The proper spelling of the council is Ponta Delgada. The proper spelling of the
island is Sao Miguel. The sources I'm going to direct you to use Portuguese
spellings. We should all use them to simplify our searching.

You can find the records you mention on the CCA site. That's the Azorean
government website. They have digitized the records. Because it's from the
Azorean government where Portuguese is the national language, everything will
be in Portuguese. So you must use Portuguese spellings.

You can use tombo.pt/en as a portal or table of contents to the CCA. The
navigation is in English. Once you click on the link to the CCA though, you
will be seeing things in Portuguese again. Once you land on the Tombo.pt/en
page, look at the left column and type in Faja de Baixo and it will list all
the records for that freguesia.

As for a Joao born somewhere on Sao Miguel island on what you believe is 7 Oct
1898...you'll need a freguesia. You could search all 70 churches on Sao Miguel
looking for him. Here's a list of things to try to narrow down the freguesia:

Good luck!

Jerry,
These relatives are also related to my cousin, Nancy Pemantel Pinksaw, who
married Michael D. Pinksaw.
His mother was Mary Frances Dutra and her father was Manuel Pereira Dutra, Sr.
(3/7/1899) son of Joao Pereira Dutra (6/27/1847).

I still have a lot to enter on my ancestry files so we may be directly related
as well as I have both Dutra and Pereira relatives from Faial. My
grandfather, Manuel Furtado Dutra, Sr. (12/25/1903) was the son of Francisco
"Frank" Furtado Dutra (4/21/1870) and grandson of Antonio Furtado Dutra Valim
(11/12/1836) and great grandson of Joao Furtado Dutra (02/16/1796) and great
great grandson of Antonio Furtado Dutra (1/03/1756) and going back further the
great, great, great and so on grandson of the following Joao Furtado Dutra
(around 1725), Joao Furtado Dutra (Feb. 1685), Simao Pereira (about 1626), Joao
Pereira (deceased 12/15/1645) and Manuel Fialho (my 9th great grandfather) all
of Cedros, Faial Azores.
Hope this helps. The Azores google group has been a great help to me and I've
love to connect further.

[AZORES-Genealogy] Help locating Augusto Furtado/Angelina das Merces family from Ponta Delgada

2012-12-03 Thread dwoodtax

Looking to find any further info on my great grandparents Augusto Furtado (who
took the surname Pimentel later on) and Angelina das Merces who went to Bermuda
and then settled in Jamestown, Rhode Island.
Angelina is from the parish of Nossa Sehnora dos Anjos in Faja de Baizo, Ponta
Delgada - where they lived, and were married there. She was born on 1/21/1879.
I am showing her parents as Francisco Franco and Emila Augusta.
Augusto is from the parish of Sao Pedro Vila da Rebiera Gardna, Ribeira Grande.
He was born on 9/7/1863. I am showing his parents as Bartolomeu de Camara and
Carlota de Jesus.
Angelina left St. Michael's on 10/14/1905 aboard the SS Peninsular, going thru
NY on 10/29/1905, with final destination being Port Royal, Bermuda to see her
husband.
They had 4 children born in Portugal who accompanied Angelina on the trip from
St. Michaels to Bermuda - they were John (2/9/1897), Maria (Mary Grace
9/18/1899), Reuben (6/2/1900) and Manuel (born about 1905).
Thanks to Roselyn for translating Angelina's baptism record for me and to Joe
for sending the link to the actual church record to help me get this far.

Thanks,
Donna Dutra Wood

OK, one last correction (I hope).

The only people who received the Family Finder discount coupon from Family Tree
DNA (FTDNA) are people who have already had the Family Finder test run. Which
is 90-something people. So if you checked your spam folder and you don't have
a coupon, you probably didn't test Family Finder.

I believe I've given a coupon out to everyone who has asked for it. If I
didn't, please drop me a line at gfscherim at gmail.com and I'll get a coupon
to you.

Hi E

I would try looking in the city directory’s for that time period. When I was
trying to find when my great grandfather died I found the answer in the city
directory he was listed in the city directory as having died the previous year
giving the day month and year. Also his wife was listed as widow.

Any ideas of how to find a death in MA, probably in Bristol County, New Bedford
or Fall River, between 1917 and 1920 and probably a suicide. And in this
instance, I believe he would not have been allowed to be buried in a Catholic
cemeteryat least that is what we were told when we were younger - don't
know if that practice is still the same today. Maybe I should try non-catholic
cemeteries and see if he is buried there? Or is there a MA death index
somewhere which encompasses the 1920's?

2011-07-18 Thread dwoodtax

Pat,
Good to hear from you again, cousin. Yes, I sent Emil the updated info I had
on my Furtado/Dutra family awhile ago. He is so great to help everyone with
looking up their lost connections. I am so grateful to you and Emil for all
the help you have given me in connecting the missing links. He has so much
info.
I had responsed to this thread earlier, thinking it was Jacki G. who sent the
post out, but never heard back from Jacki. MaryAnn feel free to contact me
directly also, as I have ongoing info on Rose Woodson and her family, she is my
3rd cousin, twice removed. I actually work for her granddaughter here in
Jamestown, Rhode Island. The Jose Furtado Dutra 4-25-1899 is my third cousin,
twice removed, so it appears we are related also. I'd love to share info with
you.

