Al,

Outbound or inbound?

Outbound:  I believe Horta is the nearest port to Flores.  Your ancestor
probably registered in Horta (although, if he wanted to get to America on
the next boat, he could have made his way over to Angra on Terceira or
Ponta Delgada on Sao Miguel).  Horta is not online at the CCA.  You'd have
to hire Joao Ventura, the archivist to get it for you (heroi99 at yahoo.com
).

Inbound:  You'll have to check the port of New Bedford as well as the port
of New York (the ship may have sailed to New York first and your ancestor
may be counted there.  Then the boat when on to New Bedford where he got
off.  Or the captain may have had the New York people counted in New York
and the New Bedford people counted in New Bedford).  I'm not sure what
lists exist for 1884 in America.  The port in New York was called Castle
Garden in 1884: http://www.castlegarden.org/  As for New Bedford, Michael
Tepper's American Passegner Arrival Records, list this in Table 1 (at the
back of Chapter 3):  New Bedford, Ma:  Originals 1823-1899; Copies or
Abstracts: 1826-1852 (gaps); State Dept. Transcripts: 1822, 1825-1827,
1830-1831.  There's a footnote: The Archives has an unmicrofilmed card
index for New Bedford, 1875-1899.  Tepper's book was written in 1993, so
something may have been done with that index by now.  By Archives, Tepper
means the National Archive and Record Administration (NARA).

Interesting site but not much help. There are some lectures that sound 
interesting so I will go back when I have some time.

 

The problem is that  after a person’s name in an obito the term  sui juris is 
used and no other names to help identify the person.  While the record may give 
a parish and age there is added more or less after the age. So you may be 
looking for Jose de Sousa who was born in 1724 more or less which there may be 
many to guess who it is. A challenging prospect to say the least.  Well it is a 
good thing we do not depend on Obitos to find the ancestors of a person. 

 

The thing to remember about Obitos in early Portuguese church records is they 
gave very basic information. Sometimes they help confirm other information and 
sometimes they don’t.

Hi Margaret,

I just checked a law reference book I have and sui juris is a Latin term 
meaning having the capacity to act for one’s self. Somehow I have the feeling 
that in the Obitos when it is used it also has additional meaning in that as an 
adult and having no responsibility for anyone (wife, child, parent) and because 
any information on his family (deceased parents, spouse) could not be verified 
even though provided by him such information was not written in the record and 
as such is lost.

 

I kind of have the impression it is the pais incognito of the Obits. A record 
with no information except a name and date. If he/she had an unusual name then 
searching may turn up something but a common name such as Jose de Sousa then 
good luck.

I have been looking at a number of obitos in the last few days and I understand 
most of what is written. Usually it will give a relationship such as 
filho/filha, causado/causada, viuvo/viuva, and solterio/Solteria.

it means roughly no relatives? But what is the actual translation?

[AZORES-Genealogy] Family Finder Results

I had a questions about my FF results. My Mom's side is the 100% Portuguese 
side, while my dad's is mostly German and other European. Is it common with 
to have such a low percentage of southern Europe (only 1%) that encompasses 
Spain, Portugal, Italy, etc? It seems that there should be more % for 
Southern Europe since I am half Portuguese. 

The majority of my results are Western and Central Europe (91%), with 2% of 
Finland and Northern Siberia. I also have 5% of what they categorize as 
Middle Eastern, which comprises 2 % Asia Minor (Turkey area), and 3% North 
Africa (Morocco, Tunisia, Algeria). I am guessing the 5% Middle Eastern may 
account for a Moorish influence to the Azores/Madeira.

Any insights would be greatly appreciated.

Rick, that's a misinterpretation.  Most adults are "sui juris" for it means
in latin "fully responsible".  The one who possess full civil rights and is
under no obligation with the law or parents" and it also apply to married
persons. In the 1800's the Church used it often to mean single/independent
person.

Here's an excerpt of the Canadian Act of Alberta. and link if you wish to
have a look

In the 1955 version of the *Dower Act* of the Canadian Province of Alberta;
Categories & Topics:

   - Dictionary of Latin Law Terms
   

   - REFERENCES:
  - *Dower Act*, 1955 R.S.A. ,
  Chapter 90.

§27. This act applies to all married persons whether or not they have
attained the age of twenty-one years, and for the purposes of this Act and
every matter or thing done under or by virtue of its provisions, a married
person of whatever age shall be deemed to be*sui juris*."
