[AZORES-Genealogy] Surnames

2015-04-04 Thread George Medeiros
Does anyone know when surnames became standardized in Portuguese- Azorean
Public Records ? The recent posts about surnames is a big help because I had
assumed children had the Father's surname and sometimes the middle name was the
Mother's Father's name. This research is all new to me and I had no idea a
child when an adult could choose a surname other than the Father's.George
Michael Medeiros Jr.

Yes there are a few that cluster more than others. Bettencourt is found
more often in the central island group, for example. As for Silva, it's all
over the place.

[AZORES-Genealogy] Surnames, middles names

2013-06-09 Thread Gerri Martin
How does one decide what to use as a preferred or primary name for a
person? Baptism, marriage, death etc all list the same person with
different (sometimes very different) surnames, middle names etc. Then if
they come to this country, it starts all over again with different
spellings etc. I was just wondering how experienced genealogists do. Is
there a general consensus or rule they follow?

Thanks

[AZORES-Genealogy] Surnames: Linhares,Amaral,Melo, Furtado,Caetano

2014-10-14 Thread Erin Smith
I was wondering if anyone had any info on where I could trace back my ancestors
records in Sao Miguel. I don't speak Portuguese. I have some info on them. My
maternal grandfather was born in 1919 in Rhode Island. His father was Manuel
(possible first name) Amaral and his mother was Maria Gloria Linhares both were
from Sao Miguel. My maternal grandmother was born in Rhode Island in 1920's.
Her mother was Maria Melo born 1902 in Vila Franca in Sao Miguel. My grandmom's
father was Manuel Furtado Caetano born 1900 in Riberia Quente, Sao Miguel.

RE: [AZORES-Genealogy] Surnames: Linhares,Amaral,Melo, Furtado,Caetano

2014-10-14 Thread pico
Hi Erin,Many years ago, I remember a researcher with lots of Sao Miguel ancestry who has Linhares ancestors. His came from Terceira somewhere that I don't recall, but he traced a lot of them and I can't be certain but it might include your family. It could be possible that anyone named Linhares in Sao Miguel comes from this same Terceira ancestor. It's fairly common on Terceira, though I don't personally have ancestors by that surname. The closest I come is ancestors living in a neighborhood called "Vale de Linhares" in the parish of Sao Bento, Terceira. The researcher I am thinking of was one one of these genealogy lists and might be on this one. If so, you might be in luck.Doug da Rocha HolmesSacramento, CaliforniaPico & Terceira Genealogist916-550-1618www.dholmes.com

2014-10-14 Thread Cheri Mello
Erin S,

I would guess 90% of this list does not speak Portuguese. But I would
guess that over half can "read" a document and extract the necessary
information out of it.

You're going to need to census work, obituary work, naturalization work,
etc to find the freguesia (village) of your ancestors on Sao Miguel. You
can get ideas from this "how to" here: http://goo.gl/M1bZKo

As for the 2 that you have, you'll have to narrow down Maria Melo born 1902
in Vila Franca. You'll need her parents' names and then you can search
both churches there. As for Manuel born 1900 in Ribeira Quente, I need
more info. I'm related to most of Ribeira Quente. I found a Manuel born
to a man named Manuel Furtado Caetano, but I need your Manuel's birth date
or his parents' names to confirm. It's #53 on the right:

I have in my database:

Francisco Furtado Caetano, born abt 1829, in Ribeira Quente.
His parents were (Antonio Furtado Caetano X Antonia de Jesus:

I also have:
Antonio Furtado Caetano from Ribeira Quente that married Antonia de Jesus.

These are the only two FURTADO CAETANOs that I have.

I have a lot of LINHARES in my database.

Hi Sam,

I read it the same as you do: Barros for the father and Bairos for the
grandfather.

It must be a mistake; in the parents' casamento "Bairos" is written for both
groom and father.  .

[AZORES-Genealogy] Surnames on Flores: ARMAS, FRAGA, FURTADO, LIZANDRO, REIS, RODRIGUES, SERPA, SILVEIRA, VALADÃO (=Valladão)

2011-07-28 Thread Katharine
Perhaps this subject line will be clearer in seeking members who
recognize any of these names that were mentioned in various old
letters from Ponta da Fajã Grande das Flores.

In some old family letters in Portuguese dated 1913-1938 to my great-
grandmother in Northern California (a native of Ponta da Fajã Grande
das Flores) I've found the following names, which I've listed
alphabetically below, along with year(s) of letter(s); some names have
different spellings in different letters. All the letters except one
are from Ponta, and all but two have dates.

Please let me know if you recognize any of these names! Also, has
anyone ever heard of a place near Fajã Grande called "Grota Seca" (=
dry cave or grotto)?

Obrigada, Katharine.
