[AZORES-Genealogy] More From Eastman's Newsletter Article

2009-07-08 Thread Family History

***My Comments- Please see the fourth paragraph and think long and
hard before you give any DNA samples to anyone. They can not prove
your ancestry. End of My Comments***

The folllowing is a Direct paste from Dick Eastman's Genealogy
Newsletter Article received yesterday-

According to news reports, a half million consumers have purchased
genetic ancestry tests, which are sold by more than two dozen personal
genomics companies with names such as "Roots for Real," "23andMe" and
"DNA Tribes." Typically, the test taker swipes the saliva inside his
or her cheek and sends the swab to the lab. The DNA is extracted and
compared to samples from a reference database of haplotypes (sets of
inherited, linked genetic markers) to see if there's a match.

Different tests use different methods. For example, mitochondrial DNA
tests trace the mother's lineage, while Y-chromosome tests track
paternal ancestry. But because these tests only trace one bloodline,
they exclude most ancestors. Moreover, they cannot pinpoint where
these ancestors lived.

Another option is AncestryByDNA, a genealogy test that relies on
markers that show genetic differences between what are assumed to be
four biologically distinct populations: Africans, Europeans, East
Asians and Native Americans. But some groups that don't fit neatly
into these categories, such as South Asians and Middle Easterners,
have received test results identifying them as Native Americans, for
example, according to researchers.

Also critical to resolve, according to the article, are the ethical
issues concerning the collection and use of DNA samples. For example,
members of the Havasupai Tribe in Arizona allege that researchers from
Arizona State University and the University of Arizona collected 400
blood samples from tribal members for diabetes research. But,
according to news reports, those same samples were also used for
unauthorized research on schizophrenia, inbreeding, and population
migration, which stigmatize tribe members. The Arizona Court of
Appeals ruled late last year that the Havasupai tribe can sue the
Arizona Board of Regents, which is seeking to settle the case.

"It is a scientific imperative that we enact enforceable policies that
determine what constitutes responsible and accountable collection and
secondary use of DNA samples," the article says.

In addition to Lee and TallBear, coauthors of the article are Troy
Duster, professor of sociology at UC Berkeley and New York University;
Deborah Bolnick, assistant professor of anthropology at the University
of Texas; and Pilar Ossorio, associate professor of law and bioethics
at the University of Wisconsin Law School.

[AZORES-Genealogy] BEWARE of DNA TESTING From Dick Eastman's Genealogy Newsletter

2009-07-08 Thread Family History

Tougher Controls Sought For DNA Ancestry Testing

As the popularity of take-home DNA kits to trace ancestry or calculate
the risk for serious medical conditions grows, there is an
increasingly critical need for federal oversight of "direct-to
consumer" genetic testing, as well as of the use of DNA samples for
research, according to researchers from the University of California,
Berkeley, and several other academic institutions.

In the past year, scientists, sociologists and bioethicists, among
others, have come to agree that the technology of these direct-to-
consumer tests, which run between $100 and $1,000 apiece, is
problematic and that the test results can be misleading and lead to
problems including skewed ethnic data and questionable membership
claims to Native American tribes.

But while organizations such as the American Society of Human Genetics
have issued guidelines to curb the unintended consequences and misuses
of DNA testing, federal agencies need to step in and help shape a
"gold standard" in genetic ancestry testing, according to a policy
paper published in the July 3 issue of the journal Science and
coauthored by researchers from UC Berkeley, Stanford University, the
University of Texas, University of Wisconsin and New York University.

[AZORES-Genealogy] Re: list of Azorean immigrants

2009-07-06 Thread Family History

We never heard from Joao on this, but I re-read the email to me that
reafirmed that immigrants going to and from Azores to Brazil were not
required to have a passport for a long period of time. I would have to
ask about the years that this was in effect if it is important to
someone. They were called clandestines. They were not tracked.

[AZORES-Genealogy] Re: list of Azorean immigrants

2009-07-03 Thread Family History

I understand from someone who lives in Brazil, that the Portuguese
government did not require a Passport for most of the people going
back and forth from the Azores to Brazil, as an incentive for them to
go down there to live and work. I too have seen the Passports online
but was told that this is a very small fraction of the comings and
goings from Azores to Brazil and back, and should not be used as a
definitive answer as to whether an ancestor made the journey.

John Correia John Correia was born on August 27, 1927, to Anton and
Frances Correia and passed away at the age of 81 on June 6, 2009. John
married the lovely Angelina Dolores Banevedes on June 11, 1949 and
would have celebrated 60 years of marriage this year.

