Rocio M, The 3 pieces to get you started in genealogy are a name, a date, and a place. You only have the name. #22 Maria, 2nd of the name, daughter of Joao Machado de Mello, and of Maria Izabel. Blue ink: Died in the freguesia of her nativity, on the day 6 of February? Something something something of this conservatory 14 . Lajes do Pico 9 of February, of 1000 900 50 and 3. Someone will give you a better translation. I think it basically says Maria died over in Lajes do Pico on 6 of Feb and it's record # 14 of 1953. [AZORES-Genealogy] Re: Help with parish of origin for Marianna Furtada
JR has accurately discussed the documents and provided you with Marianna's baptismal record. However, I would like to chime in since Mariana is one of my ancestors. Her sister, Antonia da Trinidade, was my 5GGM. Also, Mariana's husband, Juzeph, is also an ancestor, as his uncle, Leonardo, is my 6GGF, the son of Manoel de Mello, and, Anna da Moura, of Santa Maria.. There is more info should you need it. [AZORES-Genealogy] Last name of the father of the groom (Jacome?)
Hello: On the first link below, the left hand page. Is the groom's father's surname Jacome (I read his name as Joze de Resendes (Ja_come?). I saw that Jacome name again for him on another record but I'm not clear on it. Here's the link. http://culturacores.azores.gov.pt/biblioteca_digital/SMA-VP-SANTOESPIRITO-C-1751-1790/SMA-VP-SANTOESPIRITO-C-1751-1790_item1/P73.html In trying to verify that name, I searched for birth of Joze's son, Francisco. While looking for the birth of his son in 1742, I came across another child of Joze. The handwriting was a shock! :)(oh my goodness!). I need to get used to studying this priest's handwriting but I THINK it is record for Victoria, dau of Jose de Resendes Ja come (?) or jocatre (?) and Marianna Carvalha born ? RE: [AZORES-Genealogy] Any information regarding: Henrique Jose Rapozo de Amaral Spouse: Geronima Maria - Portugal
Tanya, I can totally relate to your enthusiasm. When I first started, I drove my husband crazy (even though it is his family that I am researching). In answer to your questions: The record is from Nossa Senhora das Candeias of Candelaria church. So far, all I have used is what this group refers to as the CCA website. http://www.culturacores.azores.gov.pt/ig/registos/Default.aspx You choose the island, concelho and freguesia that you want to look at. Then pick baptism, casamento(marriage) or obitos. The records are grouped into ranges of years. When you find the year range that fits for what you are looking for, click on the "ver" to the far right. It will open a new window in your browser. From there, you can scroll through the pages of the book and look at the images. I would go back to the book that included the 1826 baptism. Start at the beginning of that and look for all of Manoel's siblings. I work forwards and backwards from my direct ancestor's birth date, until I go about 5 years without a sibling (depending on how often the couple seems to be having children). This gives me an idea of when the parents married and if they only have a few children, then I look to see if one of the parents died around the time of the last child. Some baptismal records give more detailed information about the parents/grandparents than others. This is another good reason to look for all the siblings. Once you think you have all the siblings, look for the marriage record. Start at the year the first child is born and work back from that year. Hint-look at the baptism of the oldest child to see if it says "legitimate" if it doesn't, the wedding may have taken place after the child was born, or the priest just didn't include that. Use the Azores GenWeb site. I assume that is where you found this group. I use reference information off that site every day. I have a binder full of "cheat sheets" that I have printed from there. My favorites are the "Portuguese words list", "Portuguese names list", and the alphabet helped initially too. There is also a short article by Cheri about Portuguese naming conventions that was extremely informative for me. Make sure you look under "Maps". When you open the window for the map of Sao Miguel, scroll down. Under the map, they have a fabulous list of church names, freguesias, and concelhos. I copied it to an excel spreadsheet and now keep the document open at all times on my computer. Good luck and I am so jealous that you are getting to visit Candelaria. My husband's 3rd great grandmother is from there. I hope you enjoy your genealogical journey through the records and your vacation in the Azores. He had 22 matches in YDNA67, one as close as a distance of 2. NO GEDCOMS. I wrote to the closest with the name of Roque. She was from Porto Rico if I remember correctly. She told me none of her ancestors had ever been to the Azores and she wouldn't share her tree. (Strike out ) Only 1 other had a Portuguese name. The rest are English or Irish. I couldn't find a connection with the 3 who posted their GEDCOM's . I have had my brother tested for everthing including 111 markers, in the hope someday we will have a definite match. and so I'll keep waiting. I would really like to know what my real name should be. We have 357 Family Finder tests, we have 239 Y-DNA 37 marker results and and only 22 more have gone out to the Y67 level (if I'm reading this chart right). There are 655 total people in the DNA project. There are 1221 members of this Google Group, although some emails are duplicates (home and work, for instance). Family Finder - most definitely. [AZORES-Genealogy] Re: Santa Maria - São Pedro - Online
