande.

This is the short link to the Azores Google Group Archive and the message.

Rick P,

The CCA didn't say Ribeira Grande then Vila Franca. It was me, saying that.
I was going with the alphabetical order idea.

Before the change in directors at the CCA, they were going to do another
island then come back to Sao Miguel. Guess they had a change of plans.
Lucky for the Vila Franca folks!

Hi John and Margaret-

Thank you for helping me try to find the elusive Domingo's Moniz Machado
Birth info. Although I have basic information for him, I can't go back any
further than his parents because I don't know which freguesias in ponta
Delgada they were from and up to now i haven't found them.

John, I will study the link you sent again in more in depth because the
dates are off but the Names are similar.

I received Domingos' birthdate from his daughter who was my mother in law.
>From census records, it appears both Domingo's and his brother Clement,
immigrated in different years. Domingo's immigrated in 1885 at age 11.
Their parents were Jacinto Machado and Emilia Moniz. I will look Again
through the Sao Jose baptisms in search of any one with those parents.
They also had a sister named Maria. (She married a Peter F Silva in Boston
and had a daughter named Beatrice (Pimentel) born in 1900. )

Margaret, I knew Domingo's had traveled to the Azores and visited his
brother in law, Manoel Almeida. Domingo's' wife was Maria Georgina
d'Almeida and they married in Boston. When he traveled to see that relative
he was already a dentist and she was expecting a baby and didn't travel with
him. He sent her a stash of postcards sometimes sending 2 or 3 a day. He
mentions seeing a relative named Captain Mello. I also have Maria
Georgina's mother's passport which shows Maria Georgina's parents were from
the Sao Jose parish of Ponta Delgada.

To me there is some mystery that I may never solve with Domingo's because my
mother in law always told us he was raised by the Jesuits. Apparently, he
had a "guardian angel" who helped him get an education. He was able to get
into Tufts University and become a dentist. I have his graduation picture
and certificate. He was married during the time he was in dental school.

But I just could not find his birthplace in order to trace the family. I
also tried learning which Jesuits in the Boston area would have raised him.

Thank you so much for helping me-

The CCA didn't say Ribeira Grande then Vila Franca. It was me, saying
that. I was going with the alphabetical order idea.

Before the change in directors at the CCA, they were going to do another

Lucky for the Vila Franca folks!

Thank you all for input,

I'm aware of the phonetic sound, I live here and deal with it everyday, [?] also
muito obrigado Joao S. Lopes, what you say makes a lot of sense, I have
found in the same book, same year, different vicars spelling same words in
two or more different ways. As Doug said I believe they didn't all follow
same rules!

I have found more and more, as I go back in time, archaic words. Sometimes
the problem is not the way they write but their calligraphy... I am getting
there besides the difficulties, feels good having a intense paleography
course reading back, year after year, and being able to identify more
easily now what they are saying.

I would not be surprised if I find my name with Xaves instead of Chaves.

Words like "Foy" meaning "Foi" = Was, are more often found prior 1850 as I
am experiencing now, Gayle. I actually saw a Maxado as well, looking for my
line of Rocha.

Cheri, I can perfectly imagine what these ascendants have gone trough,
believe me. I have known people still alive who told me stories about how
hard it was, people who remember that their humble poor houses had a floor
of "Terra Batida" and much more!

Thank you all

which shows Maria Georgina's parents were from the Sao Jose parish of Ponta
Delgada.
To me there is some mystery that I may never solve with Domingo's because my
mother in law always told us he was raised by the Jesuits. Apparently, he had
a "guardian angel" who helped him get an education. He was able to get into
Tufts University and become a dentist. I have his graduation picture and
certificate. He was married during the time he was in dental school.
But I just could not find his birthplace in order to trace the family. I also
tried learning which Jesuits in the Boston area would have raised him.
Thank you so much for helping me-

Any ideas? Thanks.

Just noticed your post and must agree with Cheri as to how to request

Anyway, the CCA image number and the page number don't agree, however

Paternal grandson of Jose de Melo Botelho and Maria dos Anjos and maternal

Hope that helps.

Can someone help with translation. I am looking at St. Antonio, Ponta Delgada,
San Miguel, year 1893 baptism on page 32 on the right side first entry for
Antonio.
I see his father listed as Manuel de Melo, and his mother Maria ? It looks
like Jose d'occupacao. Is she the daughter of Jose d'occupacao?
Thank you.

[AZORES-Genealogy] Re: Starting the search of my ancestors

2014-01-10 Thread Rodney Figueiredo
Hi Jeff,

Have you looked at the Rio Grande do Sul Catholic Church records on
familysearch? There are only a few states that have been fully uploaded.
I've found a lot on my family (including my Azorean ancestors), but we are
from Rio de Janeiro. I checked and they do have Rio Grande do Sul records
online - both for Viamão and for Osório. The records typically go to the
late 1800s, at which point the Civil Registry took over from the church.
Unfortunately, Civil Registries for RS are not yet available online, but
those are easier to find in local town notaries since they're more recent.
However, if you have an ancestor born in the mid-to-late 1800s that you
know of, that would be the easiest place to start looking. There are no
indexes available, but if you browse the books in the parish your family
came from, you should be able to find someone that is related. I've found
that parish records were great at informing the parish where the family
came from in Portugal. That's how I linked mine back, so hopefully you'll
find a great detailed record. Here's the link to the two parishes you were
looking at:

Osório:
https://familysearch.org/search/image/index#uri=https%3A%2F%2Ffamilysearch.org%2Frecords%2Fwaypoint%2FM97B-NYV%3An879109685%3Fcc%3D2177295
Viamão:
https://familysearch.org/search/image/index#uri=https%3A%2F%2Ffamilysearch.org%2Frecords%2Fwaypoint%2FM97B-N1N%3A181155%3Fcc%3D2177295

Good luck!

Rodney
