Dear Listers,

I want to inform that I have completed the genealogy of Norte Grande. Those
interested in records from this village please contact me privatl
Other villages completed:al
.
In São Jorge Island: Norte Pequeno and Ribeira Seca

In Terceira Island: Ribeirinha, Feteira, Porto Judeu, São Sebastião, Fonte do
Bastardo, Cabo da Praia, Fontinhas, Agualva, Quatro Ribeiras, and São Mateus.

This research covers the records from 1911 back to the early records of the
village, plus all villages are in a single database, which means that the
information is crossed.

Good research to all!

Could it still be possible that people who settled in that area near
Lisbon could have been from France? I know that Portugal was settlers
from all different countries when it became established.

Vila Franca is an old city near Lisbon. Vila Franca de Xira.
According to -Nossa Senhora da Vida- 3rd Visconde de Botelho, that Vila
Franca do Campo was named by Goncalo Vaz Botelho, one of the early
colonizers in Sao Miguel. It is thought that he was born in the region
of Vila Franca de Xira, close to Lisbon where his family had good
estates (seigniories). Many of us are descendants of Goncalo Vaz
Botelho.

2010-04-06 Thread Alvin Goularte
I apologize for my tardiness. Yesterday I was shopping and a friend came up to
me and since she was born in Terceira I asked her several questions about
names.  Especially the name Enos.  This name has bugged me for some time.  She
told me her maiden name was Enes and that it was pronounced Innis and
could possibly be what I'm looking for or maybe it could be Inacio which she
said was usually a first or middle name.    Anyway I thought this might shed
some light to you

Hi, I'm looking for information about John INNIS who was born in
Faial, 1830.
Parents; John INNIS and Louisa Constance.
John married in New Zealand in 1851 and died in Australia, 1914.
We believed he was of Scotish or British descent, but are now thinking
he may have been Portuguese.
We have been led to believe his name would have been Joao INACIO if he
was Portuguese.

Hi Eric,

Thank you for that information.

I wonder if the supposedly un-related MOURA families in the Oakland
area connected up with each other.

Re: [AZORES-Genealogy] Amelia Candida Enos

2010-01-16 Thread Alvin Goularte
Hi,  I have tried to research Enos in the Azores with no luck.  I was told that
Enos was not the correct spelling and that it could be spelled several
different ways - Inacio, Ignacio, Eanes, Eanas- I was given 8 or 9 variations
most of which I can't remember.  I had that information in my cmputer at one
time but lost it to a virus that hit my computer several years ago.  My Enos
was from Pico.

Does anyone have any info on Amelia Candida Enos??  She was born about 1844
most likely in Flores.  She married Joseph Francis Brio, where at unknown. They
ended-up in Yreka, Siskiyou county, Calif where Amelia died in 1915.  Any info
would be greatly appreciated.

Hi Alvin,

My aunt Mary (Machado) Bezera grew up in Laton and after they sold their Dairy
Farm they moved to Riverdale and she still lives there today.  I know most of
the relatives lived in Lajes on Pico.  Mary Machado's father was Francisco Jose
Machado.  Riverdale and Laton are not that far from each other.  I am sure if
we dig a little we probably have common relatives. I have my family history on
Ancestry.com if you would like to look at it. I can send you a invitation if
you give me your personal email address.  I do not have my grandmothers birth
record but am sure she was born in Lajes.  The other relatives could be from
other towns I have not pinned them all down yet.  We do have Goularts in our
line and many other names. So let me know if anything sounds familar.  Thank
you, Vivian

Gayle, I apologize for not chiming in sooner but it has been a great while that
I turned on my computer.  My maternal grandfather, Jose Garcia Jorge, was born
in Candelaria and there are several generations of Garcia Jorges that are from
there.  My maternal grandmother, Amelia da Gloria Matos, was born in Madalena.
Her father, Francisco Ferreira Matos, was born in Madalena and her mother,
Francisca do Epirito Santo,  was born in Lages.   I was born and grew up in
Fresno and Fresno County.  Lots of cousins still there.  Are you related to
Fred Machado?

Mary Ann,

Thanks for taking time to post a reply. I'm aware of the database for Pico.
Actually, I spent several years extracting the marriages and deaths for
Candelaria with the thought of possibly publishing the results. I was in the
middle of doing the baptisms when the database came online. Oh well. Its been a
wonderful tool for people !

I wrote the post because I find the migration patterns fascinating. I've found
cousins in nearby cities and as far away as Canada and Panama. My connections
through my grandmother extend from Candelaria to Sao Mateus, Sao Joao, and a
few in Madgalena and Lages. If you ever want to compare notes.

