2014-12-31 Thread Richard Francis Pimentel
Thanks Hermano,

That is what it looked like to me but I found another record where she is Maria
de Sao Mathias. The lower record
http://culturacores.azores.gov.pt/biblioteca_digital/SMG-RG-ESTRELA-B-1782-1785/SMG-RG-ESTRELA-B-1782-1785_item1/P5.html
It is the same woman as one is on her daughters marriage and the other is on
her granddaughters baptism. Just one of those things to confuse us.

Happy New Year.

RE: [AZORES-Genealogy] DNA question

2014-12-31 Thread pico
Hello Ally,You will likely have no trouble getting a positive result. And even if you don't, then just create a Gedmatch account for all test kits and compare that way.If one of the probable matches falls below the minimum threshold of 7cM, then you can still get lower levels to show.It could be due to certain segments staying large as "sticky segments" but it is very common to show a link between people that are born in the 1950s and common ancestors from the 1650s and earlier. You can see that's 300 years.Sometimes it's because one of the two who tested have two lines to these common ancestors (because of cousin marriages). This has happened to me many times with other matches.Chances are that your test subjects will show as closer than they really are.If anyone wants a $25 coupon on Y-DNA testing, I still have one I couldn't find anyone to use. Just a few hours left before it expires.Doug da Rocha HolmesSacramento, CaliforniaPico & Terceira Genealogist916-550-1618www.dholmes.com

Hello, I found this group while searching the SS Homeland and immigration,
my father was on that ship 22nd march 1954 and landed in Halifax.

My father was Antonio AC de Moraes and his family was from Ponta Delgada
and prior to that from Terceira.

My Father did some research in the Azores back in the 1990's and via church
records traced our family back to Antonio Dias Toste, born 1644 in S. Pedro
da Ribeirinha, going forward from him to my grandfather, son of the son;

Manoel Martinz de Azevedo (1667-1705 S. Pedro da Ribeirinha),

Manoel Martinz de Azevedo Jr (born 1690 S. Pedro da Ribeirinha)

Then the name changes to de Moraes with his son,

Fransisco Muchado de Moraes (born 1728 Angra do Heroismo)

Joze Matheus de Moraes (born 1760 Angra do Heroismo)

Manoel Joaquim de Moraes (1788 - 1851 Angra do Heroismo)

Joao Antonio de Moraes (1822 - 1906 Angra do Heroismo)

Antonio Augusto de Moraes (1843 - 1919 Angra do Heroismo)

Antonio Augusto de Moraes Jr (born 1870 Angra do Heroismo - died 1944 Ponta
Delgada)

Alcino de Moraes (1899 - 1958 Ponta Delgada).

Thank you Cheri - that extended explanation helps so much more in my
understanding, or at least trying to understand.

Both of the 1928 cousins have tested a few years ago. So tonight when I
upgrade the 1921 cousin's kit to Family Finder we are all hoping for a
"Lucky 7" year breakthrough at finding more information as he is 4 generations
away from Our Common Ancestor, and the rest of the cousins are 5/6
generations away and have less of the DNA markers that we are looking for.

It's all so fascinating and frustrating at the same time.

Thank you again,

Ally,

That's me saying that. FTDNA says back to the 2 greats, which is within
some statistical confidence level.

So my dad is born in the 1930s, so his DNA should go back to the 1730s.
It does, I've found matches from the 1740s and 1730s. However, my dad has a
match on his American side to an American ancestor born in 1696. I have
the exact same block or segment in my DNA too! That's closer to 250 years
back! Same start and stop location, same amount of cenitMorgans (cMs - a
genetic unit of measure). What that means is my dad has a sticky segment.
It won't split in half. It's an all or nothing deal. He got that whole
block from his mom. He passed that whole block onto me. Did it get passed
on to my sister? Don't know, she'd have to take a DNA test. And if she got
it too, did her kids get it? Maybe, maybe not. Does everyone who
descends from the 1696 man have that segment or block in their DNA? Nope.
Some
do and some don't.

There's no crystal ball here. If luck is on your side (and if these 2
cousins are related on this common ancestor), I'd test both the 1921 and 1928
people. Heck, I'd test both of them anyways, just to get the DNA. It's
stored for at least 25 years. Who knows what advances will be made by then.
Sadly the people who are born in the 1920s probably won't be with us in 25
years. They are leaving their legacy behind by testing their DNA.

Is there anyone in contact with a man who years ago was given
permission by the priest to completely extract the vital records of
baptism, marriage and death from this church in Clarksburg? I was told that
he would one day publish it, though he may have hit a snag with that idea.

There were so many from Pico in those early years and many Sacramento
area families could learn where their ancestors came from if they had
access to these records. The most recent priest has not been letting
anyone see the records. Even though he has retired, it would certainly be
easier if the records have been extracted than to go to the church

I believe that my grandparents may have been married there.

Thank you Pam. I actually have the 2 books that were written about
the Portuguese settlers in the area. Both sides of my family are in them. The
information is good as far as it goes. I am trying to get more information on
my grandfather's first wife in order to find when he actually came to the
Sacramento area. He died when my mother and aunt were very little so they only
had hearsay about his arrival. Also, my father's side of the family was in the
Clarkburg area and I have pieced together quite a bit about the family but the
church records would help pull things together.

Is there anyone in contact with a man who years ago was given
permission by the priest to completely extract the vital records of baptism,
marriage and death from this church in Clarksburg? I was told that he would one
day publish it, though he may have hit a snag with that idea.

There were so many from Pico in those early years and many
Sacramento area families could learn where their ancestors came from if they
had access to these records. The most recent priest has not been letting
anyone see the records. Even though he has retired, it would certainly be
easier if the records have been extracted than to go to the church

I believe that my grandparents may have been married there.

[AZORES-Genealogy] Re: Pictures, Newspapers, Funeral Cards, etc. Advice Needed

2014-12-31 Thread Anthony Soares
Hello Valerie,

Not sure where you mean by " Home" so will guess you are still in the
Hawaii'n Islands. My suggestion would be ,once you finish with the
photographic project upload the digital files to a photo sharing sharing
site like Flicker. Then you could contact Cheri about sharing the link.
Some of the materials you listed may also be of interest to local
Portuguese Clubs if they have Historical displays and could be placed on
loan in your Grand Mothers name, the same would go for items of Military
significance in regards to a Military Museum. In regards to safeguarding
the originals of Historical and as far as I am concerned Family
Significance I would contact someone at the local museum, and ask about
safe storage and display methods. Hope this helps.

Regards

Anthony

It's still possible, but one record says Anna Ferreira while the other says
Antonia Ferreira. The first record does say they are both nats and bap- PDSS,
so you can look for the baptisms there. But for the marriages, I would try one
of the other parishes first. I would check Genitis, as it also has a church
called Sao Sebastiao. I have also noted many of the people in that area show up
in nearby villages, Santo Antonio, Bretanha, Ponta Delgada and Genitis and Faja
de Baixo.

After searching the marriage index the closest marriage I was able to find is
Joao de Oliveira (son of Manuel de Sousa – deceased and Margarida de Oliveira)
and Antonia de Ferreira (daughter of Antonio Marques and Barbara de Carvalho –
deceased) on 9 Jan 1718 in Sao Sebastiao, PD. See right side:

The closeness of the record is too close to disregard but off enough to make
one hesitate as to accept it. The option is to look for children of the latter
marriage and see what they say as far as names. Any other ideas?
