[AZORES-Genealogy] DNA question

2014-12-30 Thread Bigal429 via Azores Genealogy
Hi Cheri
I have been in communication with Eric about my Family and he suggested a
family finder DNA but that I should notify you. He sent me a web cite which
I find confusing. So do you have an easy way to do this? Do agree that this
test will help me find info on my GGfather And my GGmother who have
father unknown on their birth records?

What you may want to do is create a directory (e.g., FTM_Backup) and use
the program backup to write to this directory. Then, when the backup is
done, go ahead and write to the CD/DVD. Oh, be sure to check the options for

Dear "E",

I know I've shared my back-up strategy before. I'm sure many will see
this as extreme, but I've worked with computers for over 20 years in records
management and I am very cautious.

First, even with diversified destinations (cloud, hard drive, USB, DVD,
etc.), you will want at least two different methods of backup. I have seen
many programs getting upgraded/patched and either not actually backing up
files or, believe it or not, scrambling the content (encryption gone very
bad!)

As for myself:

Mozy:
  cloud based backup

SyncBack Free to:
  32GB SDHC card
  32GB USB Flash drive (periodically)
500GB USB Fire/Waterproof hard drive (sentrysafe)
  8TB NAS Drive (RAID5)
  3TB USB Hard Drive

Program (application):
  FTM to NAS
  Quicken to NAS

Nero Burning ROM:
  Gold layer DVD

Now this is overkill for most people, but I have had problems before to
teach me to be very protective.

One last note, it is also easy to lose track of backups (especially with
the number I keep). Be sure to use encryption on your backups to keep them
private. Just don't lose the passwords!

Bill

casado

An explanation of his titles show he would be regarded as important as a
Cardinal to the island. He was the :

Ouvidor Eclesiastico- ecclesiastical judge of the Concelho de Santa Cruz.
Conego Honorario- Honorary Canon- The title of Canon is still given in
many dioceses to senior parish priests as a largely honorary title. It is
usually awarded in recognition of long and dedicated service to the diocese.
Honorary canons are members of the chapter in name but are non-residential
and receive no emoluments. They are entitled to call themselves canon and
have a role in the administration of the cathedral. His obituary shows he was
an honorary Canon of the See of Angra. This was the head of the church
for the western group of the Azores

Desembargador honorario da Curia Patriacal- Honorary Judge of the
Patriarchal Curia- Patriarchates have an assembly called the Patriarchal
Curia,
which assists the major archbishop in administering the sui juris church. The
patriarchal curia is distinct from the diocesan or eparchal curia of the
patriarch or major archbishop's diocese or eparchy.
The patriarchal curia consists of the permanent synod of the Church, the
chancellor, assistant chancellor, and notaries, the patriarchal finance
officer, the patriarchal liturgical commission and other patriarchal
commissions, and the patriarchal tribunal Up to three bishops may be elected
specifically to serve in the patriarchal curia.
The last part shows he left in his will, $50,000 to the church of Sao
Pedro at Ponta Delgada. For 1906 it shows a man of substantial means.

Hi Al,

Your grandmothers name as Anna Lourenco born in Santa Cruz doesn't match
but..I remember that you have a Pico connection and I seem to remember
that possibly it was to Candelaria and/or Sao Mateus. Cardinal Jose da Costa
da Nunes was born in Candelaria. His "mansion" there has a wall around it
that you have to go through to go up onto the veranda and the door. It's
very elegant. Is there a "mansion associated with a Cardinal similar to that
on Flores? I ask because your story is familiar to my grandmothers. She was
from Candelaria but they came to New Bedford in 1907. Her maternal
greatuncle was Cardinal da Nunes. They told a story of his helping with
education
for family members and the "mansion" that he lived in when he came back to
Pico where he is buried in the sarcophagus in the church in Candelaria.
Could there be a connection?

[AZORES-Genealogy] Cardinals living in Flores

2010-11-23 Thread Bigal429
I was recently told by a cousin that my father who was born in New Bedford,
was sent back to Flores for schooling. My cousin said that he lived with
my Grandmothers uncle a Cardinal. This would have been around 1902 to 1910.
Does it seem logical that a Cardinal would be living on Flores? Does anyone
know how I can find out the names of the Cardinals of the Azores.

[AZORES-Genealogy] Re: da Rosa in San Juan Bautista CA

2009-01-17 Thread Bigal429
Hi Maryanne
On this note you have written that I have a Joseph da Rosa born oct 23 1877.
I have over 6000 names on my data base with none born oct 23 1877. I have
used the data base from the Azores which you mentioned extensively. I also
belong to a online group which deals mainly with the Azores. The group address
is
 _azo...@googlegroups.com_ (mailto:Azores@googlegroups.com) . You can ask
them to be included and that's all it takes. Send me your phone number so I
can
talk to you

maryanne_r...@msn.com writes:

Hello,

Old immigrant communities. San Juan Bautista?

My name is Mary Anne Rose and I have been doing genealogical research on my
da Rosa family since perhaps 2003, my cousin David Wilson (b. 1940) got
involved when he was in sixth grade and interviewed my grandfather about his
family, cousins, etc which is hugely helpful. David's mother visited the
Azores
long before we did in 2005, finding our great grandparents marriage
certificate in the Archives in Horal, Faial.

But I am more creative at internet research than he. . . so I was able to
build upon their research in different ways. And thus I am contacting you. You
have a

Joseph da Roza born
23 Oct 1877
San Juan Bautista, San Benito, CA

Bottom line, our grandfather Anthony Lawrence Rose (christened Hollister CA
in April 15, 1883) was of Azorean descent. His godmother was Hyacintha Serpa,
according to the priest, which my research leads to connections to your
family. i.e. Jacinta "jessy" de Serpa.

My grandfather's sister Minnie married Joseph Elmer Serpa (November 1874 -
1938), they had a son Elmer - who was my dad's first cousin and I remember
visiting cousin Elmer and his sons in Willow Glen area of san jose, CA. Minnie
and Joe Serpa are buried in St. Mary's Cemetery in Gilroy. My great
grandmother Rosa Gomes da Conceicao born in Cedros, Faial, lived with them
after her
husband died in 1913 and she died about 1934. Her brother was Joseph Gomes who
married Rosa da Conceicao (Garcia da Rosa) and they lived with their large
family near Hollister. You have them listed in the tree notes somewhere as
well.

In any case, it was a very small Azorean community in San Juan bautista and
Hollister in San Juan Bautista. I have not been able to make a connection
with the other da Rosa family from the area, but if they came at the same time
as my great grandfather Manuel Francisco da Rosa, I am sure they must be
cousins, etc. My aunt told me he left Faial about 1864 on a whaling ship and
returned to Faial in 1975 to marry his sweetheart in the village. I believe
they
came from Cascalho, Cedros in Faial. My research at the Archives in Horta bore
out much of the family history.

On line there is much more available, though I believe there to be
transcription errors in this: If the link does not work you can connect to the
site
through azores genweb, which is where I found this. Took my family back 24
generations.

_http://sarmento.eng.uminho.pt/cgi-bin/geneweb?b=CEDROS;lang=en_
(http://sarmento.eng.uminho.pt/cgi-bin/geneweb?b=CEDROS;lang=en)

So I will not write more until I find that you are still interested in this
research, or that this email still is valid. I live in Manhattan in New
York, so I am on the East Coast. My California research has involved my visits
"home." And then to Faial.

Sincerely,

Mary Anne Rose
