[AZORES-Genealogy] Re: help with reading record Ponta Delgada , I. S. Miguel

2014-06-06 Thread João Ventura
I believe he's natural da vila de Tomar, filho de Francisco de Fonseca de
Almeida e Agatha(?).., ambos moradores na dita vila, freguesia de S. Maria
dos Olivais.

The books from that parish will eventually be
here: http://tombo.pt/en/f/tmr11 , once the Arquive of Santarém places them
online.

[AZORES-Genealogy] Soccer World Cup, the US team and the Azores

Hi all,

For those who can read Portuguese (or don't mind using Google Translate),
this is a very interesting article on the Ponta Delgada SC from Fall River,
MA:

From someone who lives in Germany, and will have the difficult task of
sitting though the first game in this World Cup between Germany and
Portugal, I wish you guys all the best in the coming game a few days later
between Portugal and the USA team. I of course hope that Portugal wins them

[AZORES-Genealogy] Flores

2014-06-06 Thread spp1680
Hi all,

It turns out I will be traveling to the Azores for three weeks in July!
I'll spend some time on São Miguel, Faial, Flores, and maybe Pico. I will
be on Flores for the Festa do Emigrante. While I am there I'd like to do
some family research. Does anyone know if there is an accessible archive on
Flores? I am looking for birth records for my great-great-grandparents:
Caetano Freitas (born 5 August, 1845) and Mary Isabel Avellar (born 7 Feb.
1855). They were married and died in California, so I don't expect to find
anything on them after their birth. But it would be great if I could find
their parents or other family members. No idea what freguesias they came
from. I was always told they were from Pico, until a third cousin found a
death record for Caetano in California that listed his place of birth as
Flores, Azores.

Obrigado,

Steve

Steve,
The records for Flores are held in the district archive. The district
archive for Flores is in Horta, on Faial.

Records are organized by freguesia (village). So you need your freguesia to
begin searching.

The census says he came to the US 1865. I found the following record
showing someone by this name (using the De) coming to the US via
Australia. He was a Greehand on the ship. Could this possibly be him? Age
doesn't match but sometimes they are incorrect. When did he go to

it doesn't show where he came from from in the Azores only says
Portuguese. Ship was going to New Bedford MA. I am not great at reading

Steve and I worked on this couple last year.

The Caetano de Freitas on the Pacific whaler is not his guy, but may be his

centered in Lajes and Lomba, and the other on Santa Cruz

With all the resources available for Flores online or as ebook, I think you

[AZORES-Genealogy] MtDNA Haplogroup J

2014-06-06 Thread Patricia Straube
We just received the MtDNA results for my husband's mother, Mary Elsie
Amaral. Only the basic test was performed but there were no matches at HVR1
and HVR2. There were over 1000 matches at HVR1 alone and while that is
interesting, it is not that helpful. She is a part of the Family Tree DNA
Azores Project but her results haven't appeared on the MtDNA results page.
She belongs to Haplogroup J and her earliest known ancestor in the female
line is Anna de Jesus Pavão, who married Francisco Sousa and whose
daughter, Rosa de Jesus, was called a native of Ribeirinha, when her
children were baptized at Nossa Senhora da Estrela, Ribeira Grande, São
Miguel, beginning in 1868. Rosa de Jesus married Jose Raposo, also called
Jose Raposo Pombeiro. Sorry, but because this is Ribeira Grande, I don't
have any birthdates or marriage dates for them yet.

[AZORES-Genealogy] Re: MtDNA Haplogroup J

2014-06-06 Thread Antonio Faria
Good Morning Patricia,

In order to have an mtDna match that is genealogically significant you
would need to upgrade to Full Sequence even then you could only verify
whether the match is is more recent or distant through comparison of
genealogical records an HRV1 match has a 50% chance of being within the
last 1,300 years however reviewing your matches at this level will give you
anthropological insight on your mother in laws ancestry. MtDna haplogroup J
mutation is believed to have come from a woman that lived in the Near East
or Caucasus region 45,000 years ago and is equally frequent in
Europe(particularly norther Europe) and the Middle East. This Ftdna link
clarifies matching
levels.https://www.familytreedna.com/learn/mtdna-testing/tell-closeness-relationship/

It is also interesting that I match your husband's mother on family finder
and have no recorded genealogical ancestors from Sao Miguel.

Antonio

I thought I’d share something with the list, and maybe help someone along
the way …… We are always told to keep an open mind in genealogy, don’t have
preconceptions, and investigate every possibility in our search for the
truth. That lesson was brought home to me recently.

As background, my 3GG were Francisco Pereira da Rosa and Maria Delfina
who married and had their children in Flamengos, Faial. I found 8 children
for them as well as followed their ancestors back years ago. Child #1 was
my 2GG, Francisco Pereira da Rosa (we’ll call him Frank Jr.). More girls,
then Child #4 was a Manuel (we’ll call him Manuel #1). The rest were girls
until you got to child #8, another Manuel (we’ll call him Manuel #2). This
family emigrated to Washington Twp., Alameda Co. California and I have
documented them and their children forward in time. I had “assumed” all
these years, that Manuel #1 had died as a child or infant because Manuel #2
had married in CA and had 10 kids ….. I don’t think I ever searched for his
obito. So, fast forward to a couple of days ago …….