Thanks again,
Gayle

My Dad was from Pico.  University of Minho has all of the areas  online.
Take what they have as starting point.  The address is listed  below.  On the
first page, click on Ilha do Pico and on the next page,  click on the area
on the map that your relatives were from.  You may be  asked to do it again
and then you will reach a page that has an arrow in a box  near the bottom
and you will click on it.  When the next page loads, you  will see a bunch of
flags.  Click on the British flag and from then on  everything will be in
English.  There are mistakes in these files, but it  will give a place to
start.  By the way, I was just in Fresno this weekend,  I live near Sacramento.

Re: [AZORES-Genealogy] Mattos

2009-12-12 Thread Alvin Goularte
Mattos is a rather common Portuguese name and I have them on my dad's side as
well as my mom's side.  My mom's mother was a Mattos from Pico.  On my dad's
side he had his sister that married a Mattos.  This Mattos I referred to as
Jose (I'm not sure that is correct) had a brother I thought was Manuel and they
had their mother that all came from Sao Jorge.  They settled on a farm in Santa
Rosa area and my aunt could not do the farm work after his death so she sold
the farm and moved to a house near downtown Petaluma.  I am sure I have this
information in print.  I have a stack of papers about 15 to 20 inches high and
is an awesome job to go through to find anything.

Re: [AZORES-Genealogy] Matos Sao Jorge Cheese Factory, Santa Rosa

2009-11-17 Thread Alvin Goularte
Hi Loretta,

William Goulart could be related I am not sure.  Before my dad passed he told
me of an uncle who immigrated to the Hollister - Salinas area in the mid
1800's.  He was Manuel Goulart and had a large family and many of his
descendents  still live in that area, also Watsonville area, and Modesto area
and in the San Joaquin Valley.  I have not been able to find anything on this
uncle who was from Sao Jorge (Calheta or Topo)

Hi Al,

My Matto's (Matos) are from Sao Jorge.  Not sure of any in Pico (Yet!).
Interesting, I grew up in Turlock. :)  I believe there were eight
Mattos children most of whom settled in various place of California.  One I
know of stayed in Sao Jorge.  I'm still in the beginning process of research on
this particular line.

Two weeks ago I purchased Sao Jorge cheese (via phone) from the Matos family to
have for Thanksgiving.  When I mailed my check to them, I included a family
tree printout for their review.  Because of that, Mr. Matos phones me and we're
hoping to visit their family in the next couple months.

PS:  Note, I have two different spellings of Mattos.  Some use Matos and others
Mattos.  :)

I didn't see them. My cousin vistied Ponta Delgalda in the 1980's and had
access to the actual books for Baptismal and Marriage certificates for
freguesia Santa Barbara, Santa Maria. Her husband knew Latin well and said some
of the earliest records used many Latin words. I don't know if all of the
record was in Latin. I stand corrected if this isn't so. I personally can't
make heads or tails of the micro fiche, but she said she can't either. The
actual books were easier to read, easier being a relative term.

stock them for sale.  I grow some in my backyard.  They are not the type that

but they are more flavorfull.  I received the roots from a friend and set them
out in the Spring.  Incidently, I think they go great with linguica!!!

Steven,

This ancestor died in 1945 and his occupation was a mason?  Something like a
brick or stone mason?  If he was self-employed, then no, he would have no
Social Security number.  The U.S. government didn't give self-employed people
benefits until the mid-1950s.

You didn't have to be a citizen to get Social Security.

[AZORES-Genealogy] Re: Spouses dieing about the same time

2009-06-26 Thread Alvin Goularte
Recently there was an elderly couple here in Tulare County whe died two or
three hours apart; they had been married 72 years.  Years ago before I was born
an aunt, my father's sister, was committed to an asylum because she thought the
devil was taking over her body.  She was having strange sensations throughout
her body.  Several months later her  husband died due to loneliness , grief and
inablity to cope.  (There were two small children). One month later she died.
Grief due to the loss of her husband and her medical condition were factors.  I
concluded in recent years that she actually had Multiple Sclerosis which my
oldest son has.  Pre 1930 they had no idea what that was and thought she was
off her mind when she complained.

I agree that when a couple were close and had a loving relationship and one of
them dies the surviving spouse often looses the will to live and dies a short
time later.

My grandmother died very suddenly and my grandfather while not in good health
but could have lived much longer died three months later.

On my other side of the family my grandmother died about two years after having
a stroke. My grandfather reached the age of 102, 27 years later.

[AZORES-Genealogy] Re: Advice - Information on Immigration From Azores to US

2009-03-31 Thread Alvin Goularte
Dad and his friend also from Calheta, Sao Jorge, were on the road to California
by train as soon as possible.  His friend came as a passenger and did have the
resources to support himself.  My father earned a little bit of money on the
boat which paid for the train.  He never registered or was required to until
WWII,  He registered for the draft and was told that as a dairyman he would be
classified under Essential Occupation and most likely never be called.  Later
Aliens were required to register which he did.  The question of how he got here
never came up, but most of his life he had this fear that he may get caught and
get deported as  an illegal alien. Dad was 16 and he had a job just a few days
after arriving in California milking cows (by hand) for an immigrant family
from Denmark.

