Re: [AZORES-Genealogy] Help with name of girl being baptized

2019-08-13 Thread 'Gayle Machado' via Azores Genealogy
And, according to my History of Math professor, she was the first female
mathematician. She was murdered by some jealous male mathematicians because she
was so outstanding. One final note of trivia, her father was also a famous
mathematician.

Just thought I’d add a note of trivia albeit off the original topic.

2019-08-13 Thread JesseAndDeborah Mendonca
My brother in law and his family were so glad to know when I found out that
because he was born on St Hilary’s Day he got named Hilary. I know Hilary
Jr. and Hilary Mendonca III will be so glad to know it was a common name in
the Azores, lol. They skipped passing the name to the great grandson. 😊
thanks Margaret!

names from their daughter's marriage record. (Otherwise, I would not have
recognized the priests abbreviations of RIBEIRA. )

I just noticed that same little abbreviation on the very last line - the first
word- its the same abbreviation! Maybe it is Viera (?)

Re: [AZORES-Genealogy] Help with name and location

2018-02-26 Thread Margaret Vicente
Richard,

Cisaltina is the current spelling. The letter "C" is soft sounded and the
letter "S" is sounded off as in the letter "Z", (Seezaltina), and yes it is
a common name.

Ramalho is in the parish of Sao Jose, Ponta Delgada. However, there is no
one by this name born there in 1891, 1892 and 1893.

Your message is unclear to me, you mentioned her real name was Cisaltina de
Almeida. What other name did she use? Where exactly was the newspaper
clipping from?

The mother's name would be "Josefina"
Midle name de Nostremente, probably a "Christian" invocation name
misapplied. If I were to guess, probably Josefina do Nascimento do Couto.

What was her father's name?

Re: [AZORES-Genealogy] Help with name--Marriage, Relva, 1774

2016-06-23 Thread Nancy Couto
Yes, I can see it now. The marriage record also shows an exaggerated "R" in
the word "Relva" four lines up from the bottom. Obviously this part of my
family tree is still a work in progress, but now I have something to look
for.

Thanks.

RE: [AZORES-Genealogy] Help with name--Marriage, Relva, 1774

2016-06-23 Thread Richard Francis Pimentel
Looking at the names on the baptism of Anna the writer in transitioning from
the capitol “A” to the small “r” made the “r” more elaborate than normal. In
both cases the name on this record is “Aruda” in todays spelling Arruda. Going
back to the marriage record it now looks that the writer wrote in the same way
Aru – da. The Aru is squeezed together making it hard to read.

Thanks, Rosemarie, Rick, and Manoel. I have the baptisms of four of their
children, and Antonia's surname is given as "dos Santos" on all but one of
them. I was thinking of it as her religious name, but it could be a surname.

I like the suggestion of "de Ruda" however, because two of the children had, as
godparents, children of Joana Tavares, widow of Joam de Arruda. (Actually, it
looks more like "Aluda," and I was wondering whether Joana's late husband might
have been a relative and whether Antonia's surname could have been either
Arruda or Almeida.

I don’t think it is Machada. The first letter is definitely not an “M” and the
writer spelled all the other names out fully so an abbreviation there makes no

[AZORES-Genealogy] Help with name--Marriage, Relva, 1774

2016-06-22 Thread NancyC
Can anyone help me decipher the second name (surname or religious name) of
the groom's mother? (Right page, lines 19-20.) I've been staring at it for
two days and am totally baffled. Here's what I have:

Francisco de Couto, filho de Antonio do Couto, e de Antonia de __?
What looks like a three-letter word or abbreviation ends the line, and the
next line starts with "da." In context the word "da" does not make sense,
so I believe it is a continuation of the three-letters on the previous
line. I've checked the Family Search guides to Portuguese paleography and
can't find anything that matches.

http://culturacores.azores.gov.pt/biblioteca_digital/SMG-PD-RELVA-C-1762-1780/SMG-PD-RELVA-C-1762-1780_item1/P94.html

I will appreciate any insights or advice you can offer.

Many thanks,
Nancy

Yes, this Jeronimo is the brother of your direct ancestor Inacio Pacheco de
Mello (son of Adjutant Inacio Pacheno de Mellow and Francisca Maria da
Conceicao).

Thanks to you, Cheri and Pam for the helpthought that might be the
answer but the fancy H confused me.

Hi Lee,

Is this from the Pacheco de Mello line of your cousin (and therefore, my
ancestor also)?

Pam and Cheri are correct that this is an older version of Jeronimo. I
found several instances on a google search using this priest's exact
spelling (as Cheri noted: "Hyeronimo"), to include a Bishop on Madeira
Island.

older time periods used an "H" instead of a "J" on some records.

This the baptism of Jeronimo? (left page, bottom record) son of Ignacio
Pacheco and Francisca Maria born the 5th of November 1745.

http://culturacores.azores.gov.pt/biblioteca_digital/SMG-RG-CONCEICAO-B-1738-1749/SMG-RG-CONCEICAO-B-1738-1749_item1/P171.html

I'm a bit confused with the child's name. There are several Jeronimo's in
this family line and that may be what this is; but I'm not too sure of that.

It kinds of looks like H?alyeromino? I can't tell if the first letter is
a J, S or a fancy M??

Any suggestions/help greatly appreciated.

[AZORES-Genealogy] help with name of child of Salvador Vieira and Margarida Lopes

2014-10-13 Thread Erica Botelho
I cannot tell what the name of the child in this record is. It is for a
sibling of my husband's 6th G. grandmother. I thought it was Jose, but
Joseph on the left side is different. I think it starts with "S"

Record is right side, top entry

Lee,

Yes, looks like they forgot to record Maria's 2nd name.

That "ja defuncta" (or ja defuncto if a male) is something like a helping
verb. I think the literal translation is close to "has already died." A
native speaker can say for sure.

Look for the birth of Maria do Sacramento, daughter of Joao de Conde and
Maria . And while you are at it, collect all the kids for Joao de
Conde and Maria . You'll be able to figure out her name.

Good luck,
Cheri

[AZORES-Genealogy] Help with name of brides mother - NS da Luz, Graciosa

2014-05-16 Thread Lee
I need just a small amount of help the marriage record listed below:

Bottom record, right page

Antonio Lobam Botelho
married
Maria do Sacramento

I know he is the son of Antonio Lobam/Lobao Botelho (defunto died 1750 age
age 49) and Felipa Espinola

Maria do Sacramento's father is clearly Joao de Conde. As for her mother I
see Maria Ta/Ja defunta (does the Ta/Ja have to do with word defunto?)
Which I'm afraid it does.

Is her (the mother) name just plain Maria, no second name? I'm afraid this
one is going to be "fun" to solve.

Thank you in advance for any help/suggestions on this one!

I am back to work on my Azorean lines filling in some gaps.  I found this record--a new child for my ancestors, but I can't read the child's name.  I believe it starts with a P and the fourth letter is a q, so maybe it's Pulqueria or something similar?  Some thought the third letter looks more like an t than an l (like Patroncinia).  Here's the link to the record:http://culturacores.azores.gov.pt/biblioteca_digital/SMG-PV-MAEDEDEUS-B-1770-1790/SMG-PV-MAEDEDEUS-B-1770-1790_item1/P40.html(In case the link doesn't work, it is Maes de Deus, 1770-1790 image 0040Thanks for any help on this!
