Re: [AZORES-Genealogy] Returning Home to Azores from US
Jeremy, there are US Passport applications that would cover that time period going out of the US. There are films available from the Family History Library that should have his application since you say he was naturalized. If you can find one for him it should tell you when he was leaving and for what reason. If he left prior to 1925 or so I think that they should be on film. Re: [AZORES-Genealogy] Returning Home to Azores from US
Jeremy, There is no emigration OUT of the U.S. I don't believe there's anything going INTO the Azores (you should state Azores as many are researching the Hawaiian islands too). You don't give a date for his American passport. In the U.S. there's film up to 1925 and then you have to write to the passport office for after 1925. You MUST include his death certificate. Here's the information from the Azores GenWeb. I haven't had to write for someone's passport for a long time, so no guarantee the URL will work. [AZORES-Genealogy] Returning Home to Azores from US
Hello! I have a great uncle who came to this country in 1899 or 1900. I find no passport on Terceira, nor on Horta, but that's not the issue I'm having. I know he had a daughter born in 1899 in the Islands to his wife Maria. He was in California for the 1910 cencus, and I believe he probably went back home soon thereafter. While he was here, he was naturalized. So he ended up dying at home in Faja dos Cubres (Ribeira Seca) on Sao Jorge in 1933. Daughter is still living and had married, and his wife is completely different so im sure the first wife died. I am trying to figure out when he DEPARTED and arrived in the Islands.. a reverse of the usual. Unfortunately even though I have his departmental passport number, they (the gov) refuse to service my request for copies since it was from the late twenties (just a few thousand after what ancestry has) and apparently just within privacy laws. They told me it won't be available for some time, and I can't get copies unless I am the person named on the passport. (Real intellectually since he was born in 1879 and died over 80 years ago). Does anyone have any suggestions as to where I may find the date he arrived in the azores? If anyone has anything on a Paula Munoz in their databases please let me know (with such a unique name). She was the second wife who id love to know of. His name was Antonio Machado Cardoza. The daughter was Maria who married a man named Costa and moved to the village of Calheta. If Joaquim was a naturalized US citizen, then I suspect that his wife would have traveled under his passport, and so she may not show up in the passport records. Hi all I know they were both born the in the Azores. We have, very elderly, living relatives who confirm this. Anecdotally we also know that Joaquim and Maria's families were very unhappy about their marriage and so they came to America very soon thereafter. I have Joaquim ("King" as he's now called) on the 2010 census here with his wife and children. He dies in 1913. I also have the birth certificates etc of his children (all born the in the US). However, yes on the passenger manifest it does say they're US citizens and that Joaquim immigrated as a young child (clearly I have a lot of digging to do here). I also now have the DNA link to Joaquim's sister and parents (most likely). On Mon, Dec 5, 2016 at 8:53 PM, Cheri Mello wrote: > Linda, > OK, thanks for explaining how he morphed into Antonio. Now that there's a potential marriage record for Maria Josefa and Antonio which states that she is a native of the parish of Santa Luzia, it's possible to check the Baptisms there to see if the birthdays for your Maria Josefa and that of the Maria in the records match. I had a look through late September through to the end of 1886, but none of the Marias in that year were likely matches. So, I went back a year to 1885 and found this record: http://culturacores.azores.gov.pt/biblioteca_digital/TER-AH- SANTALUZIA-B-1880-1885/TER-AH-SANTALUZIA-B-1880-1885_item1/P193.html http://culturacores.azores.gov.pt/biblioteca_digital/TER-AH- SANTALUZIA-B-1880-1885/TER-AH-SANTALUZIA-B-1880-1885_item1/P194.html That's the baptismal record for the Maria of the marriage record. It seems that she shares the same birthday, October 6, as your husband's grandmother. :D You should try to find the couple's passport records. With luck and persistence, you'll be able to take your husband's Azorean tree back to the 18th and 17th centuries through the primary records :) and maybe even farther back. Please have a look at the resources that Roselyn provided a link to. I'd also suggest that you try transcribing these marriage and baptismal records and use the word lists in the resources to pick out the key information they contain. The records follow a set format, and once you get familiar with it, it's easy (provided the handwriting is legible). If you post your results, I'll gladly check them for you. Also, you should know that there's a marriage index for Terceira which is online somewhere. I don't have the link for it handy, but a search of the forum should get it pretty quickly. For the island

Linda, OK, thanks for explaining how he morphed into Antonio. Yeah, the manifest on Joaquim is the first thing I looked up because I wanted to see what the columns said on the right, but since they were U.S. Citizens, they did not need to say who they were coming to in America. Samantha knows this, as she has stated she has found everything in America and nothing tells her where in the Azores. I guess nothing will state where they are born in the Azores if they are American born. So I don't understand her query. RE: [AZORES-Genealogy] Hello :) New here and a little lost (Researching husband's family)
