Re: [AZORES-Genealogy] Has anyone upgraded old FTM 16 to newMcKiev

2017-07-26 Thread Nancy Couto
Pam, it's my understanding that if you purchased Mac 3.1 (a Software
MacKiev product) you can download FTM 2017 for free. I was using Mac 3.0
(still an Ancestry product) and had to pay about $29 for 2017, which, as
software goes, is a bargain. Why not check it out. If you can get 2017 for
free, you have nothing to lose. For what it's worth, I like it! There are
some new features, like color coding, which allows you to assign colors to
each of your family lines--or assign the colors any way you like. Syncing
with Ancestry can be problematic, but I think the problem is on Ancestry's
side. With 2017, you can sync more than one tree, and that works out great
for me.

Re: [AZORES-Genealogy] Has anyone upgraded old FTM 16 to newMcKiev

2017-07-26 Thread Dennis Marshall

I also upgraded to FTM 2017 from 2014 without any issues installing and
converting existing trees…...until yesterday. Uploading my larger trees to
Ancestry would repeatedly time out, only partially completed, and the screen
displayed a request to send an error report to tech support. When I contacted
tech support I was told that the “first" time you sync your tree data, there is
a 1gB data limit. With larger trees, your media files can easily surpass this
limit.I was told to detach media files from my tree by moving them to
another document file temporarily. Then upload just the tree data and once the
initial upload was successful, just add the media back to the tree and
subsequent uploads should proceed without the 1 gB restriction. Thereafter you
can upload your media files as needed in the future in your sync procedures. I
don’t recall seeing this 1 gB restriction rule before, but I could have easily
missed it.

FYI...I have not been able to complete this procedure today as there is a
warning alert concerning connection interruptions today at the Ancestry site
and they recommend waiting until it’s resolved hopefully today sometime. By the
way, I am running on Windows 10.

Hope this can be of some help other FTM users should they stumble with syncing
their trees

And otherwise, I find the FTM 2017 to be a nice improvement over my 2014
version. It seems a bit faster, although that’s subjective on my part. As I
spend more time on the program, there may be other useful upgrades, but I
wasn’t at all dissatisfied with my old FTM 2014 really. Also I find that it’s
convenient to have both Ancestry hints as well as Family search hints
populating your trees since I did not have that function previously.

2017-07-26 Thread gs311
The trial time is over. They have gone on line. I've had no problems
downloading the 2017 version of FTM and syncing it with Ancestry although I've
become An FTM fan. I think it's more accurate in the relationships window and
much faster all around

Re: [AZORES-Genealogy] Re: Has anyone upgraded old FTM 16 to newMcKiev

2017-07-26 Thread JR
I guess you are right Cheri, there is no trial period for FTM. I made
assumption that they all had trial periods, but I don't see it either.
Sorry about that. It looks like they are moving to system that periodically
checks to see if you have legitimate copy of their software. Not a big
deal. I bought Version 2014 for about 40$ Canadian (about 30$ American),
before they released Version 2017. I now have both and quite frankly can't
see any difference except the ability to interface with Ancestry.com. So if
you have version 2014 and don't need to interact with Ancestry, don't waste
your money. The cost is quite high for the new version, 115$.

RE: [AZORES-Genealogy] Re: Has anyone upgraded old FTM 16 to newMcKiev

2017-07-26 Thread Michael Gilfilian
I’m trying the 2017 upgrade and it didn’t bring my media either when I synced
it with ancestry, but I still 2014 on a separate hard drive so I can still use
it.

Why don't you just try the trial version. Then if doesn't work, don't buy it. I
bought the 2014 version and see no difference with the 2017 version.
Apparently, the big deal is interfacing with Ancestry.com and getting that
feature to work. I don't use ancestry, so it is necessary to update at all from
2014.  Version 2014 works with Windows 7 and 10.

I haven't purchased 2017 if it doesn't transfer it over I would extremely upset
way way to many records to link to the individuals

I upgraded. You can install FTM 2014 without deinstalling Ver 16. They run
independently and you can run both at same time. Just save your files to your
computer or flash drive. Then install 2014. Go to import and select files from
your flash drive.
I much prefer Ver. 16. Much better interface and easier to navigate. I am
running Ver 16, though it is somewhat slower.

Go to windows button and click, click Computer on right side, click system
properties, now look under system properties and it will show your "system
type". It is probably 32 bit operating system. If it is 64 bit, this will be
the source of any problems because Ver. 16 was designed to run on 32 bit
system. However, I still use it anyway.

As long as you can saving your files in at least two places; say your computer
and a flashdrive; Two flash drives if you really want to be safe. Two 4 gig
flashdrives is all you need and they are fairly cheap.
