RE: [AZORES-Genealogy] Help with Rosais, Sao Jorge Baptism

2014-03-19 Thread pico
Hello Fawn,You didn't provide an easy link, but I can probably answer you, anyway. When a child was baptized at home, it's because the baby is deemed to be of such poor or fragile health that they better not wait. They use the word "sub-condition" and this was recently discussed in this group maybe a month ago, but I don't remember the subject title (always a good reason to have a title that indicates the real subject of the message...).Anyway, sometimes the priest doesn't mention the word padrinho or padrinhos and instead writes testamunhas/witnesses. I always take it to mean they are also the padrinhos, but could be wrong in this assumption. Maybe someone can chime in about this if they know for certain.I remember one of my ancestors was baptized at home in Sao Roque do Pico in the middle 1700s. So it surely doesn't mean these children didn't survive. They just got off to a shaky start in life.Doug da Rocha HolmesSacramento, CaliforniaPico & Terceira Genealogist916-550-1618www.dholmes.com

Hi Everyone,I'm having trouble understanding a baptism on the CCA site.  It is for Antonio, son of Joao Jacinto de Sigueira, native of Rosais & Barbara Joaquina Rosa, native of Norte Grande, born on the 25th of May 1834 & I think baptized on the 29th in the home.  I don't know what the rest says & google translate is absolutely no help on this one.  I see witnesses but no padrinhos.  Did this child die?  I checked the obitos & could not find him. Why was he baptized in the home?  The baptism is on the top left of the pg. Help!  Please. Thanks,Fawn SilvaSt. Louis, MO --

Re: [AZORES-Genealogy] Help with Rosais, Sao Jorge Baptism

2014-03-20 Thread Mary Bordi
It looks to me like the priest (Paulo Silveira Bettencourt) baptized the
child because they thought he might die. Witnesses were (my guess) Jose de
Souza Silveira Bettencourt and Joao Jose de Bettencourt.

I am interested since I have connections to Rosais and Norte Grande, plus a
DNA match (5th to remote cousin) between myself and your husband. But I
don't see an immediate connection to these people. :)

A belated thank you to those who helped me with this. My father had a

RE: [AZORES-Genealogy] Help with Rosais, Sao Jorge Baptism

2014-04-26 Thread nancy jean baptiste
Hi Rosemarie,

I know exactly what you mean with the frustration regarding good paper trails
and can't find the connection! Especially frustrating on the 2nd to 3rd cousin
ones! I see clues in the gedcoms but nothing definitivein truth I think
it's right in front of my eyes but I just don't know it due to our ancestral
habit of adopting whatever name they may fancy at the time. I never knew my
ggrandfather, Manuel Furtado Cardoso used any other name until looking at the
baptisms of his children on CCA and discovering that on one of them he used his
fathers name of Silva.which 2 of his brothers used in the states although
he never did. So many of my matches list surnames that match mineespecially
Cardoso, Silva, Gracia, Andrade, Castro and on and on..I see the Veira name
which is one of the names my brick wall grandfather, Jose Enos usedalong
with 3 other surnames he used!

My biggest regret with this DNA stuff is that I tested my own MTDNA instead of
my mothers..at the time I tested there wasn't any Family Finder and I never
thought I'd need moms..alas, now it's too late and I can see it would have
been a wealth of knowledge..it also would have proven or disproven what
I've come to suspect, that my mom and dad may have been distant cousins without
knowing it! There are so many shades of grey that would be cleared up by
thatat least I think they would. If they only had NO interisland connection
I could eliminate better...but all of mom's people were from Sao Jorge EXCEPT
her paternal grandmother who was from Pico and we think was a Gracia.so
that gives her a potential Pico connectionall of dads people were from Pico
and Santa Maria EXCEPT his paternal grandfather who was from Sao Jorge! Oh
dear...

Well, I'll never suffer from boredom since they'll always be another mystery to
search.

Also, I see you are the contact for Kenneth Silva who shows up as 4th-remote on
my Uncle John Baptiste.but not on me.yet you show up on me as 5th
-remote but not to Uncle John.

Best to you my cousin!

It looks to me like the priest (Paulo Silveira

Have you had the Family Finder test? My de Lemos family was from Rosais but I

Many/most of them came to the states. I do have Machados in this

siblings went to New Bedford.but I have little information regarding her
siblings.

Hello Nancy Jean,

Thank you for thinking of my father. He is doing some better & I will be
going home to St Louis on Friday.

Dennis Silva is my husband & Buzzie Mendonca is his mother's brother.
Dennis' mother passed away so we asked Uncle Buzzie to do a DNA test for us
and he kindly accepted.

Just wondering if you are Portuguese thru your mother & your father. If
you are Azorean on both sides of your family, like my husband is, the DNA
matches you mention might be closer for you because you are related closer
on the family side that your uncle is not related to. Am I making sense??
You might be related to my husband on both sides of his family, his
mother's side (Buzzie) and his father's side (Dennis' DNA) but the DNA
match will give you the closest one, in this case 4th remote. I think that
could explain this.

Cheri, is that right???

Rosemarie, how fun to be connected to you! You worked with my cousin,
Noreene, and you are a cousin to my husband!!

Our Silva's were also Silveira & are from Calheta & then Ribeira Seca &
then it goes to Topo. Have no Lemos in the family tree but have Silveira,
Soares Sigueira, Bettencourt Avila, Alveres Silveira & others from Rosais.
Also family from Pico & Faial & Terceira but the majority are from Sao
Jorge & Pico.

Would love to find out how we all connect!!

But I don't
see an immediate connection to these people. :)
