Hi all,

Not sure if you're all aware but I just found out that Al Gore is of Azorean
decent. 8th great grandfather was surname Medeiros from the Azores.

You probably already knew...lol. I just found this out and was fascinated. For
such a small group of islands Azorean descendants most certainly have had major
impact in this great big world of ours.

[AZORES-Genealogy] Military flights to Lajes Air For e in Terceira

2017-06-09 Thread Maria Lima
Has anyone been able to use the military flights to Lajes Air Field in
Terceira? They leave from New Jersey. Were traveling on east coast and called
to see if we could get on a flight but have to wait 72 hrs till they get the
schedule. Since we're already out this way, we hoped we could. We were
already planning to visit the Azores for our 50th anniversary while we can
still be "healthy" enough to do it. Not sure if it will pan out.

If we can get there, I'll let you know our experience in case someone else is
interested in doing this.

Best to all,
Maria Elena

just wondering if someone on the list has used it and what their experience

Re: [AZORES-Genealogy] Ancestry request

2017-06-09 Thread pat_frade
Rosemarie, you will have to show me in August when we meet. They may have
digital copies, but I do not know if they are searchable. I haven't had the
time to do any, but I know people who volunteer. They get a file, say 20-30
names at a time, and they read the record and on another screen they type
in names, dates, places on this form, which they submit, and that makes it
searchable. So then someone like me can go to ancestry and type in Frade
Manuel and it will bring up everyone with that name. I bet we could get
someone from the FHL to show the group. I think it you saw the potential
you might be amazed. I believe they are trying to make all records more
accessible for people, especially to those who can't read the language.

Re: [AZORES-Genealogy] Ancestry request

2017-06-09 Thread Rosemarie Capodicci
Pat,
That is not going to happen with the records of the Azores. They have
to many abbreviations and if you are not familiar with the
abbreviations, you will never transcribe the records correctly. I can't see
SLC ever being able to index them. It really needs to be done by someone in
the Azores who knows the names and abbreviations etc. The people who are
trying to extract all of the marriage records of Sao Jorge are having that
problem now. They are doing okay but need to have about 4 people to verify
and then we still have trouble with some. Anyway, are you planning on
coming with us to SLC or just visiting? Would love to see you!

[AZORES-Genealogy] Re: Shared CenitMorgan Project (for those who have DNA tested)

2017-06-09 Thread IslandRoutes
I entered all my known matches both sides of the tree. It's really easy to
do, by the way!

Just a tip...if you are trying to get the information for your matches on
GEDMatch.com, the easiest way is through the "one to one compare" tool.

[AZORES-Genealogy] Hawaii, early 20th century: George Cunha

2017-06-09 Thread João Macdonald

Greetings to everybody.

I'm researching swimmer (Healani Club) and surfer George Cunha (Honolulu,
1894 - Ridley Park, PA 1969), of Azorian extraction, son of Francisco A.
Cunha (?, 1849 - Honolulu, 1909) and Zaida Cunha (Honolulu, 1868 -
Honolulu, 1913), brother of Lawrence, Frank, Walter, Allen and Evelyn. He
was a friend and sports companion of Duke Kahanamoku.

I've already collected a great deal of information on him and his family
from newspapers and census records. I believe he didn't have children. I
was wondering if someone is aware of any descendants from his siblings
side, still living.

Thank you for your help.

I have traveled stand-by in the past but not to the Acores. I know you are
required to have a ID from the military and in the case of traveling overseas
you need a passport. You can find some more information here
http://www.amc.af.mil/Home/AMC-Travel-Site/ It is an adventurous way to travel

One of the benefits of being retired from the military is that you and your
dependents can travel Space-A. In other words if there is still empty seats
after the active duty members are boarded the they will fill the aircraft with
retirees. Civilians/non retirees are not eligible.

Re: [AZORES-Genealogy] Travel to Pico in August

2017-06-09 Thread 'Susan Murphy' via Azores Genealogy
II haven't done this but know others that have taken some other carrier like
Virgin to Boston and then take Azores/SATA to Sao Miguel... Then do an inter
island from Sao Miguel to Pico etc. I just watched Ron de Silva on Facebook do
this. He was going to Flores and weather conditions there delayed him a day
once he got to Sao Miguel.

I'm thinking of doing that next time I go. Or I'm even thinking of taking some
other airline to Portugal and then flying back to the Azores. I see that
Ryanair is going to the Azores now but have not heard of anyone going. The
reason I'm thinking of trying to minimize my time with SATA is that I've had
more delays Hours to overnights! Than I have had regular flights.

It's luck of the draw with Sata!!

Re: [AZORES-Genealogy] Travel to Pico in August

2017-06-09 Thread E. Sharp
Thanks for reminding me Susan. We have taken Ryanair lots of time within
Europe. It is a low cost carrier but you have to pay for extras. Never had a
problem with them. Might just fly to London and do that. I think they might
also do Lisbon to SM. Need to check it out. Spend a couple of days in SM and
then to Pico. I also want to go to Flores. And then visit with my cousins in
Lisbon. Like I said...all I have to do is convince the other half. Maybe I can
bribe him with a side trip to the Isle
Of Wight.

Re: [AZORES-Genealogy] Military flights to Lajes Air For e in Terceira

2017-06-09 Thread bsei2816
I have travelled Space-A many times but not since 1999. I have flown into
Lajes from Charleston Air Force Base (AFB), SC, McGuire AFB, NJ, Dover AFB,
Baltimore/Washington airport (BWI), and Philadelphia IAP. As Rick said, to
do it you must be active duty or retired military or their accompanying
family members. There was a nominal fee of about $10 on a military
aircraft or $15 on a military-contracted commercial aircraft. This is very
cheap but risky. If there are no flights or seats available one could get
stuck somewhere so always make sure to have funds for commercial tickets if
needed. I do believe the current scheduled military passenger service to
Lajes Air Base departs McGuire AFB, NJ on flights that originate at BWI.
The site that Rick provided a link for has links to all of the major
military passenger terminals that you might find some schedule
information.

2017-06-09 Thread Google User
Have any of you already been to Pico?

I have an old buddy who went and said you have to take another boat or a
small plane from San Miguel. If so, would it be in my best interest to rent
a vehicle when there, hire a driver, or bring a folding bike to get around
( I'm an avid biker and can deal with rolling hills a plenty )
