[AZORES-Genealogy] Jewish diaspora? That came out of nowhere!

2014-05-11 Thread Melinda Lopes

I am unaware of any personal Jewish ancestry but my results came back with
9% Jewish Diaspora. What is really notable is that neither one of my
parent's results show any Jewish Diaspora. I am trying to figure how that
happens. My results were:

47% North Mediterranean Basin
28% European Costal Islands
12% European Northlands
9% Jewish Diaspora

*My father's results (both parents from Azores):*

89% North Mediterranean Basin
5% European Northlands
5% Middle Eastern
1% East African Pastoralists

*My mother's results:*

55% European Coastal Islands
24% European Northlands
19% North Mediterranean Basin
2% Eurasian Heartland

Mostly I can understand the blending of my parents' result but I don't
really understand how I got the 9% Jewish Diaspora which was shown on the
map as centered over Poland.

RE: [AZORES-Genealogy] need help with obit for Maria da Trindade

2013-10-19 Thread Melinda Lopes

Edward et al,

I wrote to Manoel Cesar and he responded as follows:
"Maria Luiza who married to Luiz Pereira Lopes on 2 sep 1861, in Rosario -
Lagoa, is the same Maria Candido do Rego or Maria de Jesus, as stated on the
baptism records. It is common at this time, sometimes a Maria de Jesus goes by
Maria da Conceição in one record, or Maria dos Anjos in another one, etc. It is
complicated, but the first name Maria never changes. All we have to do is to
look for all the baptisms for the siblings and see if the names of the parents
and grandparents are the same.
In this case your Maria goes by the names: Maria Candida do Rego, Maria Luiza
and Maria de Jesus. So, there is just one Luiz Pereira Lopes." I would
appreciate any citations you have for Maria (all of her last names) and Luiz
Pereira Lopes or their descendants. Manoel has generously located the records
for Luiz' ancestors but I only have detailed information about the descendants
of my grandfather, Jose born on February 5, 1877. It sounds like I might be
related to Hermano C. Pires and others. Thank you in advance for any
information you can provide, Melinda Lopes

Edward et al,

I will be happy to hear the outcome of this thread as the Jose Pereira Lopes
born in February, 1877, son of Luiz Pereira Lopes and Maria Candida do Rego,
was my grandfather. Edward and I have conversed about this line and recently I
have received a massive amount of assistance from Manoel Ceasar in tracing this
line. Manoel's research showed that Maria Candida Do Rego was the daughter of
Candido Jacinto do Rego and Maria Botelho. aka Maria Candido Coracao de Jesus.
I will ask Manoel what he knows about the potential for two Luiz Pereira Lopes.

According to family history, my grandfather only spoke of siblings Luiz, Joao
and a sister that committed suicide when she couldn't marry the man she loved.
My grandfather was farmed out after his mother's death. Thus, Maria Candida Do
Rego died after 1877 and it is quite probable that she died after 1883.

I would love to hear from anyone who has a connection to this family so that I
can add to our family tree. For those of you who are family connections and
possible family finder matches, my father, John Lopes has a gedcom in his
family finder results. We also have a private tree on ancestry.com which I can

Cheri,
Is it possible for FTDNA to add an option that would let those of us who would
like to share the population information the ability to do so? I understand
that some people are uncomfortable but most of us probably are not. I really
liked that feature and thought that it helped narrow down how one might be
related to various matches.

RE: [AZORES-Genealogy] Family Finder "In Common With" function

2013-09-02 Thread Melinda Lopes
Marilyn,

To use the function, you go to the family finder page and about a quarter of
the way down you see a section entitled "Filter Matches By." In that section,
you can see a Relations section. In that section is a drop down menu that that
you get to by clicking on the down arrow. In that drop down menu, you can
select "In Common With" Anyone whom you have designated (or has designated you)
as a "Known Relationship," will appear in the drop down menu under "Member."
You select the member you are interested in and you will see all of the other
members who are "In Common With" that member. If you are interested in doing
more advanced matching, e.g. seeing who you match both in Mtdna and Family
Finder, go to the Family Finder tab and choose advanced matching. That will
allow you to choose which tests you wish to compare.

Good luck,

OK I guess I am just very dense. I do not know where to find the "In Common
With" section on FTDNA. I have confirmed several on the known relationship page
as Distant Cousins, but do not know where to go from there. I did ask that 2 of
them add a GEDCOM. One person, John E Machado, I can see where the connection
is in our families. The other 3 with GEDCOMs do not extend far enough to make a
connection. I will request that they add to their pedigree.
Please help me understand the "In Common With" function. I have had a cousin
[not Azores side] test YDNA and I have done the FF. Would it be any help if I
have my mom's first cousin also test? They shared grandparents on both sides of
the paternal line. {1st cousins married]

Hi Susan,

It may have been Doug da Rocha Holmes who started a thread about "In Common
With." But with the latest round of results, it doesn't hurt to mention it
again.

If I don't know the relationship, I assign "Distant Cousin" and then I can run
the filter for "In Common With." They don't have to accept the relationship in
order for me to run the filter. FTDNA is supposed to change this where we
won't have to assign a relationship in order to run the filter. We will just
be able to to it. Don't know when this is coming though. They told us last
November at the conference and it hasn't happened yet (they keep IT pretty
busy).

For people who tested themselves and one parent (because the other is deceased)
can run the filter for "Not In Common With" to get the other side of their tree.

Once you get 3 people confirmed from the same ancestor, you have done a
triangulation and you will start to see other matches hitting on the same
people. The puzzle pieces start to fit together and things start to make
sense. But it takes time. This is what will need to happen with you and Joao
C. Ventura.

Because there's more of us Azoreans than either Madeirans or Continentals doing
our genealogy and DNA testing, we are going to have more matches than either
the Madeirans or mainland Portugal. You've got the DNA Admins on this list
with megaphones shouting every time there's a match or sale! It's not
happening as much on the Madeira or Portugal lists. They need some big mouths
over there!

Re: [AZORES-Genealogy] FTDNA 'known relationship'

2013-08-13 Thread Melinda Lopes
Paul,

When I get a FF match for one of the kits I manage, I will often mark those
matches with GEDCOMs as distant cousins so that I can use the "in common with"
search function to try to figure out the relationship. After I have the "in
common with" list, I use the chromosome browser to see if the matches are on
the same chromosome. I always hope that matches will contact/respond to my
messages but they often do not. People generally do not confirm the pending
match until we know exactly where it is. It is so frustrating to look at all of
the matches and get nowhere with determining the relationship! My mother, who
is not Portuguese, has 35 pages of FF matches and I have only been able to
figure out one relationship.
