[AZORES-Genealogy] Re: Horta passport , please translate observation

2015-07-01 Thread bsei2816
I am really not sure because the writing is so small, but I think it might
be:

Um pequeno buço. Uma cicatriz na face esquerda. This would be a small
moustache (like a teenager's peach fuzz). A scar on left cheek.

[AZORES-Genealogy] Re: Joseph F Ramos (Sao Miguel) + Rosa F Gomes (Fayal) Marriage -1879

2015-07-01 Thread Dano
Hi Alan,

Re -jumping ship: I'm not sure whether the time frame is right for your
GGF, but, the Azores was a fairly regular stop for American Whalers to
replenish supplies, or, to replace missing crew members. Many times some of
those crew members *did* mysteriously "disappear" during the night, when
the ship was within sight of land - especially any New England Port; that
may also have been the reason why family members were cautioned not to tell
anyone their true nationality.

As for the Passaportes website - I'm afraid that you'll need to do that
search the old fashioned way - diligent, line by line, page by page,
searching. Sometimes it will be quick, other times, you may never find the
record (there are gaps in the records). If you are fortunate, much info
will be had; such as: dates and places of births/baptisms, earlier family
members, etc.

I have an ancestor who was an Exposto, born in 1804. His baptism record
refers his godfather, as well as the names of the parents who raised him.
As to dates it only says that he was "exposto" the night before the
baptism. I was lucky to confirm he was the guy i was looking for because he

Re: [AZORES-Genealogy] Re: Joseph F Ramos (Sao Miguel) + Rosa F Gomes (Fayal) Marriage -1879

2015-07-01 Thread Alan Francis
Good find Eric.
Starting with your finding, I now have 2 siblings' birth records with the
Ramos surname (Joseph, Mary).
The 1900 Census shows that Joseph (born Ramos) + Rosa (Gomes) Francis had 6
children, 3 living in 1900 (Joseph, Manuel, Mary Rose). The one you found,
Mary, died in 1885.
Another child (Rose) died young. I have her death record (as Rose Francis)
but no birth record.
I have a paper copy of my grandfather Manuel's birth certificate. His name
is Manuel Francis on this document but I am suspicious because it was
issued in 1937. I find no birth record such as you found for him or Rose or
the youngest child, Mary Rose.
I can find nothing on the 6th child (deceased if the 1900 census is
accurate).
I guess this is the type of mystery about family history that keeps us
interested in finding more.
Thanks again.

You can see they were still using the Ramos surname in 1883 when daughter Mary
was born.

It took a lot of manipulation to make this record readable.

Re: [AZORES-Genealogy] Exposto Search and Surname

2015-07-01 Thread luiznoia .
There seem to be certain churches that are a center of Exposto baptisms (
Lomba, Flores in my records) and that they tend to do large batches of
them.

In a Luz, Graciosa book, there were almost 60 in a row, with ages from a
week to 4 years old.

Sometimes the parent who is raising them is named in the document, but
often not. In the case the parents are named, often padrinhos are named
too. That could track the correct Alexandre from it's use on his marriage
record.

Naming is likely the priest's choice

Elected Officials*

PALCUS sponsored its Third Meeting of Portuguese-American Elected Officials
in collaboration with the Embassy of the Republic of Portugal in the United
States and the Minister of Foreign Affairs through the Secretary of the
Portuguese Communities on June 10, 2015. Elected and appointed officials at
federal, state and local levels traveled from across the nation to meet in
Washington, D.C. to share their insights and experiences through formal
meetings and informal networking opportunities. The theme of the event was
"Voices and Experiences of Those Who Serve as Elected."

The first part of the event took place at the White House in the Eisenhower
Executive Office Building in the Indian Treaty Room where the featured
speakers were Secretary of Energy Ernest Moniz and David Simas, a policy
advisor to President Obama, both Portuguese-Americans from Massachusetts.
Secretary Moniz spoke compellingly about the President's energy strategy,

The event moved onto the U.S. Capitol where a forum hosted by Congressmen
Jim Costa (D-CA), Devin Nunes (R-CA) and David Valadão (R-CA) was moderated
by PALCUS Chairman of the Board, Fernando Rosa. A new co-chair of the
Portuguese-American Caucus, Congressman Lee Zeldin (NY) was introduced.

