The parish of S. Nicolau-Sete Cidades is a relatively new creation. The current 
parish was once divided in parts to the surrounding parish, i.e. Bretanha, 
Mosteiros, Ginetes, etc., depending on the time period.

[AZORES-Genealogy] Some Thoughts on Ethnicity Estimates

I have noticed that there are a lot of questions on the Ethnicity Estimates
from the new comparisons from Family Tree DNA.  These estimates are mostly
hidden in our physical characteristics. When we start to mix things up
persons of the same parentage get different amounts or characteristics. For
example my mother has brown eyes and red hair my father had blue grey eyes
and dark hair. My older sister had brown eyes and light brown hair. I have
green eyes and dark hair, my brother has blue grey eyes and light curly
hair.  So it goes with these Ethnicity Estimates. I show more Iberian than
my sister and so on.  Remember the Azores were settled by not only people
from Spain and Portugal but many other parts of Europe and the world so I
would expect no different results than what we are seeing.

I will try those churches. My dad came from Sete Cidades and I want to 
start working backwards, the church is the best place to start.

What is your father's date of birth birth? Do you know the name of his parents? 
The best place to start might be the Civil Registry in Ponta Delgada if your 
father was born less than 100 years ago.

I am concerned for the legacy of the books... That is why I bothered to carry 
them to Salt Lake to be microfilmed. That makes me feel good to know if someone 
really searches, they will find them!

I offered to take them to Salt Lake for John. Salt Lake can microfilm or
digitize them and make them available to anyone, anywhere in the world with
a computer. However, John would rather that they go to the Freitas or

I found them! Ancestry had a Massachusetts Passenger and Crew Lists, 
1820-1963. The names and some ages were messed up, but my guess is that 
whoever met them in Boston getting off the ship didn't understand them?

Steven Morse has no outbound passenger lists from the Azores. The only
thing we have from the Azores to America (Brazil, etc) is the passaportes
lists. Sami specified outbound lists. That's just passaportes.

Mara, here are the names as I know them: Father is Jose de Vargas Dias, a 
widow from Feteira. His children are Francisco (who wasn't listed), two 
daughters named Maria, two named Rosa, a daughter named Filomena, and the 
youngest son named Joao. I found the record on Ancestry that lists them 
coming off the ship Maria da Gloria in August of 1868. The names there are: 
Jose, Maria M, Maria Gloria, Filomena, Roza Isabel, and Joao.

I would like to repost the below, in case anyone new may see it this time. 
 In addition, I would like to add that Gaudencio's daughter's oral history 
indicates he was born in Santa Luzia... with a name like his one would not 
think it would be so hard to find!  Our "Terra" DNA matches have been 
contacted, and I am consistently being told that their lineage is in 
Bandeiras /and or/ Santa Luzia.

[AZORES-Genealogy] Interesting Baptism

[Sami]

In looking for family members, I found this baptism record on CITCEM. I 
find it interesting that it appears the baby was baptized in utero...the 
baptism date is before the birth! Did the priest make a mistake entering 
the information or was this some odd circumstance? There is a "NOTA" at the 
bottom- could someone please translate? I'm thinking it holds a possible 
explanation.

addition, I would like to add that Gaudencio's daughter's oral history 
indicates he was born in Santa Luzia... with a name like his one would not 
think it would be so hard to find!  Our "Terra" DNA matches have been 
contacted, and I am consistently being told that their lineage is in Bandeiras 
/and or/ Santa Luzia.

Hello!

I have 3 immigrant ancetors from the Azores, I have been successful in trading 
the lineage of two of them in Sao Jorge. The third, my grandmother, came from 
Pico and is a complete mystery - which is truly unbelivable given the abnormal 
names of her brothers, and the extent of the info we Do have.  Just can't seem 
to find any records on Pico whatsoever for them.

My grandmother's name was Maria Emilia Rosa da Terra. She was born somewhere on 
Pico in or about April/May 1854-1860.  Most records give April 22nd 1855.
, but 1858 is prevelant too.  She came to the United States in the early to mid 
1870s settling in California.

She had two brothers named Augusto Garcia Terra and Gauldencio Garcia Terra. 
Gauldencio married in Massachusetts in 1873, Augusto never married. Both 
brothers had made it to California by 1879 where they were Naturalized in San 
Luis Obispo. They were whalers.

Our working hypothesis is that they may have originated in the Santa Lucia or 
Bandeiras area.  They were FULL siblings.

The parents were Joao Garcia de Terra and Maria Rosa. NOT Manuel and Maria as 
one record for Gaudencio falsely states.

#) Gauldencio or Gaudencio "Gaides" (various spellings) Garcia Terra was born 
approx. NOVEMBER 1838-1840. He died in 1916 in SLO County CA.

#) Augusto Garcia Terra was born in abt. 1852, and died in 1929 in SLO CA.

#) Maria was born about April 1854-1860 and died in SLO County CA in 1942. Her 
married name was Reis.

We have an extraordinary amount of information, and documentation on them in 
the United States, but nothing from Pico.

If anyone can render ANY assistance, it would be gratefully appreciated.  Also 
if anyone has the name Gauldencio or Gauldencio or Augusto or Joao Garcia Terra 
in their databases I would be interested to know!

Born 16  Jan 1842 and baptized (urgent) at home by the maternal grandfather
(with the holy oils) on 18th of the said month and year.

The priest had it right. The college students were flirting and not

ilhas do Pico e Faial. you can try to find the names of Maria Emilia and is
