Re: [AZORES-Genealogy] Ships sailing between islands and mainland

2019-06-17 Thread Cheri Mello
Hi Leonor,

The ship manifests that exist are the Passaportes that are housed on the
CCA. Use Tombo.pt to access them: https://tombo.pt/d/acores

I'm not sure people had to register if they were sailing from a Portuguese
area to another though.

I am aware of the 1883-1894 gap, which of course includes the year I am
most interested in (1889). Which is why I was surprised to see one of
Eric's attachments labeled "PD passports 1888x.jpg". 1888 is also in that
gap.

Sao Miguel has a lot of gaps. What's interesting though are the years you
mention contain part of the mass migration to Hawaii. In the 1980s, when
Bob De Mello had that Hawaii book made (extraction of HI bound passengers),
someone had access to those passaportes. I wonder if they were ever

Doug Holmes has the great Portuguese Passenger Ship Master List

There re some links to transcribed lists.

The CCA passports pages have the shiplist names at the right side of the
second page. This is a great resource for checking against a shiplist

http://www.culturacores.azores.gov.pt/ig/passaportes/Default.aspx

It is not searchable, but like a calander, each page in order, sections
broken down by years.

  Barbara,

In America, the Customs Passenger Lists cover the period from about
1820-1890 (Immigration Passenger Lists cover the period from about 1890-1954).

In Michael Tepper's "American Passenger Arrival Records," at the end of
the chapter titled "Customs Passenger Lists" (it's Chapter 3 in my book,
published 1993), it lists the ports and years covered, as well was what exists
and what's missing. For example, it says that Boston has copies or abstracts
covering 22 Sep 1820- 31 Mar 1874 (gaps) M277. M277 is the National Archive
roll number. That film is indexed in M334. It also mentions that 1848-1891
(State Lists) are indexed in M265. Other east coast ports (up in New England)
are Baltimore, MD; Bristol & Warren, RI; Edgartown, MA; Fall River, MA;
Nantucket, MA; New Bedford, MA; New Haven, CT; Newport, RI; New York, NY (this
is Castle Garden; Ellis Island was NOT in existence); and Providence, RI.
You'll have to go to your public library to check for the details on these
ports.

You can search Castle Garden: http://www.castlegarden.org/
I also googled: ships 1859 and came up with this. Don't know how good it

Other east coast ports (up in New England)
are Baltimore, MD; Bristol & Warren, RI; Edgartown, MA; Fall River, MA;

Don't know how good
it is though.

CT; Newport, RI; New York, NY (this is Castle Garden; Ellis Island was NOT
in existence); and Providence, RI. You'll have to go to your public
library to check for the details on these ports.

You can search Castle Garden: http://www.castlegarden.org/
I also googled: ships 1859 and came up with this. Don't know how good it
is though.
http://www.olivetreegenealogy.com/ships/tousa1854-1860.shtml

You can search Ancestry too. I don't believe they have every port though.
If you don't have a subscription, your local public library or FHC has a
subscription.

Re: [AZORES-Genealogy] Ships

2015-02-10 Thread Barbara Mecklenburg
Cheri,

I have looked at the passports and found my gr gr gr grandfather, Antonio
Victorino in Horta in March 7, 1859. I am now trying to find his arrival in
America. It looks like the ship is Asor and he arrived in (I think) Boston from
family records. But supposedly his brother Joseph (VItorino Jose) arrived with
him and I can't find him. So do you know if there is a passenger list for the
ship Asor landing in America in 1859? This is the url for the passport I found:
http://culturacores.azores.gov.pt/biblioteca_digital/PASSAPORTES-FAL-1856-1859/PASSAPORTES-FAL-1856-1859_item1/P60.html
Antonio Victorino is the last entry on the page.

Thanks for any help!

  Al,

  Outbound or inbound?

Outbound: I believe Horta is the nearest port to Flores. Your ancestor
probably registered in Horta (although, if he wanted to get to America on the
next boat, he could have made his way over to Angra on Terceira or Ponta
Delgada on Sao Miguel). Horta is not online at the CCA. You'd have to hire
Joao Ventura, the archivist to get it for you (heroi99 at yahoo.com).

Inbound: You'll have to check the port of New Bedford as well as the port of
New York (the ship may have sailed to New York first and your ancestor may be
counted there. Then the boat when on to New Bedford where he got off. Or the
captain may have had the New York people counted in New York and the New
Bedford people counted in New Bedford). I'm not sure what lists exist for 1884
in America. The port in New York was called Castle Garden in 1884:
http://www.castlegarden.org/ As for New Bedford, Michael Tepper's American
Passegner Arrival Records, list this in Table 1 (at the back of Chapter 3):
New Bedford, Ma:  Originals 1823-1899; Copies or Abstracts: 1826-1852 (gaps);
State Dept. Transcripts: 1822, 1825-1827, 1830-1831. There's a footnote: The
Archives has an unmicrofilmed card index for New Bedford, 1875-1899. Tepper's
book was written in 1993, so something may have been done with that index by
now. By Archives, Tepper means the National Archive and Record Administration
(NARA).

