Thanks Angelo! This confirms my suspicions. It seems Balbina and
Florianno were indeed first cousins (confirmed by research), and Balbina's
parents and Florianno's parents were also 1st cousins! Makes for a crazy

Maybe try newspapers for the time period. Sometimes there are indexes
online at least in the United States. If you have any idea of the area, try

Re: [AZORES-Genealogy] Re: Jose da Silva, b. about 1833, city?, Faial, Azores - shanghaied age 14 and brough aboad a cargo bark to Long Island, NY - Looking for any information.

2015-09-10 Thread Cheri Mello
RMac,

You can find maps of the Azores on the Azores GenWeb. http://goo.gl/k1ZDXv
(Click on Maps).

There is no place called "Sao Miguel" on Faial island. "Sao Miguel" is
another one of the Azores islands.

Never heard of anyone in the Azores having a family crest ring. Really not
sure about that at all. Most claims of "family crests" have completely
fallen apart in my research.

The Azores are an autonomous region of Portugal. They have their own
archive system and have digitized their records. You can use Tombo.pt/en to
access the records (stay in the left pane until you drill down to Faial).

You can research all 12 or 13 freguesias there on Faial and I am sure you
will find the birth of a Jose to a parent with Silva in their name. In all
of the villages. Kinda like finding a Joseph Smith in all 50 of the states.

You really need to do more research here in the U.S. to ascertain his
freguesia over there.

Re: [AZORES-Genealogy] Re: Jose da Silva, b. about 1833, city?, Faial, Azores - shanghaied age 14 and brough aboad a cargo bark to Long Island, NY - Looking for any information.

2015-09-10 Thread R Mac
Interesting information on the draft age of 14. The account he told was
that he was kidnapped and forced to work on the bark until, as his luck
would have it, the bark sank off the coast of Long Island and he made it to
shore by using a piece of the boat to float to shore (documented in local
history). But who knows, it is always possible that he wanted to avoid the
draft. He seemed to have an exceptional ability for business and
assimilating into the American culture very quickly. As far as him coming
from Lisbon, that is definitely incorrect and possibly an attempt by him to
throw off his true origins. Or it could simply be the census taker who were
generally not the best for accuracy. He did become a citizen and eventually
served in the US Navy off all things so his induction and discharge papers
prove his Azores origins. My suspicion "instinct" places him in the city of
Sao Miguel on Faial, although I have no way of proving that nor do I know
how to trace records through local parishes. Plus his name (from what I
understand) is as common as Smith here in the US.

I have all the info for the US and the families, including a picture of his
family crest ring which he wore to the US. It is on the Azores that his
information is really needed. Does anyone know if the National Archives in
Lisbon hold most genealogy records for the Azores as well - or at least
some records? Grave sites are an impossible avenue to explore on the
islands since my understanding is that many were "re-used" do to space
issues.

The Montreal Gazette has their newspaper on line free of charge. It would take
a while but you can search for a possible article that may have mentioned this
tragedy. I would also suggest that you find exactly when he died so that you
can focus on that time period when researching.

Good luck to you!

The word after Maria de Jesus is "mulher" which the literal translation

Re: [AZORES-Genealogy] Jose Ferreira De Couto (born abt. 1920 in Acores/Azores, Portugal and died accidently either in 1956 or 57 in Montreal, Canada)

2015-09-10 Thread Sonia Pacheco
Unfortunately, this search is going to be more difficult than you realize--the
first clue to this difficulty is that you're starting off with information that
just doesn't add up.

The first 2 ships to arrive in Canada did so in 1953, so Connie is either
remembering the wrong date, or he wasn't part of the original 2 voyages.

First, you need to verify the travel date. The lists of passengers for those
voyages are available and with some research, can be found.
Secondly, all of the individuals traveling in those first 2-3 years, did so
under work contracts, again where they obtained work can be sought out.

Yes, you can look in the local Montreal newspapers for a hit and run, but the
likelihood of it being listed is quite small: you don't know if he was actually
working in Montreal or in a rural farm *near* Montreal. In addition, it is well
known that a number of individuals deserted from their work contracts and
settled outside of the intended areas.

You need to confirm the date he arrived, and where he worked before you can go
any further.

