2014-10-18 Thread pico
Antonio,Your point is excellent.I have a cousin of a cousin by marriage (if you can follow that one!) who did Y-DNA testing and has no matches from his mainland Portuguese ancestry. Of course, it's no surprise. But if we are to have any chance at finding family connections to mainland people, DNA is the only way. I will point this out in the Portuguese Genealogy group on Facebook, where we have about 250 or so members and growing (but not growing as fast as the Azores group) and I think it could have some impact.Similarly, I recently was invited to join a Facebook group of people with Madalena, Pico ancestry and found I am related to them all (over 100 members of that group) and slowly working on convincing them to test. The answer is always to get more to test, so that's what I work on.Doug da Rocha HolmesSacramento, CaliforniaPico & Terceira Genealogist916-550-1618www.dholmes.com

That's too bad about the Portugal DNA project, I realize that the biggest chunk of FTDNA samples are from North America there is a good sized Continental Portuguese community in the US  in  New Jersey, New York . There is a lot of potential samples there.

Assunto: [AZORES-Genealogy] help with Maia marriage Hi Would appreciate if
someone could put a second set of eyes on this record of the marriage of my 8th
great grandparents Jose de Souza and Theresa de Viveiros. Right side of page.
As best as I an make out they were married on 8 Sep 1749 in Maia and the groom
was the son of Manuel de Souza who was from Capellas. After that it becomes
difficult to make out any additional information. I see some references to
quaresma and baptism which is fairly standard language on most marriages of
that time It also appears that Theresa de Viveiros was the daughter of another
Manuel de Souza ? but I cant make it out. The last name appears to start
with the letter F. Could it be Manuel de Souza Francisco? This is one of the
tougher ones for me but I am grateful that I can see the names of the bride and
groom, which is a wonderful thing. Thanks in advance for any assistance.

I am connected through Jose de Sousa and Theresa Viveiros. Their daughter Joana
married Manuel da Silva in Sao Jose on 11 July 1778. But Manuel was first
married to Joana's sister Maria who passed away. I read this in RR book awhile
back but can't remember exactly where. Anyway the Manuel da Silva and Joana de
Sousa line leads directly to my great great grandmother Maria Julia Silva and
great grandfather Francisco Mendonca. Their daughter Diana was my grandmas
mother. Amazing!!!Herb

Pam, which record does not list the name of Maria Nunes? As a matter a fact
I think these people lived in three or four places: Ribeira Grande, Furnas,
Achadinha, Ponta Garca, and if you count, Mosteiros/Bretanha (border area)
where Joao de sousa Travassos was baptised, that is five villages. Furnas
by all the evidence is a place where people went to find work. And I
believe I read from somewhere in RR, that some of these families were
involved in opening up Furnas, as it was kind of the last frontier. All the
older Furnas records are in the parish of Divino Espirito Santo, Maia; same
with Lomba da Maia, Burguete, Gorreana, etc.

Re: [AZORES-Genealogy] DNA matches that link the Azores to Mainland Portugal

Doug,

Basically I am most interested in Y-DNA and mtDNA matches that link the
Azores to Mainland Portugal to get clues about the movement that occurred
during the settlement process of the Azores . Very

little of that history is recorded and I think DNA in the future will fill
some of those gaps.

Hi Antonio,Maybe you can clarify your question, but I know some have tested who have both Y and autosomal DNA coming from the mainland and whose ancestor was living in the Azores. I have taken several DNA tests mtDNA, Y-DNA and myOrigins and lack matches to mainland Portugal. I match one person from Lisbon through myOrigins but she has a verified Pereira ancestor from Castelo Branco, Faial born about 1700. My mtDNA(T2b-T16296C!) and Y-DNA(J-M319) sub-haplogroups however are also uncommon and myOrigins really wasn't designed to connect people that share a common ancestor 15-20 generations ago. My question is does anyone on this list have significant DNA matches that link the Azores to Mainland Portugal? --

Hi

Would appreciate if someone could put a second set of eyes on this record of
the marriage of my 8th great grandparents Jose de Souza and Theresa de
Viveiros. Right side of page. As best as I an make out they were married on 8
Sep 1749 in Maia and the groom was the son of Manuel de Souza who was from
Capellas. After that it becomes difficult to make out any additional
information. I see some references to quaresma and baptism which is fairly
standard language on most marriages of that time

It also appears that Theresa de Viveiros was the daughter of another Manuel de
Souza ? but I cant make it out. The last name appears to start with the
letter F. Could it be Manuel de Souza Francisco? This is one of the tougher
ones for me but I am grateful that I can see the names of the bride and groom,
which is a wonderful thing. Thanks in advance for any assistance.

[AZORES-Genealogy] DNA matches that link the Azores to Mainland Portugal

2014-10-18 Thread A Faria

I have taken several DNA tests mtDNA, Y-DNA and myOrigins and lack matches
to mainland Portugal. I match one person from Lisbon through myOrigins but
she has a verified Pereira ancestor from Castelo Branco,

Faial born about 1700. My mtDNA(T2b-T16296C!) and Y-DNA(J-M319)
sub-haplogroups however are also uncommon and myOrigins really wasn't
designed to connect people that share a common ancestor 15-20

generations ago.

My question is does anyone on this list have significant DNA matches that
link the Azores to Mainland Portugal?

[AZORES-Genealogy] help with Maia marriage

2014-10-18 Thread Herb

Hi

Would appreciate if someone could put a second set of eyes on this record
of the marriage of my 8th great grandparents Jose de Souza and Theresa
de Viveiros. Right side of page. As best as I an make out they were
married on 8 Sep 1749 in Maia and the groom was the son of Manuel de Souza
who was from Capellas. After that it becomes difficult to make out any
additional information. I see some references to quaresma and baptism which
is fairly standard language on most marriages of that time

It also appears that Theresa de Viveiros was the daughter of another Manuel
de Souza ? but I cant make it out. The last name appears to start
with the letter F. Could it be Manuel de Souza Francisco? This is one of
the tougher ones for me but I am grateful that I can see the names of the