The spirit of trans-Atlantic collaboration was clearly communicated by the
presence and remarks of Secretary of the Communities Abroad José Cesário,
Ambassador of Portugal Nuno Brito, Deputado João Mota Amaral and several
members of the Portuguese Parliament. Ambassador Brito discussed the
significant history and ongoing connection between Portugal and the United
States while Secretary Cesário remarked that this meeting was a celebration
of the Day of Portugal in a different way.

Approximately 30 elected officials introduced themselves identifying their
office and offering brief insights into their experience as
Portuguese-Americans in public service. Participating were Congressman,
State Senators, State Representatives, Mayors and City Council Members
representing Massachusetts, Rhode Island, Connecticut, New Jersey, New
York, Virginia, California, and Washington, D.C.

This meeting was an opportunity to discuss various issues of importance to
the Portuguese-American community and to US-Portugal relations, including:

   - The efforts to maintain the Lajes Air Force Base
   - Reopening of the Synagogue in the Azores
   - The challenges faced by a female Portuguese-American to get elected to
   the state assembly
   - The experience of advancing from a Mayor to Senator
   - The impact of the support of state legislatures on Portuguese language
   education
   - The need to reach out to and encourage other Portuguese-Americans to
   public service.

After the meeting, attendees celebrated the Day of Portugal at the
residence of Ambassador Nuno Brito which included additional guests from
across the country.

Luis Matos, the first native Portuguese Associate Justice of the RI
Superior Count, was recognized and decorated by the Portuguese government
with the Order of Prince Henry the Navigator.

Re: [AZORES-Genealogy] Re: Joseph F Ramos (Sao Miguel) + Rosa F Gomes (Fayal) Marriage -1879

2015-07-01 Thread Cheri Mello
Alan F,

In spoken Portuguese, Antonio sounds like An-Tone. That's why you have that
interesting spelling. Francisco sounds kinda like Fran-Sheeshk. The final
vowel gets clipped and that syllable gets dropped, hence you get the
truncated names.

The groom's father is indeed Francisco da C. Compare to the C at the top of
the page in the word City.

Rosa's father is NOT an Antonio W. Gomes. It's probably a poorly written M
in whatever record you are reading. W doesn't exist in the Portuguese
language.

Everybody's experiences are different. My ancestors came right around 1900
and went through both WWI & WWII in America. Every generation was told
about being Portuguese. It was not big deal. It could have been English,
French, or whatnot.

https://familysearch.org/search/record/results?count=20&query=%2Bgivenname%3Arosa~%20%2Bsurname%3AGomes~%20%2Bbirth_place%3A%22azores%2C%20portugal%22~%20%2Bmarriage_place%3A%22Boston%2C%20MA%22~%20%2Bmarriage_year%3A1879-1879~%20%2Bspouse_givenname%3AJoseph~

(sorry for the long URL but the Add Link function doesn't seem to work).

I am now trying to verify what you all suspect, that my great grandparents
changed their surname to Francis. I see the surname Francis starting in the
1900 US Census so somewhere between 1879 and 1900, they must have changed
their name if this is indeed my great grandparents. I am fairly confident
that this is them. Other records I have found show Rose Gomes' father as
Atone W Gomes and Joseph Francis' father as Frank Francis. After seeing
this record, I can see where Frank came from Francisco and Atone came from
Antonio.

I don't know any of your collective backgrounds but in my case, my father
(Charles Francis Sr) told my mother never to tell anyone that he was
Portuguese. I did not find out about my Portuguese roots until I was 30,
after my father had died.I guess the family wanted to assimilated into the
anglo-American culture back in the day. Now families celebrate their
cultures. How times have changed.

What a great site. Keep up the good work. I hope I can contribute some day.