I am helping Connie Couto search for her father, Jose Ferreira De Couto, who
came to Montreal, Canada in March 1954 from Acores/Azores by ship (Sao Miguel)
to work on a farm. According to Connie, he came with a friend (she cannot
remember his friend’s name) and was on the first of two ships that came to
Canada. He was one of the first of a group of Portuguese immigrants to leave
Acores/Azores.

The plan was, that he was to come to Montreal, Canada, work on a farm, set up a
home and then send for his wife, Erania Mediros De Couto who would follow with
their two daughters. Sadly, he was killed in a hit and run accident either in
August of 1956 or 1957. Subsequently his wife never made the trip either (she
died in a car accident in Acores/Azores and is buried there) but his two
daughters, Esrisanto and Connie emigrated in 1965 with their aunt.

They never found out where he was buried or what really happened to him. They
know it was in Montreal but do not know where. Connie (she is now 62) is the
only remaining living family member and would love to know what really happened
to her father, Jose and where he is buried in Montreal so she may visit his
grave. She would like to know as much about his (short-lived) life here in
Canada. She now resides in Toronto with her family.

Any pictures or information you could provide would be most welcome.

Sincerely,

2015-09-10 Thread linda
Hi R Mac,

Unfortunately, as you noted, Jose da Silva is such a common name that
unless you have additional information about him, it's unlikely you'll be
able to narrow down the search to be able to find *his* records with any
certainty.

If you have a birthdate, birth parish, or father's and/or mother's name,
then you're more likely to be able to get a lead.

There are online records from the Catholic church which are hosted by the
Regional Cultural Archives of the Azores. They are composed of collections
of jpg images-- essentially virtual books-- of the original records. They
are not searchable in the digital sense. You scan through them by eye.

you can access the records here:

or through the site that Cheri recommended:

http://tombo.pt/en

The CITCEM project has a searchable database of records for a couple of the
islands, and the records for Faial are included. The database can be
helpful, but it has errors, so the original records should be checked for
confirmation of any information discovered there. The database is also
quirky, and it's a good idea to search it in different ways to be more
certain that you haven't missed something-- at least that's my experience.

http://www.ghp.ics.uminho.pt/genealogias.html [click through till you get
to a page with flags on top, then click the British flag for English]

So, here's an example of how you might search the CITCEM records, and of
the difficulties entailed in your search:

I navigated to the page for the Parish of Pedro Miguel on Faial and typed
"silva" into the search box. Here's the result:

http://www.ghp.ics.uminho.pt/geneweb/gwd.exe?b=pedromiguel=pt=NG=silva=PN

There are 78 branches of the family listed. Using F , I find 100+
instances of the name "José". I might assume that the José I'm looking
for is one who doesn't show up in the marriage records and therefore isn't
assigned a last name [those entries look like this: "Jose ? DATE"]. If
I then narrow the candidates to the dates around 1820 to 1850ish, then
there are still a half dozen or more possible Jose's.

So, without another piece of info, there's just no way to guess which Jose
might be the Jose that you're looking for. Moreover, any of the
assumptions used in my search might be wrong-- is this the correct parish?
correct island? To make matters even worse, because of Portuguese naming
practices, your ancestor may not have taken the "da Silva" name from his
parents but from his grandparents or another relative.

The family crest ring sounds cool! But, it does sound an unlikely
possession for an average mid 19th Azorean islander. It's possible,
though, if he belonged one of the wealthier families, but then the
shanghaied story starts to fall apart-- surely they would have stolen
anything of value from him! Your Jose da Silva sounds like a marvelous
character. I hope you can find out more about his family origins. And
say, if you can, post a photo of the ring. I have some slight knowledge of
heraldry, and might be able to get a lead on it for you.

best wishes in your search,

Linda

Oh my that is so incredibly sad :(

I have an idea.

I live in Toronto and I have a contact at the Portuguese consulate. I can try
asking him?

Please give her my contact information.

remember his friend’s name) and was on the first of two ships that came to

Sincerely,

Kelley O’Rourke,

Your best bet is to find and post the marriage record of Joseph and
Catherine. Ive already looked at Familysearch for it in New York and
Massachucetts without success.
His Navy records also may have clue.

Is there any birthdate found?

Is there a photo of the family crest ring ?

I'll guess the surname is actually da Silveira back in Faial.

