have married
Hi group
If anyone has access to Matriz of Vila Franca marriage records and during your
research you bump into a Mateus Caetano and Maria Teresa, married before March
1778 I would be extremely gratefull.

Marcio,

About 1775-1779. I have it written down somewhere, but I haven't unpacked
that box since my move last summer. Shirley Allegre knows. Shirley do you
remember which years are missing from Sao Pedro in Vila Franca?

When Shirley and I went to the archive, we asked to see the book. We
looked to see if any pages were loose, or the loose ones were bound in that
back after they fell out. No such luck. The probably fell out in the
1800s and were lost and then the book was rebound in the 1900s.

Shirley and I (and a couple of other list members) are stuck because our
ancestors married in Sao Pedro in the late 1770s. Argh!

Try to find out where are the documentation of the PROCLAMAS for that time
period of missing marriages. If you can find where these documents are there is
a possibility of recovering the marriages info. In Ribeira Grande the documents
of the PROCLAMAS are searchable at the Municipal Library...

I will try to ask ... No promisses though! Most of the times people from

I don't know who Marcio is looking for, but mine were a Manuel and a
Marianna. So finding their baptisms is a bit tricky with those common
names. We checked out the godparents of each of their kids, looking for
relatives and had no luck. I have no idea where the Proclamas are for the
churches in Vila Franca. If you ever find out, Eliseu, let me know!

Banns would be posted and read for about 3 weeks before the marriage.

Does anyone know if these books are available for digital copying as the
church records have been? It seems that with all of the records that are
missing from different village church records, that the Proclamas would be a
great genealogy tool. Perhaps it would be something that we could mention to
