[AZORES-Genealogy] Re: 2017 Azores Genealogy Conference
Thank you, Cheri and Rosemarie, for the wonderful conference experience you provided in SLC. I thoroughly enjoyed meeting folks with a shared research focus. Cheri, I can't thank you enough for the lectures on DNA that provided a clear and concise understanding of a very complicated subject matter. And Rosemarie, your presentation of the Portuguese-American Digital Newspaper Collection has already led me to find my 2x great grandfather mentioned in a Bay Area newspaper, yippee! My old beagle wasn't doing too well when I returned home. On Saturday, I found myself sharing tears with vets, techs, and other hospital staff believing Labor Day Weekend would be Snoopy's last. A week later he is doing much better and he has surprised everyone with his turn around. Instead of a 12-1/2-year-old beagle, I must have a "cat" with 9 lives! [AZORES-Genealogy] Re: Family Tree programs
Hi Maggie, I had a similar problem when I did not upgrade my old FTM and the new version was recently introduced a few months back. I chose to purchase the "upgrade" to FTM 2017. I then downloaded my tree(s) as a Gedcom file to my desktop. You can then upload the Gedcom file into the new FTM program. I would imagine the same process would work with other software programs, as well. Re: [AZORES-Genealogy] Portuguese Nomenclature
Thank you all for this thread on Paleography. Rick, do you happen to have an Ed. Pimentell in your tree? This person would have been living in the Hayward, California area in 1897. I have an old newspaper clipping with a picture of the "Forester's Band," "Haywards," taken in 1897. Along with a few of my ancestors, an "Ed. Pimentell" is named in the picture, too. [AZORES-Genealogy] 1920 U.S. Federal Census, San Leandro, District 0156, enumeration
Hi folks, I am looking at the enumeration for my great grandparents and am wondering what a particular notation signifies on the enumeration form. I have noted that persons who gave Azores as their country of nativity have an "OC" handwritten over "Azores" and "OL" handwritten over "Portuguese." I am wondering if any of you have determined if this notation was made at the time of indexing, or transcription, and what it represents? I have noted "Hamburg" was overwritten with "Ger," "Ost Freisland" was overwritten with "Holland," and "Fyal" was overwritten with "Ptg" and a number of other notations, as well. It is reasonable to suggest that "Ptg" overwritten on "Fyal" indicates Portugal, but "OC" comes across to me as either "Old Country" or "Other Country." Hi Margaret, I think Manuel Jr age is 11 months not 11 years. It would match his DOB of Manuel Jr - May 25, 1903, if he left in May of 1904. Re: [AZORES-Genealogy] Re: Trying to trace the last name Secia in the Azores
Hi Cheri, I know Manuel and Maria had the follow children, Mary J, Maria, Manuel Jr,. and Antone. I wasn't 100% when they actually immigrated because the date kept changing on the census information so depending on when they came is the only way to know which children were born in the US. Since E found the actual ships that show Manuel coming over in May of 1903 and then Maria coming over in May of 1904, that would put the first 3 children born in Portugal below are there DOBs. Mary J - March 13,1901 Maria Rose - April 5, 1902 Manuel Jr - May 25, 1903 Anthony (Antone) - April 20, 1905 I am now assuming since Maria was pregnant in May of 1903, she waited until after she had the baby and everyone was healthy to travel before coming to the US. Then got to US and a year later Antone was born. This is why I think E's information is correct, the children line up. Also on one of the census document Maria was listed as Mary Bento. Thank you for the follow up. Kim . Hi Cheri, E (not sure his real name) found the ships the came over on. He sent me the information in a private email. I'm not sure how he found it on Ancestry. Here is the information which lead me to the Passportes List. - Maria Bento M. Fonseca came to the U. S. on the ship "S.S. Canopic sailing from St. Michael's May 17, 1904. She is with children Maria 3, Maria 2 and Manuel 11 months going to her husband Manuel C. Fonseca, Mattapoisett MA. When Manuel Jr. applied for citizenship, he said his name was Manuel Secia but he came to the U. S. under the name Manuel Fonseca. - The father Manuel Cecis (Ancestry has Celio) Fonseca game to the U. S. on the ship Vancouver arriving in Boston May 23, 1903. He is going to his cousin Manuel Mauricio Mello living in New Bedford. He was born ca 1878 I believe in Sao Miguel. Are you saying these are not matches? Re: [AZORES-Genealogy] Re: Trying to trace the last name Secia in the Azores
Hi Mara, I found one Secia in Portugal born in 1890 and died in 1979 in Lisbon. He is also Manuel Secia and came to the US for a brief period but lived most of his life on the mainland of Portugal. He has one reminding grandson Joao and a great grandson Pedro. I am in contact with Pedro. He reach out to me years ago to see if we are related. This is why I didn't think Secia was shortened because there is one more Secia out there. Any Secia you find on FB from the US is directly related to Manuel Secia born 1878. He had two sons, Anthony and Manuel Jr that carried on the name. On Wednesday, January 4, 2017 at 5:47:58 PM UTC-7, Mara wrote: > > Hi, > > Yes, Sécia is used as a last name. [AZORES-Genealogy] Trying to trace the last name Secia in the Azores
