Ok Thanks. I did just have Sao Joao, Pico, Azores. But some new stuff started
popping up that had Lajes in there so I thought I was doing something wrong
I’m sticking with my way

Re: [AZORES-Genealogy] Help reading Altares record

2019-06-25 Thread Ângela Loura
Hi Sam,

Last names derived from animals, places, nicknames or food are pretty
common all over Portugal, and Coelho is defintelly one of them. But as
Cheri said, not at the level of Silva, for example.

Re: [AZORES-Genealogy] Translation help Costa Pimental families

2019-06-25 Thread Mary Pimentel Wheeler
Hello Janet and others,

Is it possible that your Jerome Sebastian Pimentel was originally named
Jacinto Pimentel? I found a Jacinto baptized in Fajazinha on, I believe,
November 1 1855. Here is the link and what I understand it to read.
Please chime in if you see it saying something else. If this is him,
knowing how he got the Sebastian middle name would be interesting to find
out, but at least now we would have his parent's names.

http://www.culturacores.azores.gov.pt/biblioteca_digital/FLR-LF-FAJAZINHA-B-1850-1860/FLR-LF-FAJAZINHA-B-1850-1860_item1/P72.html

Jacinto, son of Anthony Joze Pimentel and Anna de Jesus.
Born on the (?) of October and baptized on the first day of November.
Paternal grandparents are Antonio Joze Pimentel and Anna de Conceicao
Maternal grandparents Manuel de Freitas and Anna de Freitas

[AZORES-Genealogy] Re: Help with short form of surnames

2019-06-25 Thread JR
It's Glz (Gonsalves), though it does look like Gtz. Same with Alz
(Alvares), sometimes looks like Atz. Or Miz (Martins) sometimes looks like
Mtz. It may be priest's way of indicating short forms.

Hi Liz, A few people do the district. Most do not, as it becomes confusing
really quickly. I would do Sao Joao (or São João if you prefer) which is
the freguesia (village), Pico (the island), Azores. You can add in Portugal
if you like. I figure anyone looking at my research 50 years from now would
know they are looking at my Portuguese branches. Cheri

2019-06-25 Thread Liz Migliori
If someone is born in Sao Joao, Pico

Should it be written in a tree as
Sao Joao, Lajes Do Pico,

Is Sao Joao a town in the district or a small village in the bigger town of
Lajes?

[AZORES-Genealogy] Help with short form of surnames

2019-06-25 Thread Leonor Bertoni
Hi there,
I've checked the list of short forms for names but was not successful with
these names. First record, I think the father's first name is Pedro (Po)
and everyone's last name, except the godmother, is Fernandes. I cannot
figure out what the godmother's last name is, it looks like Miz.
