[AZORES-Genealogy] Re: New in Reserching the Azores

2009-10-12 Thread Kathy Cardoza

Hi Leslie

Welcome to the wonderful world of Azorean genealogy! It sounds as if
you have some good info on this family. But, it might be helpful to
you to start from the beginning . your late husband. Write down
everything you know, his parent's names, dates and places. Then, you
gradually work your way back in time. It is always easier and
generally gets better results if you do it this way instead of jumping
right in to the great grandparents.

Also, I would like to direct you to my web site, the Azores GenWeb.
The link is below. It was designed primarily to help folks such as
yourself that are new to Azorean genealogy. You will find lots of info
and advice on how to get started there. There is a Paleography to help
you decipher the written language, lists of important words you will
find in records, maps of each island with links to the available
online records, How-to documents, Tips on getting started, and much
more. Don't worry about not being good with the language. With a
little practice, and knowing what to look for, you will be able to
read the records as you find them in no time!

Good luck and happy hunting!

[AZORES-Genealogy] Re: New in Reserching the Azores

2009-10-12 Thread Maggie

Leslie,
Do not be discouraged. Many of us that had grandparents born in the Azores, but
parents born here in the USA, did not have Portuguese spoken in the home, so
unfortunately, did not learn the language. How wonderful that you are wanting
to learn more. So many here will be able to help you, but do be sure to tell
us the full name of any persons and some approximate year of birth, or actual
birth date if you have it. That helps a great deal. For instance, my
grandmother's grandfather was a Carvalho for the last name - but they lived on
the island of Sao Jorge.
It won't be long and you will be amazed at how much information you will have!
Good luck, and God bless your efforts.

[AZORES-Genealogy] Re: New in Reserching the Azores

2009-10-12 Thread bellemarco
Leslie,

In order to help you more can you please tell us, if you know, when and
where they settled in the US. I did find a Virginio Augusto Carvalho in
Hawaii. Also, please give us his wife's name and their names of their
children and ages of each or as close as possible.

Please, don't get frustrated. You have to take this one step at a time.
Many of us did/still do not know the language but it did not stop us as
there are many helpful listers willing to guide others in their
research...many of us were in the same place as you a few years ago.