Hello - I am hoping someone can help me or point me in the right direction. My great-grand parents immigrated to the US in 1902 from the Azores (I believe Sao Miguel). My great-grandfather has a very uncommon name, Manuel Secia born est 1877 and my great-grand mother has an extremely common name, Maria de Mello born est 1868-1874, so both are hard to trace. I have looked for both and can not find the last name Secia in Portugal and I can not find a Maria de Mello around 1868-1874 that got married immigrated to the US. They did have one child in the Azores Mary J Secia 1901 before they immigrated but I can not find anything on the birth. I did take a DNA test and it has linked me to a couple distance cousins in the Azores with the last name of Goulart but we can not figure out how we are linked. Since our Azorean ancestors often followed different naming practices, I thought it prudent to add the "aliases" that my 2x g.g-father used, as documented in his will and probate papers. I am providing these as there were spelled on the document. [AZORES-Genealogy] Bravo da Rosa
Hi everyone, I'm brand new to the group and I'm hoping that someone can help me track down information about some ancestors. My great-great grandfather, Frank Rose Bravo, was born in the Azores Islands in about 1858 or 1859. He came to the US in (I think) about 1878, moved to California, and worked as a barber. He married Isabel while in California. She was born in the US, but I think her parents (possibly Joseph and Constance Sousa) were born in Portugal or the Azores. The family story goes that Frank's surname was actually Bravo de la Rosa while in the Azores. Since then, however, I have been informed that his name was probably actually Francisco Bravo da Rosa and I believe he was from the island of Faial (or perhaps Sao Miguel). I do not know anything about his parents or lineage beyond what I have written here except that he had a brother named (Americanized version) John Rose Bravo who was in California also by about Spring of 1896. Does anyone know anything about these brothers or the Bravo da Rosa family? RE: [AZORES-Genealogy] MtDNA haplogroup
Evening, The last I can find by baptismal records is Guilhermina, Birth 27 August 1878 in Santa Cruz, Madeira / Death 12 August 1948 in Alameda, Ca. Her mother is listed as Augusta do Rosário {married to Monteiro} I have conflicting hints as to whether she is from or was born in the Azores / Maderia. The issue with the conflicting info might be a result of my own ignorance regarding paternal / maternal last name combinations, or lack thereof. I've also tried to obtain some records from Hawaii, but it appears that may take a good long while and that is assuming there are records to locate. There is of course the classic bit of family mystery behind this, and while I have thick skin, above all I wish to be considerate toward possible family connections. If your or someone are interested in some of the other other last names I am seeing in DNA matchups Ancestry but have yet to figure out, just shoot me an email at kimberlylhard...@gmail.com Cheers, K -- To unsubscribe from this group, send email to azores+unsubscr...@googlegroups.com. Hi Elaine, Yes that is them. I already have that information. I really appreciate you offering to send it to me. I just didn't know how to go about finding the freqesia and village for them. Rose (it could also be Rosa, RosIE or Rosalind) Frank Smiths wife had there 1st child Mary was born in June 1878 (according to the 1900 census under Manuel Mary Freitas) in Sao Jorge I found out from her death certificate I think it was. My great grandmothers sister Rose Smith (who is married to Frank Smith) is using the last names of Bettencourt, Silviera Silvester. And the name of Sodre is popping up I find. She was born in December 1855. Is there something I can do to help look for the information. I have ancestry also. But not the world edition. I have just the U.S. edition. My Great Grandmothers name was Mary Henriques. Henriques is her maiden name according to my grandmothers social security application. She was born in approx. 1840 according to her death certificate. Re: [AZORES-Genealogy] SSDI Records
Hi Elaine, When my stepmother died in October 2007 my stepsister was taking care of all of her financial affairs. I looked my stepmother up on the social security death index and she didn't pop up because my step sister didn't apply for the one time death benefit of I think $255.00 because she didn't know about it. I told my stepsister about the one time death benefit that she was entitled to it because she took care of the arrangements. When my stepsister applied for my stepmothers one time death benefit I ran my stepmothers name then she popped up under the deaths. So if you don't apply for the death benefit then you won't come up on the social security death records on ancestry as I experienced. [AZORES-Genealogy] Davina/Reis - Bandeiras, Pico
