Carol, You have perplexed me without intending to do so. Your William Wood is not listed in the two volume book on the Portuguese of Martha's Vineyard. Yet, you said the family lived for a time in Edgartown. I did find a Wiki article on his son William Madison Wood which seems to give an alternate name for his father. If interested just google the son's name then read the paragraph on his early life. Good luck with your search. Re: [AZORES-Genealogy] help offer
Hi Gayle, According to his naturalization documents, William Jason Wood arrived in New on or about the 10th day of January 1844, became a citizen under the same name on the first of March, 1853 in the Justice of the Police Court for who he worked. His marriage certificate reads (on Nov 11, 1855) that his fathers name was Janets (think is probably Jacento and his mothers name was Gacia (could be Garcia). his Wife Christiana Omelin (could be Amelia) father was John P. Ignacio. William was from Faial and Christiana was from Pico. In the book by Roddy titled Mills, Mansions, And Mergers, they speculate that his name could be Jacinto, Madeira or Silva - they also state that Christiana's father was Charles Madison and her mother was Christiana Amelia Dutra. So you see where the name Guilherme(William) Medeiros Silva came from. The book has several inconsistencies He had various jobs and died on August 21, 1870, his occupation was laborer Hope this helps Sincerely, Carol - Original Message - From: Gayle Machado To: azores@googlegroups.com Sent: Friday, August 31, 2012 17:42 Subject: Re: [AZORES-Genealogy] help offer Carol, You have perplexed me without intending to do so. Re: [AZORES-Genealogy] help offer
Carol, Have you contacted the Portuguese Project on Martha's Vineyard to see what, if any, info they have ? The 2 volume book I have does show some Wood/ Woods families, but their names don't appear on the website. Another reason I felt somewhat perplexed earlier. The society has been very helpful in the past. The last time I was in contact with the island's historical society, the contact person was Chris Baer (I think that's how he spelled his name. ) Also, the book Ships of our Ancestors shows a SS Northern Star. Could this be the one he came over on ? Finally, have you looked at the NEPs website for Faial ? It has some, not all, records listed. Happy hunting.