Johnny, as he was known, was easygoing and always had a smile for
everyone. He and Dee (Dolores) lived and raised their family in the
Kings County area. Johnny worked in agriculture and liked being
outdoors. Games of cards with family and friends were one of his
favorite ways to visit with loved ones and relax. During his
retirement years, Johnny loved to travel to Oregon with Dee, where he
fished and enjoyed the scenery while visiting with family. He looked
forward to the holidays as he cherished the time spent with his
children, grandchildren and great grandchildren all gathered together
- not to mention that Dee would let him sneak in a few extra sweets!
One of his favorite treats in recent years was a Chalupa, and he would
often hit Dee up for one while they were on their outings. Those who
knew Johnny best will always remember the ever-present twinkle in his
eye, his low chuckles of amusement, and his cat-like grin - there even
in the face of adversity. He will be dearly missed.

In addition to his parents, John was preceded in death by one son
Arthur; four brothers, Tony, Joaquin, Arnold, and Frank Correia; and

[AZORES-Genealogy] Immigrant Ancestor Project

2009-05-11 Thread Family History

The LDS Church has the Immigrant Ancestor Project online, but work has
been stopped on the Portuguese part of it for a variety of reasons. I
just heard back that: There is new software to be installed hopefully
this summer that will allow a better search of the approx 27,000 to
28,000 Portuguese records the Church has already.

In the meantime, if you go to

immigrants.byu.edu

then click on Search-

that takes you to a search screen -then if you leave all spaces blank
except for Place and choose "Freguesia" in the drop down menu, click
the search button, it brings up about 7800 passports from Portugal to
other places. Lots are to Brasil. This may be a help to a few of you.
I have not worked with this search screen enough to have had success
with other parts of it.

If I hear anything more, I will let you know.

[AZORES-Genealogy] Cemeteries of Stanislaus County

2009-05-10 Thread Family History

On FamilySearch.org there is a 33,000 + stash of books, family
histories, etc. I am just starting to look at it but came across
Cemeteries of Stanislaus County. This is the Newman area of California
along the I-5 Highway corridor which includes Los Banos, Crows
Landing, some people who may have lived going toward Watsonville and
San Jose. Anyway there are over 200 pages listing the people buried in
the Hills Ferry Cemetery from 1871 to 2007. It sometimes lists the
Island in the Azores the deceased is from. It should be available for
complete download, but I have not figured that out yet. Again, this
has been digitized by the local genealogical society of Modesto, and
put on line by the LDS Church. It seems that many if not most of the
listings are Portuguese.

So go to www.familysearch.org

At the top of the page on the left is a drop down menu, with Search
Records at the top. When it drops down, select Historical Books. When
the search screen comes up, copy this: Cemeteries of Stanislaus
Countyand paste in the title section for the book, then click on
search.

The book comes up, allowing you to select a range of letters of the
alphabet, and is a ledger with name, some birth dates, death date,
location of grave and a comments section that sometimes mentions the
place of birth or a family member name. You can search within the book
with the menu at the top of the book page, but I have not done much of
that yet.

I have found a family member here and hope that you may, too. Did not
fully search the rest of the database, no time as yet.

In checking out my Azores ancestors, I came across instances of some
of them living in San Mateo County, after moving to California. I
found on the San Mateo County Genealogical Society Web Site, some
indexes of births, marriages, and deaths, as well as collections of
articles or some mention of Portuguese names and want to share. While
there are not as many Portuguese as I expected, there are some in the
databases and the search is easy to do, all in English. While the
checking is free, if you want a copy of an article there is a charge,
but is around five dollars. If you are fortunate enough to find
someone in the death index, it is online free, but there are few of
those. I have found a couple of things that I am going to order, so

[AZORES-Genealogy] Re: GeoCities web sites will be closing

2009-05-01 Thread Family History

That Yahoo is doing this is no surprise. When Google started out its
GMail and Groups, there was a long article in Time Magazine in which
they stated that they would not taint these relationships by addding
advertising. Now GMail has advertising all over, plus it is given over
to advertisers so we are targeted with the ads based on the content of
our email that we create and receive.

So I am interested to see what they do with Groups and Gmail. All
along it appears that the "free" service is meant to be revenue
producing. They denied, denied, that there would ever be a charge for
their email or hosting groups, but we shall see.

In the meantime, if there is anything in this group's archives that is
important for you to keep, keep a copy in a safe place so you will
always have it.

Ancestry.com is the major force behind Rootsweb at this time.
Ancestry.com also is connected with many other genealogy giants and
seems to be taking over.