I notice you are still in the early 1800's, but believe me, when you get to the older records, they are difficult to read. I have a few ancestors, like Cheri and Shirley, that have their origins in early Santa Maria. There was small and steady migration of people from Santa Maria to Sao Miguel starting about 1695 all the way through to the 1900's. So I will be watching in case you have similar names. Good luck Ricardo!! Despite being part of Povoacao Concelho, all the records of RQ before they began their own records, circa 1792 for baptisms, were kept in Ponta Garca. People who lived at one end, that is Grotas Fundas, were often closer to Ribeira Quente. Along the eastern border people established a trail that was used for travel, but mostly trade and commerce, between Ponta Garca and Ribeira Quente. Today it is walking trail with wonderful vistas of Vila Franca and Povoacao. On the western border, people who lived Ribeira das Tainhas also had their records kept in Ponta Garca. This is a marvelous book filled with facts/pictures/stories. Very much worth even $30 and softbound. I have the hardbound copy myself and refer to it many times! So happy that it is now in reprint! It is soft cover (the original was hard bound) and I think I heard it costs $30, but you'll have to confirm that with my father or Mary Ann, our president (I'm sure she will post a comment, since she's on this list). This reprint contains many corrections and a few additions, I believe. If you have family in Sacramento, I believe you will find this book of great interest. This is terrific. Thank you so much. I'm still in process of converting my old PAF files to Roots magic. This site has been so helpful in gathering information from my ancestors. So this records are from Nossa Senhora das Candeias of Candelaria church? I goggled that church building and it is beautiful, I need to do further research of the building to see what has been restored, etc. I am so excited to visit Candelaria and actually have a tangible connection between my relatives. So, the next question is where do I go to find more birth and death dates/ places of the parents and grandparents? How do you find records without dates attached to names? My mind is spinning. Sorry, so excited with new found info. thanks to you and Cheri! I think I am becoming addicted to this work. [AZORES-Genealogy] Help with parish of origin for Marianna Furtada
I have been unable to find the baptismal record for my husband's 7th great grandmother Marianna Furtada. I have been looking on Panta Garca, VFDC, with no luck. I went back and reviewed her marriage record and a couple of her children's baptisms. I am including the marriage record and a baptismal record that lists Marianna's freguesia of origin separately from her husband. Baptismal record for Jonevusa - (I could use help with the spelling on this name too) is on the left side, bottom entry http://culturacores.azores.gov.pt/biblioteca_digital/SMG-VF-PONTAGARCA-B-175 2-1760/SMG-VF-PONTAGARCA-B-1752-1760_item1/P21.html Marriage record for Jose' de Mello and Marianna Furtada is on the left side, bottom entry http://culturacores.azores.gov.pt/biblioteca_digital/SMG-VF-PONTAGARCA-C-167 5-1749/SMG-VF-PONTAGARCA-C-1675-1749_item1/P191.html It looks to me like the freguesia name is Myma but I don't see that on any list of freguesia names. Could it be an alternate spelling for Maia? Thanks for the help. Hi Manny , My greatgrand daughter is related to the Fontes from Candelaria . She goes back to a Bartolomeu Fonte. Manuel Jorge Martins is Bartolomeu's six times great grand son. Were you born the 2 August, in Madalena, Pico.1964.?Was your father Manuel Dutra Martins and mother Maria Adelina Martins {Jorge}? Just started to research her family. I have confirmed the family but I have not researched it further. Does anyone in this list have Fonte or Fontes family from New Beford? They were originally from Candelaria but were living in Flamengos Faial, I believe that they moved there during the time when Faial was exporting oranges. RE: [AZORES-Genealogy] Ribeira Grande Records
They wrote "mais ou menos" nearly 100% of the time, so I don't see it as a case where the priest didn't care. You can also look at that in another way - it might be how the priest viewed their condition or how old they looked. If someone who was really 85 was estimated to be 70yrs or so, then that might be a good thing!Often a woman can be estimated to be much older than she really was. To me, that makes me think she really had a hard life and looked 20 years older than she really was.Doug da Rocha HolmesSacramento, CaliforniaPico & Terceira Genealogist916-550-1618www.dholmes.com Original Message Subject: Re: [AZORES-Genealogy] Ribeira Grande Records From: Antonio RoqueDate: Wed, April 02, 2014 3:42 am To: azores@googlegroups.com When a priest would write "' mais ou menos "' in a death certificate was to me a very NOT caring kind of priest or was he too busy to ask a family member as to when the person was born and then correctly make the correct age notation? Hi Herb, if I said any other way I didn't mean it, yes I loose myself in writing sometimes, but the issue here is only spelling, converting names, and tracking that back will be difficult if one doesn't know that, (Example) Sousa, de Sousa or DeSousa is in most cases the same thing! And I also wanted to understand why that happens there! And I am here to learn and share as well, and I did, example, I didn't know what you all referred to as a "Brick Wall" and now I do :-) and I hope I never "hit" one! [AZORES-Genealogy] Re: Still Looking for.Joseph Silva, Born 1830, I believe Flores. Went to boston, then came to Australia in 1855.
Lyn You HAVE to use the DNA tests to unravel this one. With this level of information, I really doubt that you can get a confidence level to go above simple guesses. Cheri will tell you all about it, but in your case I'd do a Family Finder test for myself, and get a few of Joe's male-only-descendents to do the Family Finder + Y67 tests. There are enough people in this group that you should get a Y67 match to establish the identity of the family of José's father. João C.
