Hi Barbara,

I've found that every century seems to have it's own particular
paleographic challenges. You've got the most important data from the
record already, but I hope this translation might be useful for you in
reading further records. There are probably some typos and errors, but
it's a start--

best of luck with your research,

[AZORES-Genealogy] Tweaking the fields in Family Finder on FTDNA

2015-10-06 Thread Cheri Mello
For those of you who have tested Family Finder on FTDNA (or transferred
your autosomal DNA results to FTDNA), I've asked that you add Azores
somewhere in your list. Many of your matches are not 100% Azorean. Many are
mixed. When you view your matches, you may see your matches listed as Mary
Davis, Bob Jones, etc. They don't sound Portuguese. You may look across and
see that they have Portuguese surnames. Then you'll look at their tree.
However, if you have several pages of matches, you'd have to do through
them one by one, checking to see if they have Portuguese surnames.

Then I had this idea (see the attached screen shot).

When you upload your Gedcom, it does populate your surname list. It does
NOT import the location field. I'm not crazy enough to go through every
single one of my surnames and add the locality. And I've always stressed
putting Azores. I got to thinking if there was a way to put more.

Type your island in the surname field. Type your freguesia in the location
field (in the screen shot, I should have put Name: Sao Miguel island,
Azores and in the location I should put my freguesias only).

Now, your matches can search the Ancestral Surname field by surname,
island, or freguesia. Or even Azores or Madeira or Cape Verde!

Re: [AZORES-Genealogy] the R1b Backbone Panel for the original beta price of only $79!

2015-10-06 Thread Cheri Mello
Here's the blurb from the Frequently Asked Questions on FTDNA about the
SNPs:
Why Should I Test Y-DNA SNPs?

A Y-DNA SNP
test
determines
your Y-DNA haplogroup
.
Knowing how you connect to other people on the Y-tree can help narrow
*geographical
origins* and can potentially confirm specific *genealogical connections*.
We encourage you to test as many SNPs as possible for the most rewarding
experience. Learn more about our SNP Packs below to get the best deal on
SNP testing.

Testing Y-DNA SNP markers places you further down the branch on the Y-DNA
haplotree and assists us with scientific research on the Y-tree and for
your haplogroup projects. The more people that test their SNPs, the more
data points we have to further our understanding of human migration and
history. More importantly to you is that SNPs may help in your genealogy
and deep ancestry research.

If you are interested in your ancestry that goes beyond where
traditional paper trails end, you should focus on SNP testing. (NOTE from
Cheri: This means more anthropological in nature).

...SNPs offer a definitive answer to a potential relationship. When one
person is positive (derived) for an SNP and the other person is negative
(ancestral) for the same SNP, they are not related in genealogical
times.(NOTE from Cheri: As our Y-DNA results build and we get many men
matching each other, we will be able to tell is they should test out to
Y-111 or not based on their SNP testing).

Re: [AZORES-Genealogy] the R1b Backbone Panel for the original beta price of only $79!

2015-10-06 Thread Cheri Mello
R1b is the most common European haplogroup for males. The current
nomenclature is R-M269. Within that very large group is another subgroup,
who are the most common of the most common. That's the Western Atlantic
Modal Haplotype or WAMH.

What this Backbone panel is going to do is to refine and break these
subgroups down on the tree of mankind. So instead of being R-M269, you
could be R-P312, R-S1051, R-L21, etc.

So that means at Thanksgiving you can say that you're no longer R-M269, but
R-. Everyone's eyes will glaze over like they have had too much turkey!

All joking aside though...no, it's not going to help with your genealogy
per se. It really more anthropological in nature. At least at this time.
There is a thought that there may be familial SNPs. This science is pretty
new. I don't think that means that there's a Mello SNP, a Barbosa SNP, an
Avelar SNP. I think it may mean that there's a SNP that the Mello & Barbosa
families descend from, for example. It's still a developing science and
they are making discoveries. No one has a crystal ball to say what the end
result is.

I think they are advertising 135 for SNPs in a package for $79 instead of
$99. Normally, it $39 per SNP. So to order 135 SNPs would be a few thousand
dollars.

So if you have the extra $79 and are willing to contribute your Y-DNA (or
the Y-DNA of the male you tested) to this growing science, do it! Just
understand that you're not getting genealogy out of it a this time. You may
be leaving a legacy for the future!
