Thanks Maria Lima for the suggestion, I will continue the hunt in both versions of his name. It was only this past week that I was able to find the name of his father Antonio. So there is hope yet! This is how I found out my GtGt Grandfathers name and as I said earlier his place of birth is listed as Azores or Western Isles, neither of which is very useful! The Obits & Marriage papers were of no use either. I can only surmise given the period in which he lived, he didn't have an easy time of it not being "english' and authorities possibly found it easier just to say 'Western Isles' on official documents. I have spent hours pouring over shipping lists and did find a Francis Joseph from Flores, who seems about the right age, travelled to Nantuckett, Nantuckett, Mass and later on was perhaps the same man sailing the Atlantic & Pacific showing up in Australia. Both the time frame and age of the individual fits at various recorded points. However there is absolutely no proof it is my Gt Grandfather at this point. Tony, I don't live in New Zealand and have never done New Zealand research. I would guess that you would have to trace him in NZ with every source you can find. Death records, marriage records, obituaries, their kids' baptisms, etc. Your local genealogy society probably has a list regarding how to trace an immigrant ancestor out of NZ. I think there may be a couple of NZ researchers on this list too. Maybe they will have ideas for you.