Carolyn M,

Only a few people on this list research the mainland. Most people here
research the Azores. So if no one answers, it's because no one knows.

I'd check the Tombo.pt site. Joao C. Ventura crawls various Portuguese
genealogy sites that have databases. Here is what he has for Porto:

You are a Gmail user. You never see your own posts, so it's hard to tell.

I would like to know if anyone knows of any online records of ships
manifests leaving Porto, Portugal to Brazil?

My great-uncle left Porto bound for Brazil on or around October 1911, but I
don't know the name of the ship.

I also posted this to the Portuguese Genealogy Board, but I'm not sure it
ever got through. This is my first post, and I want to thank you all for
being here!

Any information regarding the manifest would be greatly appreciated.

  Jacki,

The date on the file card of June 8 1882, is incorrect. The ship SS Monarch

Does anyone know where or if I can find passenger lists for ships sailing
from Hawaii to San Francsico in 1892?

I've looked on Ancestry and the only ones I could find start in 1893. I
couldn't find anything for ships leaving Hawaii on the Hawaiian Archives
site.

In particular, I am looking for my 2nd great grandparents, Manuel and
Joaquina Rosa Pereira (sometimes went by Perry) who arrived in Hawaii on the
Hansa in 1882 and suposedly left there on Aug 17, 1892 on the SS Australia
bound for San Francisco. I am trying to verify this as correct information.
They had one child (Maria 2) with them when they arrived in Hawaii from Sao
Miguel. They had six children with them when they left Hawaii. They settled
in Oakland and stayed there until they both died a few months apart in 1933.
The information that I have which was passed down by a cousin are just a
hand written collection of names and dates. There are no copies of any
documents or source information. There was a total of 11 children listed for
them. Although there were only birthdates and places for 7.

I have not been able to find them on any of the census' either. Which is
strange because they should be in Oakland for the 1900, 1910, 1920 and 1930
census.

Thanks in advance

Jacki,

Go poke around on Mel's Portuguese Hawaiian Web site:
www.yourislandroutes.com

I think in 1892, you are dealing with the Kingdom of Hawaii. There was a
short period of time where Hawaii was an independent nation, and then became
a U.S. territory before becoming a state around 1959. I'd have to look up
my HI history. But being part of the Kingdom may limit your sources.

Mel has some stuff for the Kingdom of Hawaii. If she doesn't see this

Sometimes she gets a little busy, so give her a couple of days to answer

Aloha again Jacki G.

I don't know which island the ships landed. My guess would be Oahu
first then some were taken to other islands. Two sets of my great-grandparents
eventually landed on Maui. But my Oliveira great grandparents went to Kauai
before Maui. Have you tried contacting The Portuguese Genealogical &
Historical Society of Hawaii?

It's only $10 a year dues to be a member.

Here is what it says about the Steamship Monarch in "The Portuguese in
Hawaii" by John Henry Felix, Ph.D. (out of print)
#7. Steamship Monarch (British) arrived Sept 15, 1882, 57 days out
from St. Michael (Sao Miguel), Azores, with 202 men, 197 women, 458 children.

  Mahalo Iris

That does help. It gives me an approximate year of birth for Luiz and
Jose. I haven't been able yet to find Luiz on any census and I didn't know that
Jose existed before two days ago.

Do you know if that would that be the island of Ohau where they
arrived?

  Thank you

  Iris,

If you have time, I would greatly appreciate you looking up
Luiz and Roza Fernandes and their son Manuel and possibly another son Jose. I
found an index card for them in June of 1882 on the SS Monarch but have been
unable to find the actual manifest. I am pretty sure that this is my g great
grandfather Manuel Fernandes and his parents and brother. If I could find more
info about them, I could be more sure. According to Roza's death cert and the
info from one of the census' she immigrated somewhere between 1880 and 1885
with her husband and at least one son. She was born Jan 1859 and her son was
born Aug 1878. I don't know any dates for Luiz.

I have been trying to find Luiz on a census but no luck so far. I don't know
how long they stayed there before moving onto California. He could have
only been on either 1890 or 1900 because he and his son Manuel (my g
grandfather) were dead by the time the 1910 census happened. I found Roza
and Manuels wife and daughters in 1910 in Oakland, CA. I know that Manuel
was killed 8/16/09 in a quarry explosion but I have no idea so far what
happened to Luiz and when.