[AZORES-Genealogy] Re: Immigrants Who Married, once Arriving in US

2009-04-28 Thread Family History

One of the sons of my relative was disabled. He got around with
crutches but was a hard worker. There is a photo of him sitting on the
ground shearing his sheep.

A couple of brothers came to this area to start farms. They brought
their parents over, but for some reason, their sister could not get
the necessary papers and permission to come to the United States. So
the brothers met this disabled man (the son of my ancestor), asked him
if he would go back to the Azores and marry this woman so that she
could come to California, too. He agreed, knowing it was to be an
arranged marriage, just to get her here to California. When the woman
and this disabled man met, they fell in love and did not want to have
just a civil wedding, they wanted to marry in the Church. Her parents
were very upset thinking that their daughter would have no future.
That he could not support her. They married anyway, and she followed
him not long after he came back to the United States. They had a happy
marriage for about five years, producing two children. Unnfortunately
he had a heart attack and died near the the fifth year of the
marriage. It all worked out, as she moved to the Southern California
area to be with her parents. Not long after that, her sister died
leaving her children with their father. The widow and the widower got
together two years later, married, and had a long marriage that all
said was very happy. They then had one child in common.

I think our ancestors made do with what was available and married
whoever asked for the most part.

[AZORES-Genealogy] Census Search

2009-04-24 Thread Family History

List Members,

I am looking at this as a possible help for a relative I have not
found and wanted to share the resource with the list.

Age Search Service The Census Bureau provides an "age search" service
to the public:
We will search the confidential records from the Federal population
censuses of 1910 to 2000 and issue an official transcript of the
results (for a congressionally mandated fee).
NOTE: Information can be released only to the named person, his/her
heirs, or legal representatives.
Individuals can use these transcripts, which may contain information
on a person’s age, sex, race, State or country of birth, and
relationship to the householder, as evidence to qualify for social
security and other retirement benefits, in making passport
applications, to prove relationship in settling estates, in genealogy
research, etc., or to satisfy other situations where a birth or other
certificate may be needed but is not available.
Age Search Fact SheetFEE REQUIRED: $65 for a search of one census for
one person only.
Personal checks and money orders accepted. No credit
cards.

YEARS SEARCHED: 1910 through 2000.

ACCESS:Census records with individual names are not on
computer. They are on microfilm,
arranged according to the address at the time of the
census. Most agencies require
the earliest census after the date of birth.

REQUIRED: A completed BC-600 Application [PDF 142k] (Solicitud
Para Busqueda De Registros Censales [PDF 156k])
for Search of Census Records, signed by the person for
whom the search is to be
conducted. This person may authorize the results to be
sent to another
person/agency by also completing item 3 of the
application.

Minor children - Information regarding a child who has
not yet reached the legal age
of 18 may be obtained by written request of
either parent or guardian. A guardian
must provide a copy of the court order naming
them as such.

Mentally incompetent persons - Information regarding
these persons may be obtained
upon the written request of the legal
representative, supported by a copy of the
court order naming such legal representation.

Deceased persons - the application must be signed by
(1) a blood relative in the
   immediate family (parent, child, brother,
sister, grandparent), (2) the surviving
wife or husband, (3) the administrator or
executor of the estate, or (4) a
   beneficiary by will or insurance.
IN ALL CASES INVOLVING DECEASED PERSONS, a copy of the death
certificate MUST be provided and the relationship to the deceased MUST
be stated on the application. Legal representatives MUST also furnish
a copy of the court order naming such legal representatives, and
beneficiaries MUST furnish legal evidence of such beneficiary
evidence.
RESULTS: An official census transcript will list the person’s
name, relationship to household
head, age at the time of the census, and state of
birth. Citizenship will be provided
if the person was foreign born. Single items of data
such as occupation for Black Lung
cases can be provided upon request. If a person is not
found, a form will be sent with
   that information.

Additional data on the same person (Full Schedule) -
The full schedule is the complete
one line entry of personal data recorded for that
individual ONLY. This will be furnished
in addition to the regular transcript. There is an
additional charge of $10.00 for each
full schedule. They are not available for 1970, 1980,
1990 and 2000.

TIME INVOLVED: The normal processing time is 3 to 4 weeks. Cases are
processed on a first in,
first out basis. Passport and other priority cases can
be processed in a week or less.
To expedite there is an additional $20.00 fee
required. To receive results within
three days, the application will need to be sent by
Next-Day Air via the Post Office,
Federal Express, or private carrier and enclose a pre-
paid express return envelope.
Applications can be faxed to you.