I was contacted by another researcher who, in the process of checking out
a match on FTDNA, realized that her match was related to my Rosa family. I
was skeptical at first because I thought this Manuel had died early and
didn’t ever have a family. Anyway, to shorten this story, after a search on
Ancestry, I found some descendants of this Manuel #1. None of these people
knew where Manuel was from or anything about his lineage. But, among their
sources, were obituaries on Manuel #1 and his siblings listed, including
married names, all matched up to my family!! Now, my 2GG, Frank Jr., always
used Rosa or later, Rose, as their surname as did Manuel #2….. all Roses.
This newfound Manuel #1 used the name of Rodgers, Manuel Pereira Rodgers,
and all his descendants are Rodgers, also! Now this “new” Manuel was
originally know as Manuel Pereira Rosa, just like his younger brother,
Manuel #2. He settled and lived in Petaluma, Sonoma Co., CA while his other
two brothers lived in Centerville and Alvarado in Alameda Co.

Another little interesting tidbit here is that some years ago, I
interviewed an older cousin of my grandmother. She was 90 years old then
but she told me there were some brothers who kept using Rosa and some that
used Rodgers. I investigated that, halfheartedly because, remember the two
brothers I knew of, used Rosa and the third one I had assumed to die early.
Hmmph! Well, I was sure wrong and now have a whole additional branch to my
 Family Tree!

So, the moral of this little story is NOT to make assumptions. Usually
when there are more than two children born in a family with the same given
name, it means the first one died early. But, not always! It seems crazy to
me that that this family named two children both Manuel, but then they also
named two of their daughters Maria Delfina! And they both lived, married,
and had kids. So, you just never know! And, DNA does work and IS helpful!
If you haven’t submitted yours yet, get ‘er done! You never know what
 connections you might find.

So of course, these people are not siblings. What they must be are siblings by marriage. The groom is marrying his sister-in-law.His two wives are the siblings by consanguinidade. It happens to be almost the exact scenario of my latest article that came out this week in O Progresso.www.sacramentophcs.comDoug da Rocha HolmesSacramento, CaliforniaPico Terceira Genealogist916-550-1618www.dholmes.com

John,
I have most of this information, but not all. I did not have Miguel do
Monte's parents nor some of the children's marriages. But, I never got to
read the records myself, so that's what I'm doing now. I have other
ancestors to fill in lines on, so it's no big deal (and good practice
anyway.)

I agree that for the most part the information fits, except for the death
record I found in 1810 for Miguel do Monte husband of Thereza Furtada, with
the son Joze Miguel Furtado. This does not seem to fit the information
gathered and attributed to Miguel do Monte I and his three wives. If his
son name Miguel married in Achada to a Thereza Furtada it's possible the
record is lost in that 1-2 year span that is missing.

Thanks for the information that you sent. I will compare it with what I've
collected.

[AZORES-Genealogy] DNA information (New Admin; Conference Sale; AncestryDNA)

2014-06-06 Thread Cheri Mello
1) The Azores DNA project on Family Tree DNA (FTDNA) has a new admin! His
name is Kalani Mondoy and he has his lines from the Azores to Hawaii. He's
really good with autosomal DNA (Family Finder) and third party tools.

2) At the genealogy conference, the sale is on Family Finder, Y-DNA 37,
Y-DNA 67, and the Full Mitochondrial Sequence. Even though the conference
ends Sunday, they provided conference attendees with some coupon codes. If
you are interested, email one of the admins (listed below).

3) Ancestry has discontinued the Y-DNA and mtDNA testing. Actually, they
are going to purge their database of all those results by Friday, September
5, 2014. They spent big money buying out Relative Genetics and Sorenson
and then they decide to get rid of it all. They are keeping their
autosomal, or so they are stating. So if you have tested with
Ancestry.com, I'd transfer the Y-DNA and the autosomal over to FTDNA (mtDNA
doesn't transfer due to compatibility issues). After September 5th, you
won't be able to see your Y-DNA or mtDNA results.

Re: [AZORES-Genealogy] Flores

Thanks, Cheri. When I was in Horta in 2011 they would not let me see any of
the actual record books. They sat me down at a computer and pointed me to
the web site, which I found really frustrating because the records were not
in any kind of useful order, and the scans were so difficult to read. I
knew the records for Faila and Pico were there, but for some reason I
thought Flores had its own archive.

Best,

Steve

[AZORES-Genealogy] Legacy Family Tree and RootsMagic (genealogy software)

2014-06-06 Thread Cheri Mello
At the conference I spoke to both Legacy Family Tree and RootsMagic
(genealogy software for your computer).

Legacy Family Tree has some volunteer translation teams working on various
languages. They have both a Brazilian language team and a continental
Portuguese team. The fellow I talked to could not remember which was
which, but one was very close to being completed with their translation.
So very soon Legacy will be available in Portuguese.

RootsMagic is working hard on making their program available for Mac
users. They are about 1 year away from that goal. Their next item is for
other languages. Bruce Buzbee asked if I could help him find volunteers to
help translate and I said yes. So perhaps around next summer that project
will be rolling along.

Re: [AZORES-Genealogy] Flores

2014-06-06 Thread Cheri Mello
Steve P,

I don't work that much with Flores records, but the records that I have
seen are in chronological order. The scans are much much better than
microfilm. All the Flores records are on the CCA site (up to 1910).

However, there are damaged books, books where the ink bled through, books
where the worms were a little hungry, etc. And then there's the
paleography (handwriting) to deal with. We all have to put up with that,
regardless of the island that we are researching.