[AZORES-Genealogy] The 9 Azores islands

2015-09-10 Thread Cheri Mello
We have many new members now. So just to be clear, I am going to list the 9
islands of the Azores.

Santa Maria
Sao Miguel
Terceira
Graciosa
Sao Jorge
Pico
Faial (Fayal is the old spelling)
Flores
Corvo

These 9 islands are an autonomous region of Portugal. They belong to
Portugal, they speak Portuguese, they do things the way that things are
generally done in Portugal. Portugal is NOT a part of Spain. In Portugal,
they speak Portuguese and in Spain, they speak Spanish. Two different
countries and two different languages.

You know we all want to curse that census taker who could not spell our
surnames? We have to search indices various ways to find our ancestor in
the censuses and ships' lists? Makes it really hard to search, doesn't it?
Same goes here too.

When posting about your island, use the PROPER Portuguese spelling. Do NOT
use Spanish spellings. The island of San Miguel is NOT Portuguese. It's
somewhere off the coast of California. "San" is Spanish. Sao is Portuguese.

Someone will search the archive, looking for a post made about Sao Miguel
or Sao Jorge islands and won't be able to find it because the author
spelled it in Spanish. Put a post it on your computer screen with the
correct Portuguese spelling of your island please. And who knows, someone
may find a post of yours from the past and contact you!

And it's MiGuel not MiQuel. It's a G in the middle of that word, not a Q.
Same for JorGe, not JorQe. Again, it will mess up the search.

And for those who are wondering, the Madeiran islands are another
autonomous region of Portugal, but those two islands do NOT belong to the
Azores. Madeira does its own thing.

The Cape Verde islands used to belong to Portugal. They are now their own
nation.

The Canary Islands belong to Spain, as well as the Balearic islands and the
ones in the Straight of Gibraltar (I think).

So the Azores islands are just the 9 ones listed above.

RMac,
About the shanghai "story", my ancestor had a similar one.we were always
told that my great grandfather, Jose de Sousa Pereira Mancebo, born
Beira/Velas, Sao Jorge in 1838 was shanghaied when he was sent down to the dock
to buy a fish.by pirates! In truth I found him on a whaling ship as a cabin
boy at the age of 15.he stayed with the whaler for a long timefamily
story is though that he was sold into white slavery and sent to Englandno
proof of that.but in 1866 he jumped ship off the coast of New Bedford
somewhere and found a relative and had a marriage arranged and married a mail
order bride from Pico before the year was out..I believe he was avoiding
the draft.he had no hope of a future in the Azoreshe was in the middle
of 11 children with several older brothers. He made his living in New Bedford
rolling cigarsa skill he had learned in Brazil when the whaling ship was
there for an extended period..just as a side note, I've had contact by
several DNA 3rd cousins from Brazilwe have yet to find our common
ancestor..

RMac,

You can find maps of the Azores on the Azores GenWeb. http://goo.gl/k1ZDXv
(Click on Maps).

There is no place called "Sao Miguel" on Faial island. "Sao Miguel" is another
one of the Azores islands.

Never heard of anyone in the Azores having a family crest ring. Really not sure
about that at all. Most claims of "family crests" have completely fallen apart
in my research.

The Azores are an autonomous region of Portugal. They have their own archive
system and have digitized their records. You can use Tombo.pt/en to access the
records (stay in the left pane until you drill down to Faial).

You can research all 12 or 13 freguesias there on Faial and I am sure you will
find the birth of a Jose to a parent with Silva in their name. In all of the
villages. Kinda like finding a Joseph Smith in all 50 of the states.

You really need to do more research here in the U.S. to ascertain his freguesia
over there.

Hi Cheri,
I agree that I don't think the crests were any thing that were passed on in
Azores and I have not seen mention of them in any research that I have done BUT
I do remember that the first time that I went to Faial, there is a church there
that has the family crests on the ceiling. I think it is Angustias. I just
googled it as I was typing here and found this:)

How wonderful Nancy that you could piece together this wonderful story!
Sometimes genealogy can be all names and dates and we struggle to have insight
into their lives by looking at the history of volcanic eruptions or a streak of
deaths in one village giving us suspicions of some dread diseasewe read the
burial notes and add meaning to birthdates and marriage dates:) You are sooo
lucky!! Thanks for sharing that!