There is no tracking going on. The list keeps track of the posts and
displays it online. I stated the numbers that the list publishes. I
wish more people would post to the list as happened on the old Azores
list. That is all, no competition, criticism.

I would not know how to track.

[AZORES-Genealogy] Re: Follow up to: Children Who May have Been Indentured When Coming to the United States

2009-04-19 Thread Family History

>From the Book Azores: Nine Islands, One History; page 326, footnote #
18, says: Arquivo dos Acores, II: 170.

The above is the resource used to document the story about someone
from Ribeira Grande receiving 4,000 reis along with articles of
clothing from the Ribeira Grande Town Hall to take care of an
abandoned baby for one year. So if some one were to research this,
they would have to go back to this original source to read who the
child may have been and maybe get some insight as to how to get the
"Nannie Registry" There is no listing of this resource in the
bibliography of the book to indicate anything more about the sources.
I think you would have to contact the author to see where she got her
original documentation. Maybe the entry for this original source for
the Bibliography was left out?

In this same section of the book, it states that "During some years,
the number of abandoned children was extremely high, as happened in
1858, when the total surpassed 1,000 babies." Not sure about what is
meant here, is 1,000 for all the Islands combined? The translation may
have presented a difficulty to preserve the original information
intact .

The next page states that "more than 70% (of the babies) ended up
dying". Then it gives the reasons in addition to being abandoned.

So if ancestors were leaving the islands during this time period, one
can easily see what an enormous pressure people must have felt to go
elsewhere no matter the cost, to survive.

[AZORES-Genealogy] Re: "arrives in MA as a 12-yr-old to be an indentured-servant for a family in Boston"

2009-04-17 Thread Family History

Delores,
I sent some info to the list that I read in the book Azores: Nine
Islands. It stated that children (during certain years of the Azores
history) who could not be cared for by their mothers were given over
to nannies (paid by the government) who cared for them until age 7
years then they were sold to be indentured servants until age 18 or 21
years. It did not sound as though there were lots of children in this
circumstance as the book said a very high percentage of the children
died before age 7 years. The mothers must have been sick with grief to
have to give them up, then to have them die, because there was not
enough food on the islands.

I was told by a German researcher that there were periods of famine
where villages in Germany knew that they could only support so many
people with the food that they had. And there was no food to buy. So
the villages would gather what money they could and buy passage for as
many people as possible to send them elsewhere, often to the United
States, so that they would have a chance at living rather than so many
starving to death.

Also in the book is that most of the children died, did not reach 7
years of age. And that the ones that did live became indentured until
legal age, 18 or 21 years depending on the time frame.

If the children were given names, then it does not sound as though one
could not go back on a relative to find their ancestry, right?

[AZORES-Genealogy] Rodas

2009-04-02 Thread Family History

In the book, Azores, Nine Islands, it talks about Rodas or Casas da
Roda, where a baby could be left anonymously, much as we now have
"safe houses" in the United States, when someone gives up a baby. It
states that most municipalities in the second half of the 19th century
had these places. The baby was then raised by a nannie to age 7 years,
paid by the government. Having a registry of nannies was begun during
the 16th century.

Does anyone know of this custom? Did the registries record the babies
somehow, or were they just keeping track of the nannies? If the babies
were anonymous, that meant they weren't baptised or given names? The
book says that the total surpassed 1,000 babies (probably a total of
all the municipalities, though it does not say) that were cared for in
this way in 1858. In 1879 this strategy was abandoned and the mothers
were paid to keep and care for the children. After this, there were
many fewer babies abandoned. That must have been such a terrible
situation for families, no wonder they left the Islands.

That is a lot of children to not be accounted for, so I wonder if
there was some record or if anyone knows.

[AZORES-Genealogy] Azores Book

2009-03-31 Thread Family History

I have had some questions so want to direct this to the list for
anyone else having the same concerns.

I do not know if the book is in English only or Portuguese only.
Deolinda's email address was given in another post and she could
answer that.

I do not know how many copies they have on hand or how many have been
ordered already for the copies they have.

I have the impression that there should be enough copies already
printed for anyone who wants a copy. If for some reason they did sell
out, there should be more available as Dennis Borges wants to use it
as his text book in one of his classes. I would not worry about
getting a copy. U C Berkeley is the printer so it should not be a
problem. If you want several copies for some reason, you could call or
email Deolinda if you have questions about availability.

Hope that if you want one the process to order goes smoothly and all
is well!