I am looking for DAVINA and REIS families in Bandeiras, Pico. Immanuel Gracier Serpa Davina, born 23 Dec 1823 in Bandeiras, Pico. Left the Azores in abt. 1835 as a stowaway. The captain of the ship was named John ENOS, and Immanuel used the name John ENOS throughout much of his life. Returned home in 1853 and married Anna Isabelle REIS (born 18 Aug 1828), also from Bandeiras, Pico. They returned together to the US (Boston) about 1858, and eventually settled in Hamburg, IA where Immaneul died. Anna left Iowa with son, George Nathan Gracier Serpa Davina and moved to Oklahoma. All of the DAVINA children had Gracier Serpa as their middle names. Could that be a family name? Two REIS cousins came to America with Anna to care for the children, but I don't know their names. [AZORES-Genealogy] Re: Communicating with family for information
I would give just a little family information going back 2 or 3 generations only. If you think that this family is worried that you are after financial gain from the estate tell them that you will type up a paper saying that you are not interested in any financial gain from the estate. That you are only looking for genealogy information and sign and date it and email it or mail it to them. Don't give all of your information to this person. Igave a great deal of genealogy information toa person on 2 of my family lines, and when this person thought that they had all of the information from me they stopped helping me with the family line we were working on together. I held back information that I knew they were looking for becacue I found out this person held back information on the family line I was looking for. This person to this day tries to go thru other people and when the 2 family names are mentioned I know it is the person I was working with trying to go thru the back door so to speak to get information. One gentlemen that emailed me to ask about the 2 same family lines as this previous person kept on asking me questions about. When I asked what information he had I could tell that he just got it off of familysearch.com real fast. Some of the information was incorrect. I asked the gentlemen if he knew this person and he said no. I already had done research on the internet and found this person that was helping me was on the board of directors for the genealogy society in his county at the same time as the man asking for information on the 2 family line names this person was looking for. When I asked this man if he knew this person he said "NO" and stopped emailing me. So be very careful what information you give somebody. Not everybody is as helpful as other people. [AZORES-Genealogy] Re: Questions (Names in Azores?)
Hi Vivian, Did the probate of Isabel Sousa list the names of any other relatives? Look on familysearch for the microfilm for the state and county for the time period that you need to see if they have the microfilm for the probate. Or you could try the superior court for the state and county that you need the probate for. Kim -- Original message from Vivian Christy [EMAIL PROTECTED]: -- I did have the probate now that I remember for Isabel but it only gave her name as Isabel Sousa. It listed her children that were still living all with the name of Holmes but nothing else. A cousin I had at the time in Modesto went to Hanford and got copies of the papers from there. They sold her home for 450.00 dollars back in 1936 and she owed back taxes and other items which took up all the money. Her son Frank Holmes nor the rest of the family had the money to pay to keep the property. It was a large corner lot with a two story house and basement. I don't have the probate for Primo Sousa. I will have to find out how to get that with out having to go there. I don't get out much because I take care of my Mom with Alzheimers full time. So I only have the internet. I will research the how to on the web site for genealogy like Cheri Mello suggested. Maybe there birth names will be in the probates. The probate might be a bigwealth of information. I found in my Portuguese Great Grandmothers probate one of the last names that they went by FRANCISCO that I didn't know about until I ordered a copy of her probate. It also listed her children and there relation to there brothers and sisters as 1/2 brothers and 1/2 sisters which verified what I thought in the 1st placethat my Great Grandmother was married 1 time before she married my Great Grandfather. Kim -- Original message from Vivian Christy [EMAIL PROTECTED]: -- Hi E, I know that is because my grand mother wrote a small bio and in that she said what happened when they first arrived in Boston, Mass when she was about 7 yrs old. She said her father came here a year before they did and had rented a farm in Oso Flaco, San Luis Obispo County. They stayed in Boston at a Hotel until they recieved money to take the train from Boston to Guadalupe, Calif. She did not say the year. I have searched for them in the census but was not able to find them until 1930 but only found the parents not the children. Could not find them all together as a family in the 1900's. I know they moved around from her bio. They had a prominent relative Isable Lewis a cousin that lived in San Jose and they stayed there awhile. Thank you for your help and the census and WWI records. May be we can figure out why they say the father is Frank Holmes and that they were all born in the U.S. My grandmother lied about her age. She also lied on her S.S. record and said she was born in 1900 which is wrong. She put her mothers name on that record as Elizbeth King. That is also not true. I did find the Obits for Primo Souza in 1930 he died and also Isabel Sousa in 1936. That did not help as far as whythe children list the father as Frank Holmes? Thanks for your help and for everyones help.
