Re Holmes and Homem. My uncle, from Teceira, Jacinto Leal daRocha Homem, was the first to immigrate to the US. He served with US forces in World War I, and was active in the American Legion, being Commander of the Oakland chapter..  It was he who changed the name to Holmes, and when the rest of the family came over, including my father Manuel, they all changed to Holmes.  Why Holmes I don't know. Why not Man, which is what Homem translates to. The name change was quite gradual. As noted in my  book, "Portuguese Pioneers of the Sacramento Area,"  the Sacramento City Directory for 1908 lists Jacinto R. Homem. The 1909 directory lists Jesse R. Homem. The 1911 directory lists Jesse R. Holmes. Lionel Rocha Holmes

HOMEM is common on Pico and Terceira.HOMEM da COSTA is a common combination.I get my name Holmes from Homem. It is commonly misspelled as HOMEN because when properly pronounced the end has sort of a ENG or EN ending. Plus, the H is silent, so the whole thing is like OMENG or OMEN. I'm sure there are variations depending on which island. Many named Homem on Faial trace back to Pico. My great grandmother who was born in Faial had the surname Homem. I had never heard the name or met anyone with the name before coming across it in family records but apparently it's common. There was a family of famous cartographers in the 1500s with the last name. I wonder if we are descendants. Lopo Homem and his son Diogo Homem and nephew Andreas Homem are the most well known of the family. Diogo's work is by far the best of the age. You can even buy a reproduction of his most famous work, but it isn't cheap. Diogo apparently lived a fugitive's life after killing someone in a fight. Antonio R,

Yes, emigration out of the Azores are the Passaportes book. The port of
Ponta Delgada, on Sao Miguel island is online at the CCA site:
http://culturacores.azores.gov.pt/ig/

The direct URL to the Passaportes is:
http://www.culturacores.azores.gov.pt/ig/passaportes/Default.aspx

Pick Ponta Delgada from the drop down menu, then OK, then find the record
group that contains 1915.

Re: [AZORES-Genealogy] Re: Marriage Record of Manuel da Costa and Filomena da Conceicao (around 1863)

2014-03-15 Thread Joseph Costa
Now I’m on a search for Manuel’s father Francisco Jose (Feitor) da Costa.
Thank you for the marriage record. In the margin of the record, I believe
it says that Francisco was 25 and Maria de Jesus was 18. This would mean
that he would have been born around 1791. I searched through all of the
Matriz birth records from 1786 through 1799 and I couldn’t find him. I
also looked in Sao Pedro. Will keep hunting..

2014-03-15 Thread rcapodc
Wow, MaryAnn, that’s marvelous! Finally books that have been out-of-print for
years are being made available to the masses! Hopefully, they will get many
more online for us all to use.

If you type in Saudades da Terra the volumes for Sao Miguel and Madeira come
up.

you will have to use Google Translate or some other translating program.

[AZORES-Genealogy] Cabral/Pimentel and Da Costa/Pimentel Probably Cousins

2014-03-15 Thread Herb
Does anyone have any information on marriages of Pedro Cabral and Maria de
Pimentel or Joao da Costa and Sabena de Pimentel. Their children Jose
Cabral and Barbara Pimentel married in Igreja de Sao Jorge Nordeste, Sao
Miguel on 8 June 1814 .
http://culturacores.azores.gov.pt/biblioteca_digital/SMG-ND-SAOJORGE-C-1783-1815/SMG-ND-SAOJORGE-C-1783-1815_item1/P224.html,

CCA # 224.

I've searched all the marriage records for Nordeste from 1768 to 1814.
The marriage record of Pedro and Maria does say that the parents were from
the same Matriz of Sao Jorge "naturais e freguezes dest dita Matriz" and I
know what that means, but I have not been able to located them after
multiple sweeps through all the records

thanks for any help. They would be my grandparents