[AZORES-Genealogy] Last Post Azores: Nine Islands...

2009-03-30 Thread Family History

List,

The order form is online and the books are available. Dennis Borges
did not have the six or so books after all. While I was with him, a
teacher who had gone on a tour of the Islands with him and some other
teachers, picked up two of the books, one for herself and one for a
sister. So the others became promised between the time I left home and
when I got there. That should not be a problem for anyone on the list,
as I talked with Deolinda at UC Berkeley and she is very happy to
provide books per the order from that she sent me.

I posted a small sample of pages and the Contents as it is difficult
to decide to buy without knowing what one is buying. If someone has
questions, please email me privately.

I hope my service to you has been helpful. I think of all the help
many of you have been to me so many times, and this is a small thing I
could do in return.

[AZORES-Genealogy] AZORES BOOK THROUGH DENNIS BORGES

2009-03-30 Thread Family History

I have talked with Dennis Borges. He has been out of town all weekend
and got in late last night. He has about six copies of the book. He
said that U C Berkeley should be making the book available and he can
talk with them about online ordering for those interested.

I will talk with him more about making the copies he has available
first come first served. NO PROMISE ON THESE AS YET. I am guessing
that it would be $20 plus shipping and insurance, maybe add another
five dollars to the $20. This is a GUESS as I have never done this
before but want to help. I will talk with Dennis more as we were both
in a hurry. I will try to get one copy and post online the table of
contents and the index if people say via the list they want to see
that.

I had asked people to respond to my private email and maybe there is
confusion about doing that, so Cheri I hope that it is okay about
peole just sending to the list if they are not sure how to email me
privately.

If you want one copy or more, let me know how many copies you want. Or
if you want to wait to see the info from the book, that is fine. If I
get the copies Dennis has, it will be first come, first served to who
has already emailed me, with one book only to the first responders I
have already received.

It does not seem to be a problem to get one, so do not be concerned it
you were not among the first five. I have no idea when UC Berkeley
will have copies as Dennis was not sure.

Again, I know nothing about this book and am doing this as a help to
the list. I do not live in Tulare and it is a hike from where I live.

I WILL BE GONE ALL DAY BUT WILL CHECK THE LIST LATER TODAY ABOUT 5 PM
PACIFIC TIME.

[AZORES-Genealogy] New Book--Azores: Nine Islands, One History

2009-03-29 Thread Family History

List,

I have not been able to reach Dennis Borges. I will try tomorrow at
his school to see if I can talk with him.

Whoever is interested in the book please email me Privately-Not On the
List. If I talk with Dennis, I can tell him how many books are wanted
and try to find how to obtain them.

I did a search on Amazon.com and came up with "not available". The
book is being sold in the Azores, I saw that online. I tried U. C.
Berkeley Bookstore as that is part of the hosting of this book
presentation, but it is not offered. The bookstore does have an Azores
Map and two travel books for the Azores. If interested,

http://www.bkstr.com/Home/10001-10433-1?demoKey=d

or if the link does not work, Google: U. C. Berkeley Bookstore.

I know nothing about the book, Azores: Nine Islands, One History. I
volunteered to get in touch with Dennis Borges, so that is what I will
do if I can.

[AZORES-Genealogy] Death Certificate

2008-10-22 Thread Family History
List members,

When my grandparents traveled to Terceira in 1919, my mother's 5 year old
brother was bit by a dog with rabies and died. She was 8 years old. She
remembered (she is deceased now) all the happenings around his death, but
did not know the disposition of his body.

Two or three months ago, I wrote to someone in the Azores (I think it was by
sending an email to an Azores Volunteer on a Web site somewhere), and
received an email from a government worker in Angra. She said that the
record is in the:

"registo civil de Angra do Heroismo. But may I can help you, we've here a
indicates of terms parochial after 1911, anda I found in august 20 of 1920,
in freguesia da Conceição, Angra do Heroísmo, obituary nº 503, of the book
1." And that I must contact the "conservatoria do registo civil de Angra do
Heroismo".

In this situation, this kind person wrote back that she had searched it for
me and found the record. Now, I would like a copy of the record, so how do I
accomplish that task?

Also, would there be any markings on a grave, or what would have been done
with the death of a child?

Additional question: Those of you who have visited Terceira- how are these
government offices set up? How does someone get a response? Once I emailed
Joao Ventura and he assisted me. I don't understand how the different
agencies there are organized and what the functions are. Maybe my method of
asking for assistance is not what they need to be able to provide the
service?

Thanks in advance for any thoughts on this.

Charlene