Jacki,

We don't translate the word fregueisa because it comes out weird. So we just
say village. Someone has probably abbreviated Faja de Cima as FC.

The date on the file card of June 8 1882, is incorrect. The ship SS Monarch
arrived in Hawaii 2 Jul 1882, 57 days out of Sao Miguel . It would have left
port the first week of May, and been

rounding South America at that time. The manifest might not be available,
but the Oakland FHC has the films of the Portuguese Consulate registering

some were taken to other islands.  Two sets of my great-grandparents eventually

Have you tried contacting The Portuguese Genealogical & Historical Society of

Here is what it says about the Steamship Monarch in "The Portuguese in Hawaii"
by John Henry Felix, Ph.D.  (out of print)
#7.  Steamship Monarch (British) arrived Sept 15, 1882, 57 days out from St.

2009-12-10 Thread Jacki G.
Cheri,

He actually immigrated in 1906. He arrived in Boston on 8/6/1906 headed for
Martinez, CA. So, yes, he was here for the 1910 census. He would have been
in the Martinez area for both 1910 and 1920. Which is about 15 miles west of
where he was in the 1930 census. In 1920 he would have still been living
with his parents. He didn't marry until 1925. His parents names were Manuel
and Mary/Maria Medeiros and he had a brother named Manuel and two sisters,
Mary/Maria and Lizzy (Alice). Lizzy was born in Martinez. The others were
all born in the Azores.

Thank you for clarifying his citizenship status

Iris,

If you have time, I would greatly appreciate you looking up Luiz and Roza
Fernandes and their son Manuel and possibly another son Jose. I found an index
card for them in June of 1882 on the SS Monarch but have been unable to find
the actual manifest. I am pretty sure that this is my g great grandfather
Manuel Fernandes and his parents and brother. If I could find more info about
them, I could be more sure. According to Roza's death cert and the info from
one of the census' she immigrated somewhere between 1880 and 1885 with her
husband and at least one son. She was born Jan 1859 and her son was born Aug
1878. I don't know any dates for Luiz.

RE: [AZORES-Genealogy] Ships Records

2009-12-09 Thread Jacki G.
The 1930 census says what looks like Pd. I am assuming that that may mean
"pending". I was able to find the manifest of the ship that he arrived on
last night and there is a notation on it with a date of April 1938. Another
researcher told me that was made by the immigration dept. My mother keeps
saying that she thought is was in the late twenties but I called my aunt
last night and she said she thought she was around 12 when he became a
citizen and she was born in 1927. That would be right in line with the 1938
notation. She also said they had to go to San Francisco for it. There is a
regional center in San Bruno which is about 15 miles south so I guess I will
start there. The strange thing though, is, I have a copy of his application
for a Soc Sec. number. He did that in Dec 1936. How would he have gotten a
number if he wasn't a citizen yet? Maybe they didn't actually issue it until
1938?

Thanks for the help
Jacki

Hi Jacki,

First check the 1930 US Census to see if he was a Citizen. If he was then
depending on where he lived the court that had jurisdiction at the time
would have the records. Many immigrants did not apply for citizenship until
the late 1930's when social security was started. At that time you had to be
a US citizen to get social security.

Citizen ship records could be in a state district court such as records for
Attleboro, MA up till the 1940's were kept at the Taunton district Court and
then transferred to the State Archives in Boston. Later records in the
1950's were done in Federal courts and are now in the Federal Archives in
Waltham MA.

Hi Jacki

If your grandfather was Naturalized then his Petition for Naturalization
would provide a wealth of information as to his arrival in the US.

Jacki,

You will need to check the Boston arrivals as well as the Ellis Island
arrivals. More info on how to do that can be found here:
http://homepage.mac.com/kmacardoza/Genealogy/HowTo.html
(Scroll down to "Passenger Arrival Lists.")

Records from the Azores are starting to come online, but nothing from
Faial yet. Once you exhaust your U.S. sources, you might consider
hiring a researcher to look at the port of Horta, Faial, in their ships
lists leaving the Azores. A list of researchers for hire can be found
here:

Hi Jacki,
You might want to look at arrivals from Providence, R.I. My family,
paternal and maternal, arrived from Terceira in Providence, also took
the train to Gustine, CA.

[AZORES-Genealogy] Ships Records

2009-12-07 Thread Jacki
Hi, I am new to the group. I am hoping that someone can point me in
the right direction. My grandfather, Jose A. Medeiros (1898-1979) came
to the US from Faial when he was about 7. I only know that they came
into the Boston area and then traveled by train to the west coast. How
do I, or where can I, find the ship that they came on?

Ultimately, I am trying to find out what village they were from on
Faial.