In case you don't have it - I posted the following on 7/16:
Upon searching your list I find that the Manuel Furtado born 11/5/1697, married
on 02/25/1715 and died on 10/29/1730 is my 7th great grandfather.
I have many of the other names on my tree but don't have dates associated with
them. Maybe we (and others who are related) could connect directly to share
info and update the group. My email is dwood...@aol.com. I have been
searching for my California relatives for awhile but can't seem to locate them
as I'm not sure what town they settled in. They are Frank Furtado born about
1897, Manuel Furtado born about 1926 and Joseph Furtado born about 1897 in
Cedros. They are the children of Francisco Furtado (1870) and Maria da
Conceicao Rosario (1878).

I posted the following as a response on 7/16
Yes, my grandfather was Manuel Furtado Dutra 12/25/1903, his father Francisco
Furtado Dutra 4/21/1870, his father Antonio Furtado Dutra Valim 11/12/1836, his
father

Joao Furtado Dutra 02/16/1796, his father Antonio Furtado Dutra 1/3/1756, his
father Joao Furtado Dutra (who married Catarina Maria Furtado born 2/4/1725)
and his father was Joao Furtado also. I actually have Furtado relatives on
both sides of my grandparents tree. There are also Rose and Garcia's in my
tree.

 Emil Donna,

Wow, more cousins more missing links to our Furtado Dutra line from Faial.
Donna I grew up with these families in Jamestown, RI. I was aware that some
had gone on to California. Emil, you have everything current in your files. I
am still plugging along slowly entering Donna's information to my PAF. Thanks
for your continued research additions to our numerous cousin lines. And
Donna, thank you for pursuing the Jamestown family lines that connect us. So

raise some other children as well.

His sister Rose also came to the US, not sure when. She lived near New Port,
RI and in her later years wintered in Florida where here daughters and son
live. Rose married a man named Woodson.

My uncle's other brother Antonio came to the US in the 60's as an older man to
be with his daughters. His daughter Rose had come to the US in the 50's with
her husband, Antonio Souza and two sons and they lived in California near us.
His daughter Maria came when he did and she never married. Antonio came first

Another brother, Joao was a half brother. My Uncle Joe sent for Joao's two

eventually Joao and his wife Maria also came to the US and lived here in Ca

I am very close to this family and am in contact with them regularly. We
consider ourselves related even though we are not blood related. My Uncle Jose
Furtado Dutra had two cousins, Jose Garcia and Joao Da Rosa (later americanized
to Rose). I have early pictures of them together, but I am not sure if the
pictures where taken here or in the Azores. They may have even come to the US
together. There was also a Moitoso family that would visit us the were related
to my Uncle Joe. I don't remember the husband's name, but the wife was Maria,
of course and sons were Frank and Manuel. The whole family came from the Faial

Oh and by the way, I also have Vargas relatives from Almoxarife.

Looking for my grandfather's family from Faial. His name was Manuel
Furtado Dutra born in Medeos, Faial on December 23, 1904 as our records have
it.
His father was Frank or Francisco Furtado Dutra born in Faial or
possibly St. Georges approx. 1870's and passed away approx. 1926 in Faial.
His
mother was Maria Rosade or Maria Dorocario born approx. 1875 and passed away
approx. 1977 in Faial. They had children named Manuel Furtado Dutra,
Joseph, Tony, Frank, Henry, another named Manuel, and 2 sisters whose names
are unknown who died very young. Manuel Furtado Dutra (the first born, my
grandfather) came to Providence, Rhode Island aboard the ROMA arriving in
April or May 1917 when he was 13 years old. The ROMA departed from Horta.
He settled in Jamestown, RI. His brothers Joe and Frank settled in

Hi Again Donna,
So glad you are looking for your ancestors. All of these names you
mentioned are people I knew on the island. (Jamestown, RI) I am excited that
you
are doing the research. I told Jim Pemantell (this is how Jim spells his
name) that this list would be so helpful to him if he ever wanted to research
his Sao Miguel ancestors as there seems to be more info here on Sao Miguel
than any other island. How wonderful that you have taken on the task! As far
as I know I have no connections to Sao Miguel but this list will certainly
be able to help you. They are a wonderful group of people and so willing
to share records and information.

[AZORES-Genealogy] translation - trabalhador/lavrador

2010-06-10 Thread DWOODTAX
I find my great grandfather and other relatives were trabalhador/lavrador.
Could someone translate for me, I do not read or speak Portuguese. Thanks
so much.

Just want to let you know what a great group this is. Within 24 hours of
posting my searches I've already had 3-4 replies with so much information.
I am so overwhelmed right now. This is good!!! I would never in a
hundred years been able to pull this much information together.
Thanks so much for all your help!!!