Hi All - My great grandfather, Antonio Nunes, immigrated from the island of
Pico in 1860.  He was born in Sao Matteus in 1840.  I am trying to find out his
date and port of entry.  He lived in San Benito County in CA after his death,
so I have no idea where he came into the UW in 1860.  Also, do you have any
idea on how long the trip took and average cost per person?  I am assuming many
immigrants were farmers or laborers without a lot of money, so do you think
most families saved up the cost of the passage in order to give their children
the chance to immigrate?

Thank you for any information or advice on how to research this.

Robin; If you ever find that your Soares Coelho line goes back to Santa
Maria, we would most likely be connected as my grandfather was Jose Soares
Coelho from Santa Maria. He immigrated first to the east coast and then
ended up in CA. In CA he first settled in the Los Osos area and later in
the Milpitas, San Jose area. Just a thought, Sam

Yes, I am researching the Mattos family form Sao Jorge.

My Great Grandmother was Mary Mattos (Borba) from Sao Jorge. He daughter,
Rose (Soares) Coehlo told me Mary had 7 brothers and 3 sisters. Four
brothers came to the USA and 3 stayed in Sao Jorge. The brothers who came
here were: Frank, Tony, John (who started the Festa in Gustine) and one
other who's name I don't have right now - possibly George.

In Sao Jorge, there were maybe two brother with the same first name of
Manual with two different initials she thought. The third brother was
Theodore Matos who was a Professor. I also have a note of Professor in
Calhetta?. Anyhow, one brother was disabled of sort with a huntched back -
they said from an accident playing a game like leap frog. He was the
Professor and when to Lisbon. He also married a Professor and I believe
they have a son who's a Professor or possible the brother who's the
professor is still alive. I received an email from a list person saying
that they knew this Professor, so maybe he's still alive.

Another brother was a police chief in Sao Jorge.

Back to the USA - My Great-Grandmother's brothers were also Tony and George
possibly of Gustine. Tony we believe had 6 boys and 1 girl. Then I have
notes of someone called "Peanuts" - meaning one of the brothers.

Other notes indicated: Three brothers married 3 sisters. Clarence, Jack
and Tony. Now these could be children of Mary's brothers I don't know. I
do know that Clarence lived in West Sacramento and was close to my
Grandfather Lawrence.

Hopefully some of this information may be of assistance. I have not had the

chance to research any of this information. Several weeks ago we went to
Newman and then stopped in Turlock and visited with Aunt Rose. This is
where I obtained all this information, but have yet to research any of it or

input it into Ancestry yet.

Let me know what you think.
Thank you,

.. Robin Borba Besotes .

I lost my dad two weeks ago and life is definitely a circle because my son and
daughter in law had their first son, my first grandson, Colby James on St.
Patrick’s Day, 9 lb. 4 oz. I guess the luck of the Irish. My dad knew that he
would have been a great grandfather, but he passed the day after her due date.
I would think it was him holding on, but I guess it wasn’t meant to be. My
parents will be his guardian angel. After two weeks of grieving, the memories
aren’t forgotten, my parents are in my heart and it’s now time to enjoy a new

Everyone has been great sending me their condolences on my dad. We are a family

Hi Everyone

I have a question for the group to see if a certain scenario is plausible...

A child is born around 1894 in Santa Ana, Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. He is not
baptized at that time, but only after the family returns to Terceira about 9
months after his birth. I always thought that baptisms were usually done fairly
soon after a child's birth. Do you think it s possible that a family, maybe
knowing they planned to return to their homeland of Terceira, would wait and
NOT baptize the child until they did return to Terceira?

This person is my husband's grandfather. He was born Joao Cardozo Esteves,
according to his Naturalization and Alien Registration papers. I have searched
for his baptism for years in the microfilmed records of Rio, but have not found
him. A baptism back in Terceira could explain not finding any records in Rio.
Of course, it could just mean I haven't found the right location yet.  :) He
left Angra, Terceira in 1914 and immigrated into Boston, settling in Alameda
County, CA under the name of John Cardoza.

So, anyone have any thoughts on this? I'd sure appreciate the feedback.

Thanks.
Kathy

[AZORES-Genealogy] Re: Barcellos Family

2008-09-16 Thread Alvin Goularte
"E" and Beth, My father-in-law had a sister who married a Barcellos.  They
lived in San Joaquin which is not very far from Dos Palos.  San Joaquin is a
small city on the Fresno Co. west side while Dos Palos is just across the
county line in Merced Co.  Barcellos had two sisters who lived there also.  I
believe they were from Terceira.
