opposite the name Anto Pera da Cunha

Could you please check my translation of the names and let me know if you
can figure out the name of the town, which I could not.

[AZORES-Genealogy] Re: Azores Visit

2017-02-27 Thread Sue Q
Hi, Ken
That's wonderful that you're going. I was in Graciosa in 2013 and
absolutely loved it. It's beautiful and relaxing. I hope to go again this
summer, as well as to other islands. We flew from Lisbon on TAP and then
also flew from Graciosa to Faial. One of the most exciting things was to go
to the Matriz de Santa Cruz da Graciosa and see where so many of my
ancestors were baptized and married. I have Silvas in my line, mostly from
the Fontes area of Santa Cruz. I have traced them back to the 1700s and
would be glad to share any information I have. The names are: Maria Candida
Pereira da Silva (great-grandmother) and then: José Pereira da Silva and
wife Maria Candida, Antonio Pereira da Silva and wife Antonia Rosa from
whom I believe the Silva name originates. Her father was Caetano de Sousa
da Silva and his wife was Dona Maria do Santo Antonio. I don't know of any
current relations there but would be glad to share anything else. Sue

[AZORES-Genealogy] ENOS/ENES VARGAS CONCORD, CA

2017-02-27 Thread Sami

I am looking for any information on *John ENOS (VARGAS)* born abt.1841;
immigrated either in 1860 or 1868, lived in Concord, Contra Costa County,
CA and was a farmer; and a woman named *Emma VARGAS*. They were married
about 1870. I don't know where but I sure wish I did so I could get their
marriage certificate. They had 14 children; 13 living. I could not find
them in any census reports prior to the 1900, so I am missing 3 of their
children. These are the ones I do know:

*Joseph* b. abt. 1873
*Mary L. (DUTRA)* b.1874 d. 1957 of Concord

*Emma (my great-grandmother) *b.12 Jul 1880 d. 30 Sep 1957 in Santa Clara
*Annie* b. abt. 1882
*Theresa (NUNES)* b.1885 d. 1968 of Concord
*Manuel* b. abt. 1886
*Frank* b. abt. 1887 of Concord
*Angie (MESQUITA)* b.1889 d. 1972 in Hayward
*Aggie (Agnes) (BENZ)* b.1892 d. 1980
*Evelyn (MCDERMOTT)* b.1897 d.1966 in Marin Co.

There is a story circulating in Ancestry about a John Enos Vargas born in
1838...but I cannot reconcile the information about this man with my John.
I lost this couple after the 1910 census, but found a man by the same name
in the 1920 census living as a lodger in the Clyde Hotel, married, but no
Emma. Then I found a woman with the same name, married, in another 1920
census living as an "inmate" in the Napa State Hospital. This could
possibly explain why they are not together in a census after the 1910.
There is also a Find A Grave entry on a couple with the same names who died
in 1923 and 1928, and are buried in St. Stephen's in Concord. They farmed
for years in Concord, so this too is plausible, but I am not sure if these
are my John and Emma. Any information anyone has regarding these two will
be greatly appreciated! Thanks so much!

Re: [AZORES-Genealogy] Gauldencio NAME

2017-02-27 Thread Cheri Mello
It's a saint's name. Google "saint gaudencio" and read up on all the St.
Gaudencios. I would pay particular attention to their birth dates and feast
days and cross reference that with your Gaudencio. It won't help you with
your genealogy per se, but it might help as what month your guy may have
been born in. Or not. Maybe someone prayed to St. Gaudencio because he's
the patron saint of ___. Once you know about that, you can save it in
case it comes in handy for a history assignment or something!

[AZORES-Genealogy] Mysterious Terra Family From Pico

2017-02-27 Thread 'Jeremy G. B-C' via Azores Genealogy
Mysterious Terra Family From Pico

Hello!

I have 3 immigrant ancetors from the Azores, I have been successful in trading
the lineage of two of them in Sao Jorge. The third, my grandmother, came from
Pico and is a complete mystery - which is truly unbelivable given the abnormal
names of her brothers, and the extent of the info we Do have.  Just can't seem
to find any records on Pico whatsoever for them.

My grandmother's name was Maria Emilia Rosa da Terra. She was born somewhere on
Pico in or about April/May 1854-1860.  Most records give April 22nd 1855.
, but 1858 is prevelant too.  She came to the United States in the early to mid
1870s settling in California.

She had two brothers named Augusto Garcia Terra and Gauldencio Garcia Terra.
Gauldencio married in Massachusetts in 1873, Augusto never married. Both
brothers had made it to California by 1879 where they were Naturalized in San
Luis Obispo. They were whalers.

Our working hypothesis is that they may have originated in the Santa Lucia or
Bandeiras area.  They were FULL siblings.

The parents were Joao Garcia de Terra and Maria Rosa. NOT Manuel and Maria as
one record for Gaudencio falsely states.

#) Gauldencio or Gaudencio "Gaides" (various spellings) Garcia Terra was born
approx. NOVEMBER 1838-1840. He died in 1916 in SLO County CA.

#) Augusto Garcia Terra was born in abt. 1852, and died in 1929 in SLO CA.

#) Maria was born about April 1854-1860 and died in SLO County CA in 1942. Her
married name was Reis.

We have an extraordinary amount of information, and documentation on them in
the United States, but nothing from Pico.

If anyone can render ANY assistance, it would be gratefully appreciated.  Also
if anyone has the name Gauldencio or Gauldencio or Augusto or Joao Garcia Terra
in their databases I would be interested to know!

Thank you

Jeremy