Hi Samantha, Some suggestions re more US searching. Fellow group members have found promising leads for you. You can now try to fact check via US resources to see if the data corresponds with/supports these new findings. *On the Passenger List, go to the far right column and see if there is information about the destination, which could include more family members. My grandmother’s info said they were going to stay with her mother’s sister, gave the name and street address. *Check the US Censuses for more clues. 1910 included M1 (or 2, etc) and #yrs married; when to US and the status (Al, Pa, Na), #children b/living (could verify the known births and/or hint at additional children who d young); 1920 asks yr immigrated/status; 1930 asks age at 1st marriage, yr immigrated/status. *WWI Draft Registration would have age, birthdate *WWII Draft Registration includes age, place of birth *Naturalization Papers (Petition and Declaration of Intention) can be verrry helpful. My grandfather’s 1926 papers listed my grandmother and all of their living children/ages as well as his birth location. My grandmother’s 1942 papers gave details of my grandfather (birth date, place; his arrival information and date of naturalization). Also names of all of her children, with their birthdates and where they were living in 1942; her exact birth location in the Azores, where she sailed from, where/when she arrived. *Explore birth, marriage, death records in the US for additional information. Perhaps more challenging is finding US baptismal records. *Try newspaper searches. Some are on ancestry.com, newspapers.com, genealogybank.com . The different sites have different area papers. *Try searches for the maybe cousin in the US. Re: [AZORES-Genealogy] Hello :) New here and a little lost (Researching husband's family)
Evening Rose Thanks for the links and the way to get to them. I was searching tombo.pt but in all the wrong places (I am such a noob). I will definitely continue searching for their passport documents too. :) Can I ask how you found them so quickly. It really was just minutes from me posting it seems. You're (all) full of wonderful magic here. I do have amazing news. I've also been speaking to a person at ancestry who is a DNA match with my husband. Once I showed her the marriage information she identified the common ancestor from her tree (Joaquim's sister, of whom I knew nothing). She has all of the the documentation for Joaquim's parents. I am soo excited and I could not have found this without you here. Thank you hugely!!! Hi Cheri, I've just attempted to send three coupons to you. All three should be via last name "Meneses". Re: [AZORES-Genealogy] Hello :) New here and a little lost (Researching husband's family)
Hi Samantha, Please keep in mind Roselyn's advice, and please also take care to verify any information you find in online trees by checking the digital records. We're so lucky to have these resources, but as you've probably already guessed, last names aren't exactly fixed. First names are a little better, but... well, there are often multiples of the same name in one family-- daughters named for their mothers/grandmothers, sons named for their fathers/grandfathers, and multiple sisters all named Maria [second name] is very common-- I have even seen a case of two brothers both named Manuel. Anyway, online errors abound and the names will drive you mad You posted a birthday for Maria Josefa, October 6, 1886. So, I went back a year to 1885 and found this record: http://culturacores.azores.gov.pt/biblioteca_digital/TER-AH-SANTALUZIA-B-1880-1885/TER-AH-SANTALUZIA-B-1880-1885_item1/P193.html http://culturacores.azores.gov.pt/biblioteca_digital/TER-AH-SANTALUZIA-B-1880-1885/TER-AH-SANTALUZIA-B-1880-1885_item1/P194.html That's the baptismal record for the Maria of the marriage record. It seems that she shares the same birthday, October 6, as your husband's grandmother. :D You should try to find the couple's passport records. That would be the conclusive proof that it's the same pair that emigrated to the US. Right, now you've got a wonderful quest ahead of you! For the island of Pico, there's another handy resource, the CITCEM database. It's clunky to use, riddled with errors, and has a bit of a learning curve... but when it works, it's wonderful :D I believe the link is in the resources too. best of luck in your research! According to the marriage record Victoria is from Agua Retorto as is her parents. I would look for the marriage of her parents in Agua Retorto and then look for her baptism after I found the parents' marriage in the same place. [AZORES-Genealogy] Re: Family Tree DNA Sale - Week 4 - Coupon codes
(Cross posted to Azores, Madeira, and IslandRoutes) To Whomever is sending me the coupons (Thanks), but please put in the KIT NAME, not my name. If your coupon gets used, you get a Bonus Reward coupon. If Rosemarie Capodicci sent me her coupon and I give it to someone else, Rosemarie will have a bonus coupon. I can email her and ask her to check it. If the coupon is coming from "Cheri Mello" I really have no idea whose kit it is. If I give it away, great, but I don't know who to contact for the Bonus coupon. In case anyone missed it, here are the instructions again. Thanks! For existing members...Please LOG IN to your kit, and click on the Holiday Reward button. If you are not interested in that coupon, please click the green SHARE NOW button, put in the kit name, and forward it to me at gfscherim at gmail.com Cheri Mello Listowner, Azores-Gen Researching: São Miguel island: Vila Franca, Ponta Garca, Ribeira Quente, Ribeira das Tainhas, Achada On Mon, Dec 5, 2016 at 7:18 AM, Cheri Mello wrote: > (Cross posted to Azores, Madeira, and Island Routes) > > Week 4 of Family Tree DNA (FTDNA)'s Holiday Sale! > > For existing members...Please LOG IN to your kit, and click on the Holiday > Reward button. They sailed from "St Michaels: on 3/19/1906 on the SS Brooklyn. There were no other family members with them on the ship that I can see. All of their children were born in the US. I've started going through the March 1906 passport records for Ponta Delgada hoping to find their names. I'll go forward a bit and look at the whole of March for that year and back to the start of the year. Joachim may also have had a cousin Maria Correa (Coria, Corea, Cory) who also came to the US about the same time. She was born in the Azores on 12/23/1896.
