Took flights from BWI to Terceira. Usually late in the day in Saturday. Need
a passport. The military side is now run by Portuguese Military. You cannot
leave the base till your passport is stamped!!! On Monday. There is lodging on
base. Place to eat as well and exchange money. Need a ride to the other side
tho my husband and I have walked there. - the civilian airport to catch flights
to other islands. People in lodging always helped us secure our plane tickets
since we do not speak Portuguese. I would go to Sao Miguel to Vila Franca where
grandmother was born. Once flew to Madeira via Terceira to Ponta Delgada Azores
to Faial Madeira to grandfathers birth place

2017-03-14 Thread Marie
Hi Sam:

Kathy Cardosa has a link on her website to an extensive family history of
the Flemish settlers of the Azores by Belgian-Dutch genealogist Andre
Claeys. You will find the descendants of Willem de Kersmacere AKA Willem
van der Hagen there. Also an explanation of his research to indicate that
Willem's name was in all probability de Kersemacere not vd Hagen.

2016-07-04 Thread Marie
My grandfather, John Antonio Borba at age 11, first settled in the San Luis
Obispo area of California in 1901; and lived there for about 10 years. He
then moved south to the desert of Brawley and El Centro, He and his
brothers finally settlied in the Chino/ Ontario, area of California in
about 1924 and remained there for the rest of their lives. We know of no
other close Borba family in California. I sure wish we did. I have
verified this with my last surviving aunt , age 92, who has a very good
memory of people and family history.

Thank you Eric and Joao for providing the translations for these records.

[AZORES-Genealogy] Re: Researching Antónia de São José, daughter of Manoel Jozé da Cunha and Maria de São José, Topo, São Jorge

2016-06-24 Thread Marie
Hi Eric:

Sorry for the blank responses--have had too much caffeine this morning.

Antonia was born 9 August 1812 before her parents were married. Her
baptism record confirms the names of her mother and maternal grandparents.
See top right
http://culturacores.azores.gov.pt/biblioteca_digital/SJR-CH-TOPO-B-1801-1815/SJR-CH-TOPO-B-1801-1815_item1/P197.html

Then in 1817 ( top left) her parents, who were married in 1814 brought
her to the church, for a ceremony to perhaps "legitimize" her?? The record
verifies her DOB, but I cannot read what follows.

We need a person more fluent to explain this record and notes in the
margins of both records.
http://culturacores.azores.gov.pt/biblioteca_digital/SJR-CH-TOPO-B-1815-1828/SJR-CH-TOPO-B-1815-1828_item1/P34.html

Thanks for your help.

[AZORES-Genealogy] Re: maria vitorina da conceicao in sao jorge

2015-09-19 Thread Marie
It will get better by practicing, do read the posting on Gen web. We all
started this way.
As far as a head start for you, Maria was baptized on 4 June 1893 in the
parish of Santo Antao, she was born on 31 May 1893.

Her father was Manoel A. d'Azevedo from the parish of Nossa Senhora do
Rosario in Topo, her mother was Maria da Conceicao from Horta, a single
woman.

Her paternal grandfather was unknown, her paternal grandmother was Anna
Victorina
Her maternal grandparents were Joao Antonio Victorina and Luisa da
Conceicao de Coracao de Jesus

The rest is church lingo

[AZORES-Genealogy] Need help with info on IES Hall, East San Jose

2013-11-15 Thread Marie Vierra
Hi,

The IES Hall in East San Jose will be celebrating it's 100th anniversary
next year, and there will be a book published on it's history as well.
Unfortunately, there was a fire in the 1990s which distroyed records from
the 1930s-1950s. The authors have compiled some info during this time
period, but would like to ask for help in acquiring as much info as
possible. Specfically:

- any queens (images and information)
- IES Presidents (images and information)
- images of the IES (interior and exterior) between 1945-1959

If you have any information between 1930s-1950s, it will be greatly
appreciated.

Please email me directly:

Many thanks.

There's 115 hits.  I'm in CA, so it's routing based on my location (USC,

[AZORES-Genealogy] Cotton Mill in Taunton, MA

2010-08-17 Thread Marie
My grandmother is long gone and I was too young to think about asking
the right questions when I could have. Among my many questions are
how could a very shy 16 year old young girl come to the US alone,
without knowing any one ( that we know of) not speak the language,
find a place to live and get a job in a cotton mill in Taunton??. She
lived in a boarding house, we assume . Does anyone know what cotton
mill she might have worked at in Taunton? She worked with thread, if
I recall correctly. What is the history of immigrants from the Azores
finding jobs in the mills. Too many questions, not enough answers
from the last survivng family that might know???

Thanks for your help

2008-09-19 Thread Marie

Hi Cheri:

The following is an e-mail I received from Joao Ventura regarding my
questioin:

Dear Mrs. Volbeda,

 Thank your for your email.

Were are working on the records every day. So I would advise you to
check the site regularly for update.

The records for Santo Antão will start to be online next Monday and
when those are complete, Topo will follow.

If you have more questions, please contact us.

 Regards,

 João Ventura

 Hi Marie,

I checked and see only Calheta, Norte Pequeno, and Ribeira Seca (all in the
council of Calheta) online.  None of the other freguesias are online yet.

Check with the person who told you that they were going live this morning.
I don't know of anyone on this list who knows of that information.

 Sorry,
 Cheri
